Automatic transmissions should not have more than three gears.

>one of the popular ones today have 10 but two being so close in ration its programmed to only use 9

is there a legitimate reason? I've only ever known the 4 speed ones from the late 80s-90s

I don't know why
It doesn't want to shift no matter how hard you try

I have a 20+ year old 5-speed that has additional second and third gears called 2.5th and 3.5th even in factory docs lol
Used only when downshifting from 5th, the 4th is ignored.

I still don't understand how tf a 2 speed slushbox is somehow the best option for drag racing or something

I don't think they really care about efficient cruising or noise levels over there.

Power glides are similar to a hydraulic clutch.
I don't believe they have any physical gears that can break.
99% of drag guys use TH400/80E variants these days though.

they have a set of planetaries like almost every automatic

because it only has two gears, you can fit bigger gears in the same space a 3 or even 4 speed would.

How exactly is a manual going to get in the way of that croozing on the highway? You're shifting exactly as much as an automatic would.

If the variators are set to .999...: 1, does that make the ratio 1:1?
Anonymous No.28589402 >>28589692

Maybe for a race or performance application. In the real world anything less than 6 speeds sucks ass. 4 speeds either leave you doing 4k rpm down the highway or they have super tall and long gears that require too much downshifting on the highway. A 5 speed isn't much better.
Anonymous No.28589692
>>28589402
Depends on the highway speed you usually drive at and your engine. If that's 120-130 kph, you'll be fine with 4 or 5 spd at 2.5k RPM or even lower.

So a CVT?
