The sheetz guys are 90% stick up the ass kinda guys, not big talkers so most of what I can tell ya is observation and secondhand.
They all leave their lot at roughly the same time, we call this "the red wave" and can take upwards of 2 hours to clear. Their trucks are clean and have quite a lot of electronics and screens in em however this is a detriment to some of their drivers as the "mirroreye" system is reported to fail in severe weather (obvious problem). They do make the publicly posted $41.25/h but due to how many of them there are overtime is very limited and (likely the cause of the tight lips) are rushed around and micromanaged and usually laugh or at least give a relatable sigh when I say "all dispatch go to hell" so that tells me they aren't safe from the supply nonsense game the office folk play.
Other than that they're just another group of fuel haulers and if I see one of their very lit up trucks on the road I'll flash my lights at em and sometimes they do it back

I get why they install them if they're hiring a bunch of idiots or illegals but too often they're huge faggots about what they flag. Lowboy trailers and carhaulers are notorious for getting high centered on railroad tracks and getting hit by trains so yes the low clearance can be a huge problem if you don't trip plan carefully. You can raise them a bit on some models but not by a lot.

Do you guys have any advice for eye health or other lesser known tips for maintaining one's body despite being stuck to drive long distances?

I'm not sure trucker but I sure as shit drive like one due to the nature of my work and it can get difficult to keep my eyes workin right. My right hip kinda hurts too from working the gas pedal for extended periods of time and traffic.

Wear good sunglasses and stop to take regular breaks every 3-4 hours to stretch. I'm lucky because in a semi there's enough room to move around in the seat where I can stretch a bit while driving to help alleviate pain and muscle tightness. That's probably not possible in your vehicle so you'll just need to stop regularly to take care of yourself. I've driven for 7 hours straight before but I normally stop every 3-5 hours to go take a piss and stretch and walk around for a few minutes before getting back after it.

You won't pass a hair test if you've smoked weed regularly at any point in the last year unless you cut all your hair off after you start passing a piss test and then wait a month or two for it to grow out long enough for them to use it in a hair test. There are companies that only do piss tests since that's all DOT requires but the good ones hair test. You can treat your hair so you can still pass but it's wildly expensive and they may just take it from somewhere else instead.

Do six months with swift and then start looking around for smaller companies that will pay you way better. You may have to do a full year to get on with a good company that'll actually pay you a decent amount of money (1500-2k a week after taxes) but it is definitely possible, especially if you're cool with hauling reefer. I am now pushing 5 months into solo driving and while it may not be much of an achievement, I’m just proud of how I’m improving on my backing.
I’ve been focusing on using spatial awareness to determine where my trailer is in relation to the space I want to back into, whenever the spot is on my blind side and I’m wanting to do sight-side backing (basically making U-turns in drop yards), or even straight-back if I have the space for it. It’s a work in progress but I’m getting better at when to start turning around. Once I’ve gotten better at doing that, I may start working on blind-side backing.

I'm here. First half of this year was absolutely brutal on expenses, rates were so far in the toilet and I had repairs come up. Any O/O would have been on their ass with what I dealt with. Then I had Love's fuck up a starter install that cost me a ton of money and 15k in lost revenue, like, starters are fucking easy, but I guess it's hard to get good help these days. So that set me back a bunch with the tow and hotel expenses AND they still jewed me on the cost they charged me the full 1850 for the service call even after fucking it up, the dealer would have been cheaper.

Rates are picking up though. I was still able to do Speedweek this year fairly comfortably so it ain't all bad it's just very difficult this year. Hopefully with all the browns in trucking being deported and scared away from the industry things will improve. Fuel and maintenance and insurance is 2$ a mile for an O/O so that means they're making 25-75cpm hauling those loads. Now, in reality, are they making more than that? Yes. IF nothing breaks down and they're getting a good deal on fuel and getting good mpg and they don't have an accident and they make good mileage every single day and they're not getting tickets or getting put out of service they're likely making 50-100cpm which is liveable. If they're paying themselves more than that they're a fucking idiot because they're one blown tranny or steer tire away from being in huge debt and completely fucked.

That's the really hard part of being an O/O, having to set aside most of what you make and not treating it like income. When you start doing that and acting nigger rich you're going to get fucked, hard. You have to have insane financial discipline until you have a ton of money saved up for operating expenses at which point you can start making real money until something inevitably breaks and you have to start saving again to get back to baseline.

Being a company driver really isn't that bad a deal even if you won't be able to make as much money as if you were an O/O because your money will be a lot more consistent and you won't be dealing with nearly as much stress and bullshit. If you want to be an O/O, be a company driver for long enough to save up twice what you'd need to make a down payment on a brand new truck (minimum, if not 3-4x preferably) and set up a financing deal through your bank after making sure your credit score is good to great before doing it. I'm white, so I was smart enough to get a bucket meant for paint with a lid that makes a tight seal. There's no way in hell I could drive around with it open, it would get fucking everywhere and the smell would be terrible. I keep a bottle of extra strength febreeze to spray after using it once it's sealed back up. I also bleach wipe the exterior and wash it out each time I dump it.

i dont know what model/brand the electric apu in my pete is, but it blows through the AC vents in the sleeper. the problem, was it was not powerful enough to cool the entire sleeper. I draped some blankets from the top bunk to make a shroud so it only has to cool the space immediately above the bed and it works great. too good even, sleeping under multiple blankets in mid-summer.

Mine always arranges multiple events but barely any of the drivers get to go because they schedule in the middle of the work week and you have to burn your PTO to attend, and I'm not wasting mine to sit around with a bunch of people I don't know. This seems to be a common sentiment and management always quietly brushes over the low attendance.

Today they're grilling burgers & dogs at our maintenance garage, from 1100-1300. I'm in houston texas, about 6-7 hours away. I'm not getting any, and I wasn't wasting a fucking personal day to get a free burger. They also did golfing at a local course, (bring or rent your own clubs) (I don't own any clubs and I'm not renting them to try and not wasting a personal day to find out if I like golf) and playing pool and doing drink vouchers at a local bar (not providing DD services figure it out yourself)

our location has about 140 drivers and usually maybe 10 show up, if they happened to already have that day off. Pretty sure they do this shit on purpose to keep their appreciation stuff low budget. They did hand out freebies to everyone though, a pretty nice canvas zip up tote, and an insulated thermos with their logo on it.

I may live like an animal as a consequence of this job and my IBS but I do keep my enclosure as clean as possible on the inside. The outside of my truck is fucking filthy and that's not going to change until my company either pays for it to get washed without me having to submit it for reimbursement and wait two weeks to get it back, or I start making enough money to afford to wait two weeks to get my 120$ back.
