I'm going to do a road trip in northern Italy next month. The plan includes driving to Bellagio and Lake Como, then to Portofino, Riomaggiore, Pisa, Chianti, and drop off the car in Florence.

My options are:
>Peugeot 208 (non-hybrid petrol)
>Citroën DS 4
>Audi A4 Avant
>BMW 330i

There is a difference of 308 euros between the Pug and the Bimmer, with the others being in between the two. Which of these is the most bang for buck?

are you there to hoon? if not then take the pug. is there any diesel options? if so then i would consider that, you might save the extra cost at the fuel pump and they are just more comfy to drive.

Of course I'm there to hoon. I wish I could do a Stelvio Pass run but there won't be enough time to drive there from Milan and drive back.
I hear the backroads along the Ligurian coast are especially fun.

these passes are all full of bikers (not the motorized ones) busses and tourists in camper vans, there is no hooning there.

Out of those 4, definitely the 330i. It's RWD and at least reasonably quick. The Peugeot and Citroen are commuter shitboxes, while the audi is comfortable but boring to drive.

I went on a similar trip a couple of years back and both the area around lake Como and the area between Portofino and Riomaggiore have some great backroads. Just be aware that near Cinque Terre the roads can be quite narrow while the drop down is steep. So, if you have any passengers they might get a bit terrified if you drive fast. Also FYI, in case you are planning to visit Portofino or Cinque Terre itself: parking a car anywhere near the Cinque Terre villages is a nightmare (they're tourist traps) so if you want to visit it's better to take the train, this can save you (literally) a few hours of walking up and down the hills near each village. Portofino is not as bad, but it's still hard to reach and IIRC has only one public car park, so it's easier to park in the nearby village and take a cab or the bus.

Congrats, I did a similar trip in a rental BMW, and it was wonderful. Out of these four BMW without a doubt. Try to take smaller roads instead of highways where possible.
>not visiting the Italian motor valley
Shame.

It's not hooning if you are driving not faster than the locals. But the roads imply a hooning-oriented car.

I'm travelling with my special lady friend, and she is mostly used to my hooning. I think she'll love it.

Yeah that's what I feared. We might get only one hour at Portofino because we'll leave Milan at 9:30 and we have to check into our pitstop hotel in La Spezia by 8 PM. Hopefully there's a spot in that garage.
Next morning we'll take a train from La Spezia and go get our instagram shots, then go back and resume driving to Tuscany.

I'll get the bimmer

Honestly I think the whole Italy leg of our Switzerland + Italy trip is rushed but the gf wanted to visit Cinque Terre and Tuscany so I had to give up Modena. I haven't visited Venice yet, so I have a reason to go back next year.

Europe sounds gay as fuck. And they wonder why us Americans just buy a RV and explore North America instead of travelling abroad.

Sad. Don't remember much from Cinque Terre, I believe the whole area is accessible by train (helps with that parking situation another anon mentioned), is infested by tourists and there is not much to do there, if you don't plan on hiking away from the built-up areas of course.
I recommend starting to plan a second trip. Modena should take at least a couple of days, it's a nice town with lots to see besides automotive-related attractions, I really liked it, and Bologna with even more normie stuff is right next to it. Don't go there in the middle of the summer though, too much sun during the day in the valley.

You'd be surprised how tight that spot might be. They play fucking Sokoban with cars in these coastal cities. However, they most probably won't allow you to park there yourself, there is mandatory valet parking in such places, so be aware.

locals will be hooning in fiats, just saying...
i get your point, but you wont be doing burbouts so rwd/fwd is irrelevant. it seems they are all gas so you will be shifting like crazy at mountain passes unless you get an auto. do you realize how quick shifting get boring when doing so? halfway up one of these you will beg for mercy and try to stick with one gear but you cant... with a torqy diesel you remove maybe 2 shifts for each turn and with and auto you remove them completely. more driving, less chores.
also, its italy, its best enjoyed in a weird shitbox, funny they dont offer an italian option. driving a bmw is like going there and order american style pizza.

Citroen are comfortable cars and drive well for the type of route you'll be taking. My tip for the lake Como area is parking which might be an issue because of narrow roads and being crowded. Have an amazing trip anon.

i kinda felt relief when a shifter cable snapped on my transit last week, i had to crawl under it and engage 4th then i took of and drove in that gear the entire way home. most comfy drive i had in years.
