I'm considering getting a pair of 9000XLs for my subaru because any flowmaster bigger than a super 10 won't fit behind the axles
I figure it can't drone worse than no mufflers

If you have plenty of exhaust length, and two mufflers; the Spintechs are fine.
Also research "quarter wave resonator"

Mine is a dual 3in round in, and dual 3in Oval out.
The 2in and outs hurts the mufflers ability to dampen sound.
Sounds fucking amazing at WOT though.

-Spintech 6000s on my cammed 5.3 and 6.0 LS engines.
-5.3 is full retard loud with longtubes, but a clean full retard.
-6.0 LS had a 14" straight thru magnaflow before, sounded ok performed better than the spintech but was way too loud and droney. The spintech sounds 10x better imo at the loss of a few HP.
-DC sports straight thru on my k20, Megan catback with Megan resonator. Sounds great, no rasp deep tone.
-Borla straight thru s-curve on the ol 5.7 SBC. Actually quite quiet with the stock manifolds and cam. Internal S curve thru the muffler body seems to absorb a lot of sound.
-Flowmaster (chokemaster) 40 on the stock 305 SBC. Sounds great.

I've got one like this on my van - straight through absorption type with a chamber in the middle, except the barrel is like twice the size of this one, and it's the absolute GOAT.
Basically no loss to flow and it quietens the exhaust down HEAPS.

I want to get another one for my other car but I can't find one anywhere because it was from a stock VW Amarok exhaust I bought off Marketplace, so I think I might try to make one myself.

I prefer straight through (perforated pipe and packing) because it has the cleanest sound. Stuff like pic related always sounds like raspy trash. Chambered sounds a little better than pic related but still doesn't give as little rasp and buzz, but sometimes it's necessary to keep the exhaust from being obnoxiously loud.

Those flimsy little metal swirls aren’t going to do much to reduce sound energy and they’re going to rob a lot of power.

Large, straight through silencers with good quality packing (Acoustafil or similar) are the best performers all round. They need to be placed in the exhaust where a high pressure node exists to have the most effect. Most people just stick them wherever.

On my RX7 I used a "turbo" style muffler though, because wankels with <3 rotors sound fucking terrible and are obnoxiously loud, so I needed as much quiet as I could get out of the muffler.
