Restoring irreplaceable tire
I recently bought a 1980 lincoln versailles as a daily driver and found out about the collapsable spare tire. Thing is, these things haven't been made in 50 years. The modern collapsable spares are huge and don't have the right bolt pattern either. I don't want to carry around a full size spare as it will eat ~50% of my trunk space. Yes I plan on carrying a plug kit. No a donut spare will not fit where this fits.
>With all that said, I have to stick with this thing.
So, what can I do to ensure it doesn't kaboom when I try and inflate it? The rubber is somewhat pliable and theres no visible cracking but its bent all to hell.

Put a 12 inch sub in the thing and use the whole trunk space

you really should just carry a full-size spare

The fuck you do, you're just being autistic. That thing wouldn't last a mile under use at it's age. The original spare tire in my crown vic exploded after a single use, only it waited until after I removed it and placed it in the trunk. The explosion took out the back window.

Kek'd out loud
Anyways I'm going to soak it in wintergreen oil (plasticizer) and mineral spirits
If thred bumping ceases before inflation pics are posted, just assume I died in a tire explosion

You'd have better luck with heat.

You know, I’ve looked into getting one of those Weld Racing forged 4 inch wide wheels as a spare. $250+ for one but then you can mount a new tire wether normal size or spare size on it. And it’ll weigh less than the original steel spare wheel.

I’m not going to try using my 70s era car’s goofy collapsable spare wheel/tire combo cuz its 45+ years old. But, I have actual full size wheels/tires that I can throw in the trunk if I may need them.

Just ordered some instant vulcanization patches from the 50's, they seem to work really well.

There's a reason they stopped making them.
If you REALLY want to get something to fit, find some beaner tire shop and get them to stretch a new tire on it like the chollos do.

New german cars have them. Of course, they're nigga inches in diameter and have a different bolt pattern but they exist

if you really think about, all tires are temporary

I've had the same question, my turd gen Camaro uses one of those too and there is absolutely not room to put a different kind of spare in its place.

I think i agree, you could just buy a new one. Another option is to buy the same thread pattern but significantly smaller in width, and fit something else on it.

do people really encounter flat tires this often that you regularly need a spare?

a blowout flat would be a day ruin-er anyway, so why not just call a flat-tow and get a new tire the one time it happens?

i dunno, I guess some of you just have bad luck so I guess it's pretty important
maybe look at ez spare wheels?

Dude what?
Its a 5x4.5" bolt pattern.
Literally still an industry standard.
Even the japanese are still using it (114.3mm)

The new german ones are 112mm and, again, are fuckin huge (14in vs 20in+) and wouldn't fit in the picrel quarter panel that this fits into
