Should I get a WRX for my new job?
Got a new job about two months ago now and I came to the conclusion that I need something with at least AWD if not proper 4x4, as I do light off-roading on a daily basis. I wanted a manual too so naturally I've been looking at used Tacomas and FJ Cruisers, however I randomly decided to look at some Subarus and there are a ton of WRXs with low miles and in good condition for less money than worse condition Tacos and FJs. Would a WRX (even an STI) be a decent choice? Does anyone have experience with their performance off road? Thanks.

Why the fuck would you pick a vehicle with 5'' of ground clearance and rubber band tires if you plan on going off road frequently?

You're probably going to have to change the suspension (forester suspension is common) and get some different wheels cuz mine is pretty stiff from factory

WRXs are exceptionally good on loose surfaces; gravel, snow, mud, etc. But for actual off-roading I'd look elsewhere. Also they're V8 thirsty.

get one, you won't regret it. make sure you get winter tires for the snow is you're in an area that sees real winter. the clutch feels like it was designed by a retard but you get used to it.

The off roading really isn't that bad. I have a 2003 Avalon and I've been ok so far, just got stuck in mud once and I think the AWD system should help me avoid that. A coworker of mine has been on the job longer than I have and he drives a salvage title Ford C-max so I figure it can't be that bad

People act weird AF of you show up in a new ride so soon on the job. It's really not a good idea.
>Fuck em though
Yeah but they're your coworkers. Don't rock the boat. I'm middle aged and I showed up in a new truck and my coworkers straight up ghosted me the entire week it was bizarre. I always try and upgrade my vehicle in between positions/ departments or I'll rent a car and say mine got hit to maintain appearances.

These guys are rich as fuck, they do not care. Many of them have 3-4 vehicles they alternate through. Had one guy pull up in his 67 Chevelle one day, then his 24v Cummins, then a saleen 302, all within the same week. Another guy showed up in his 454 swapped c10 one day too.

It's hard to describe as it can vary quite a bit. Currently I'm overseeing a crew installing fiber optic cable along the railroad in the upper Midwest. It varies from pretty rough gravel paths, to driving through farms, and things of that nature. My Avalon has done ok but it has gotten pretty beat up in the process. There are a couple guys with RAV4s and crosstreks that seem to be fine which is why I was even considering a WRX in the first place.

Get an actual 4x4 SUV or truck, not a Subaru. Subaru AWD is excellent but not for actual off-roading
Anonymous No.28578489 >>28578496

Just get a crosstrek. WRX is a fun car but I wouldn’t use it as a work vehicle (especially not an STI). Hauling shit around in a sedan gets old quick. Also used WRX/STIs are a dice roll for a reliable daily driver. And even if you get lucky with a clean, maintained example your still filling up your work vehicle with premium gas… fuck that.

WRXs aren't intended for actual offroading, they're for good roads with bad traction like snowy streets or fire roads.

If you're going to be pounding this thing regularly for work I would not rely on a subaru to do it.
For hopping over ditches and potholes on ungraded surfaces ground clearance will generally make more of a difference than anything else. Mud basically depends on lower weight and higher contact patch; in other words ground pressure. Something that can fit 30-33 inch wheels would be convenient since most 'all terrain' rubbers only come in those sizes.
Ford Mavericks are cheap, have great gas mileage, and come in AWD.
Mazda 3's or CX-30's are even cheaper and also have AWD.
As usual tyres tend to make more of a difference than anything else.
The mazda has 25-27 inch wheel sizes with 16-19 inch rims stock, which means your best option would be CrossClimate 2's in XL load size.
The maverick has 28-29 inch wheels with 17-19 inch rims, which is something of an awkward spot, but Destination A/T2's are a great tyre, and come in those sizes, which is convenient.

You just fucked yourself over when it comes to raise time because they're never gonna offer you big money ever again, you've already proven to them you won't jump ship, so now they're just gonna lowball you all the time until you do leave.
