This is a dreadful interior for an A6. No wood trim, no sumptuous leather, no easy-to-use buttons just screens and things you have to touch to get to work. Looks like any other VW interior - they really gave up completely.

I should also mention that our test cars haven’t been perfectly reliable. We tested a PHEV before this diesel and its electronically controlled right rear door wouldn’t latch closed. I had to lash it in place with a ratchet strap to stop it from flying open into passing traffic. This diesel also had an unbuckled phantom passenger on the rear seats that tripped the weight sensor and caused the dashboard to bong at me. I’m sure a software update would fix these issues, but it’s disappointing to see in such an expensive car.

feature bloat just means more things to go wrong
all the fiddly new 'safety features' that do nothing for safety that manufacturers include to meet their good goy scores with globohomo are especial offenders
the worst thing is that so many of them are filled with people who don't even care to do a good job and make things right anyways
but they're just following the lead from the top aren't they?
fish rot from the head first, and if the presently incumbent underlords have a cultured antipathy to civilization, should anyone be surprised that everyone else follows their lead?

I was a teen and testing cars with my dad years and years ago, and we were testing an A6 - and I told the salesperson that I didn't understand why you would have wood inside a car - lol - I still cringe internally at that one - but now I appreciate it.
I mean a leather dash would be fine - but there's no leather or wood - it's all bargain basement plastics and synthetics.

>should also mention that our test cars haven’t been perfectly reliable
Sounds like the Tiguan PHEV the Finnish motorists' association magazine has been trying out.
It had a surprising number of issues before it even hit 10,000 km. Drained the 12 V battery overnight multiple times. Something near the transmission cracked and leaked the coolant. On one drive, it made a loud unexplained bang and went into limp mode. Their most recent update a few weeks ago was that all the active driver aids/safeties went nuts, warning lights started blinking and the car started announcing system malfunctions with loud warning sounds every few minutes, making the rest of the trip hell. The next day everything seemed fine.
The dealer service's suggestion for some of the issues was basically watchful waiting, like it was some kind of chronically sick but currently mostly asymptomatic patient.

Sounds like pretty much everything on these new VAG platforms has had a lot of issues.
These cars aren't terrible when they work, and even their smallest vehicles tend to be more refined than a Toyota or a chink car, but I'm not quite sure if I'd want to own one.

The problems run deeper than that. Every single one of these comes with incredibly low profile tyres. The wheels are gigantic, because of the raised belt line, and the suspension is rock solid because people want it to feel β€œsporty”. The range of engines is pathetic. The seats are narrow and hard and so are the bolsters. Visibility is down with every generation. I don’t even think you can get clear glass on them anymore

All of this is because this is what the average person buying them wants. They want the smallest, harshest engine because their brains are twisted on the pursuit of MPG. They don’t care about the ride or handling. They want the car to endlessly bing and bong at them. It’s what they want so let them have it

welp, today i was a bit retarded and took a turn too soon, ended up smacking the back left wheel against the curb and scratching/gouging the alloy. had been thinking about replacing these 19s with 16s for quite a while now but I think this is as good an excuse as any to sell the set and get some cheap steelies

If the car came with 19"s then smaller diameter wheels might not clear the front brakes.
Anonymous No.28580768

i thought that too but there's actually a decent amount of clearance between the caliper and the inside of the wheel. then i found a thread where one guy with a v6 (same model as mine) fit 16s on theirs when they swapped to winter tyres with no issues.

Got myself an older car, late 70's lincoln versailles, for cheap
I expected to feel smug; scotch-drinking, jazz-listening, linen-wearingly smug, but no. Instead I was met with a feeling of... sadness?
There I sat in a car ridiculed for being a re-skin of a re-skin, for being slow, for being ugly and unreliable. What I got was a car more reliable, more comfortable, better put together, and more satisfying to drive than quite literally anything made in the past ~20 years. Even the damn warranty pamphlet has more soul than the entirety of the mainstream automotive landscape. Of course, neither the car, nor the pamphlet, will ever be made again.
This car sucks, and yet, it's glorious. It was supposed to be a not-quite-beater, cheap and something I wouldnt feel bad about driving and throwing shit in, but I think I love it

>Looks like any other VW interior
I was honestly hoping that Audi would be the one company to blend screenshit in well if it was here to stay. The A6 had a good way to make it look like it was all supposed to be there and it worked well. The one VW vehicle I really liked was the Jetta, since it had a screen, and some touch bullshit, but it had physical climate control and it was blended into the dash. This tacked-on vertical screen bullshit is just a recipe for glare. Notably, the previous digital dash clusters they had were matte and had a hood over them. I don't know what Audi is doing, but the S6 I'm working on buying is going to be the last Audi I buy for a while.

The name of the game is to appear you're sustainable so you can no longer use real wood veneer or real leather - only oil derived synthetic fabrics and totally-not-vinyls. The entire interior looks like low pile polyester/fleece.

Woods are an ideal interior material. High strength to weight ratios, insulates sound and temperature, damps vibrations, will not degrade from heat or sunlight, commercial species as cheap or cheaper than the cheapest plastics, good looking aesthetics that satisfy and elevate the spirit.

That previous-gen VW infotainment thing blended into the dash was actually pretty decent. Way ahead of anything you could find in a Toyota or something.
Besides Golfs and Jettas, I think they also used that in some Skoda and SEAT cars. Audi often has slightly more custom parts.

This is what the current Golf looks like, after the mid-gen upgrade that upgraded the steering wheel by going back to its Golf 7 design. Still looks like a Chinese plastic city car..
The older style wheel is definitely an upgrade from the glossy touch button shit that they used for a while, but it does look a bit out of place.

It's not surprising that young rich people don't have the same tastes as rich p people 30 years ago. Have you seen a modern luxury home? They look nothing like luxury homes in the past. No one wants to live in a house or drive a car that looks like the same one their lame parents had 30 years ago. They love simple, black and white, shiny, flat, right angles. They don't want plush leather and wood and an analog clock.

Not even in a "ooga booga screen bad" way but imagine the meeting where the first guy to present the idea was like "guys we need to give the passengers something to do when they're riding. How about a screen where they can watch the GPS map or maybe they can watch youtube" "Cant they just use their phones to distract them if they're bored" "LMAO dude you can't watch videos on a phone those are for making phone calls!"

Chances are pretty good the map's just a placeholder; The real goal is to sell apps and software services.
Every hardware company dreams of doing that since R&D costs of stupid apps are relatively low (just hire more jeets) and the service costs little to provide once developed (especially in the minds of stupid MBAs who don't understand software development life cycles).
