Average age for getting your licence in my country is like 25 now. Public transport sucks, but the cost of living makes a car a luxury and nothing exciting is accessible enough to be worth it.

I fixed up an '87 Fiero. Honestly I always liked cars as a little kid and then just stopped for some reason. Now I feel like I've rediscovered some essential part of me that I would have been much happier if I had continued to embrace back in like, high school.

Anyway I'm gonna sell the Fiero and get either a C5 or a 350z

Cars have become a nuisance and a scam rather than a convenience. Cities are built entirely around needing some sort of vehicle to get around so that forces you to either get a car or deal with public transport. Then the planned self destruction of cars that auto jews do so you have to keep buying a new car so you can go to work.

having a car kinda goes to shit when your city has any form of semi reliable public transport, it's nice to have, but a lot of the time it's just easier to outsource moving your ass somewhere to anyone else. The times a year I've genuinely need a car have been less than 10 give or take, I can see why younger people, specially those are not making much at the first jobs don't want to bother going into debt for something they really don't need
as a long as a single cool guy in the group chat has a car, everyone has a car for when it really matters

this doesn't have anything to do with public transport being more appealing, transit in the us is still dogshit so idk what the other replies are smoking. and yeah new cars are boring as hell so kids have nothing to be excited about, but even boring used econoboxes are prohibitively expensive nowadays.

it used to be the norm that teens would get the handmedown family car when they got their license. back when Dad would buy a new car every 3-4 years. Dad would buy a new car (Car A) and hand the car he was currently driving (Car B) down to mom. then 3 years later he'd buy another new car (Car C), hand Car A down to Mom, and Mom would hand Car B down to the firstborn child.
The only time a kid would buy his own car is if he either hated the car Mom drove and wanted his own, or if his parents were so poor they couldn't afford to hand down the family grocery getter.

Because there's large portions of the US where not having a car means that it's impossible for you to do anything.
Want a job? gotta drive there
School? gotta drive there
Any activity whatsoever? gotta drive, don't you fucking date hang out in the sidewalk by your house because someone will call the police on you
And these same places where everything is scattered in an unreasonably big area also have 0 functional public transit, like other anons said, most teens usually get hand me down, but you can't get a cat without already owning a car, because getting a job without a car is impossible

Agree with points raised.

Technically, less people driving would actually improve the "hobby" of automotive, because you have less Normies and mouth breathers involved.

Similar to how when first mass production cars came out up until about the 70s, when car owners were white, middle class and up, 100+ iq, it came with a comprehensive service manual and decent tools, because the owners were likely to actually read the manual and follow the guide

Gatekeping works, guys. Demographics is destiny.

No, you're just believing the lies on inflation being far more mild than it is. From a US perspective:
In 1964 the USD was pegged to gold at $35/oz. Federal minimum wage was $1.25. Today gold is around $3300/oz.
If wages kept up with actual inflation, not the billshit CPI etc. which the ministry of truth spits out, then the minimum wage would be well over $100/hour. A millionaire today is as wealthy as someone with a bit over $10k to their name in 1964.
When they put us on fiat currency they immediately started to siphon our wealth. They still haven't stopped.

yay, I get to now have to pay 100% attention to everything I do and what everyone else is doing or I risk dying, killing someone, or getting a multi paycheck fine. my parents generation saw drinking and driving as a sport, not saying I want to do that, but thats how lenient they were back then. now, gg, there is nothing fun to do on a public road that's worth the massive fuck off fine risk, anything offroad I don't need a licensee for, and if we are talking about racing, thats a multi thousand dollar per session expense...

driving now is point a to point b, every vehicle up to around the 50,000-60,000 looks ugly a fuck or just blends in with everything else. passed that point you are in the 'if you can't buy it twice you cant afford it' type of car.

I honestly cant blame kids for not wanting to drive, driving to work, and having to actively weight the quick release of a head on with a semi or going straight and maybe in 10 years everything will pay off for you.

