Should I buy a sound system for my vehicle? I drive a truck and listen to rap music quite often and would like a little extra bump, but don't know if it's worth spending $1,000. Honestly I don't know how much a system costs but that's my budget. And how will it affect my battery life?

does one really need to go above stock for nigbop?

I don't know. Stock is fine but sometimes I a song I really like plays and I just want to bang the shit out of it. I don't know if that warrants spending a lot of money on expensive electronic sound equipment, but it would make me feel good and how can you put a price on happiness?

What's the vehicle? If it's anything modern you aren't getting a fully oem integrated system that bumps for $1k. Meaning you won't get anything that integrates into the factory head unit. You can get really nice budget orientated sub drivers for cheap. A $150 Dayton audio 10'' sub will outperform the sub in any factory system in any production vehicle. You can get affordable mid and highs. Amps are expensive and will eat into at around half that budget. Then there's the electrical. Old vehicles won't give a fuck if you're pulling the voltage down to 10 volts. A modern vehicle will. Those current surges are hard on the alternator and starting batteries won't last long if you're routinely deep cycle discharging them. At the minimum you should do a big 3 upgrade.

It's an old vehicle. 2008 GMC Sierra
I usually sit around 12-14 volts just doing my normal thing
Don't know what a big 3 is but I'm guessing that means pork, beef, and chicken

for me, I usually use Battery by Amon Tobin as a reference for checking how well a set of speakers can deliver a full range soundstage, top to bottom

Try switching your cones first and if it sounds thin, buy an amp. Shouldn't cost more than 600 to diy with the amp and some dynamat thrown in. Adding a sub could put you closer to 1k.

All you need is a 12" sub and an amp. Yes, it's 100% worth it. Don't bother with upgrading anything else unless you just really want to. The sub makes the biggest difference by far and it's not even close.

Btw a lot of places make specific enclosures for different cars so they fit. Pic related for Sierra. This is particularly useful for trucks because they don't have a trunk.

Sounds like a solid plan. How much should I spend on an amp and 1 sub?

Sub, enclosure, amp like ~$500. Is your truck extended or crew cab?

That makes it easier. This is a dual 12" enclosure. With the suggested sub and amp below if you scroll down it's $611 total. You can install yourself but don't be shy about having a shop or audio guy so it for you.

Stock mids and tweeters are always fine enough. But very, very few cars come with actual bass. Though my car came with 2x 9" subs and 2x 10" subs stock with the Harman Kardon audio. 18 total speakers.

If your truck doesn't have an eq start with seeing if you can add that instead, or just use free software to both untraceably pirate all the music you like and bass-hype the shit out of the mp3s.

When I have my music cranked at a stoplight I can tell the person in front of me hates it when they'll do this small roll forward of a few feet. I've gotten a cop to do it lmao.
