I actually know the answer anon, and it's gay as shit. basically stats show that the inboard you are away of the B-pillar, the higher the likelihood you survive a crash.
So they push the seats towards the center for better safety ratings but leave the steering wheel and pedals in a normal position, thus making you contort yourself to drive.

You can install an aftermarket seat and probably use modified brackets or something to fix this.
Also, consumers don't really want bigger cars, but they do want the same amount of interior space for comfort. So with all these added safety rules that means the exterior of the car keeps growing bigger while the interior space remains the same / gets slightly smaller.
