Currently have a buddy who wants to own a classic project car. He reminds me of what I wanted to do (and never did) at his age, so I help him get this car into a roadworthy state. He got it from a rolling chassis, drivetrain in, and is now working on the wiring harness. The kid has done more in two months than most boomer hoarders ever did in forty years.

If someone asks me to do something for them then I refuse.
If someone asks me to teach them how to do something, then I'll give them some relevant resources and send them off.
If someone tells me that they started a project and want my advice, then and ONLY then will I stick around for a bit and help them if necessary.

I get your point about not indulging someone's ignorance, but if they're clearly willing to learn then I find it's often worth it to help them out in some capacity. Unless they're genuinely stupid.

Depends on the problem. Most of my friends drive newer cars, and I don't have an OBD reader, so any CEL related issues are usually a moot point for me, but If it's something that's otherwise diagnosable, then yeah, I'll generally help.

I help my family out with car stuff and i'm their tech support too. In return they help me out with various things, even though i would never ask my parents to help me because I'm grateful enough about them helping me pay for college. I dont see what the big deal is so long as your family isnt full of ungrateful cunts. Family should stick together.