I get it, man. Capitalism works on a first come first serve basis. The older generation has assets they can use as investments, medical insurance from their jobs, and still get paid more.
But I'm talking about 20 years ago. I was making $11.50 in today's money stocking shelves at 16 and saved up to buy and insure a car and learned to wrench on it. I was making 12/hr in a factory at 18 in uni. Then we had the '08 market crash, the whole facility shut down in '09.
Compared to that, kids today are generally making more for those same jobs, like $14 for a high schooler stocking shelves. They make more than I did for those jobs and they can hold off on paying medical insurance 'til 26. Gas is about the same price inflation adjusted.
What I'm saying is, I don't feel that bad for zoomers when it comes to jobs.

Boomers needed a car as early as possible because the still lived in a high trust society where it made sense to go to public places and be social. They could fill up a car with gas for a few dollars, drive down to the soda shop and spend the afternoon dancing, then go to a drive-in movie for 50 cents, and fuck in the back of their land barge.

For Zoomers, there's basically no reason to drive anywhere. They're addicted to screens and can't be bothered to socialize in person. Even if they did go somewhere, the cost of gas is more than whatever money they have (and the ownership, insurance, and maintenance of a car are absolute prohibitive). And for all the expense they are rewarded with a society full of "modern architecture" that is soulless and demoralizing, and a high probability of being culturally enriched by a violent foreigner.

According to the US Census, the rural/urban split went from 78% in 1990 to 80% in 2020.
So yes, statistically only rich parents bought their kids cars in high school, but most families still had 1-2 cars that the kids could use even when the dad was at work. The same roughly holds true in 2025.

and who would you go out with anyway? zoomers never had third places, they might maybe have some friends they made in school but that is about it. there are no clubs, youth organizations or even any good work office culture for them to meet people to make driving out a worthwhile activity
of course this is also not touching upon how expensive modern cars are, and how unbelievably numbing they are to drive

However, my sister (who's a few years younger than me) & her bf (similar age) are basically incapable of driving, they're too "anxious" (inexperienced and coddled) to get past that initial hump of being scared when you drive and they have no desire to go anywhere it seems. You sound typical for a zoomer (neurotic). If you're that afraid of upcoming maintenace, budget for a pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic. They typically run <$150. I did this and was told everything that was wrong or would need maintenance within the next year. I took that information to the dealer who owned the car and negotiated free maintenance and money off on the car. You need to realize that the price they're asking is a best case scenario, they're always willing to budge somehow, someway. You might negotiate free maintenance for a year/12,000 miles. You might negotiate free tint. You might negotiate free tires. It's all up to you at the end of the day, the worst they can say is no.

Tbh, the price of new cars these days is insane. To boot, manufacturers are enshittifying their cars, make it cheaper and load it with unnecessary creature comfort bullshit that you can't opt out of just to drive up the price... on top of that, the cars are harder to repair without specialized tools or software specific to that manufacturer, modifying is harder than its ever been, and in most places, too many regulations as to what you can actually do with your car.

Pair this with a bunch of dumb ass drunk stance bros being the only living community left, the hobby died a slow, embarrassing death.

no teenager should have a new car, I think a third of my drivers ed class crashed their cars in the first month after getting our licenses. I'd already crashed a neighbor's car so I didn't get in any wrecks until I was 18 and overly confident, think I had 3 accidents that year. You can get a running shitbox for $500 right now, and double that gets you a mostly reliable shitbox. That's what teenagers should be driving.

$20k a year is insane and shows you're either deluded or a shill. we raised 3 kids on cloth diapers, each kid cost probably in the low hundreds of dollars a year at most in the early childhood stage, my car was more expensive.

I have 2 children and they're not inexpensive. Diapers are 15-30c each which adds up over the years.
They're 2 and 4 now and eat a lot of fruit which isn't cheap. Having a girl come to our house to teach them how to swim over the summer is like 1k. Dance class around 1k a year. It's probably costing me low-mid 4 figures, but not 20k, and you get 2k tax credit anyway. True about cars though. Combined MSRP of my 3 cars is 275k kek. Children are way cheaper than cars.
Anonymous No.28591694

that's all fine and good, but disposable diapers, personal swimming lessons, and dance classes are all luxuries. if you can afford them, great, but your grandparents grew up with none of those things. children are very very cheap to raise without those things.

People usually get a new car for them and leave the kids with their old car, or if that's new, they buy a like 3k old shitbox because a lot of kids have this tendency of thinking they know how to drive better than the road rules say, so they tend to obliterate their cars because they're going 150km/h on a 90km/h twisty road.
