Subaru thread
The Crosstrek 2017 I just bought has a broken radiator. I've been driving it around for 2 days without any coolant. Other people probably test drove it in this condition for even longer. How is this engine not dead? I'm wrenchlet, make it make sense.

if they were really short trips there wouldn't have been enough time for it to overheat

i just got a new forester wilderness, shit's cash

You didn't have ANY dashboard warning lights on for those 2 days?

Ok, that makes sense.

Coolant level sensors have been on cars since the 90s. OP must be telling a tale

How did you come to discover there is "no coolant," OP? I can't imagine not getting a CEL for this.
And how do you know it's a busted radiator?

Crop from my mechanic's video, I'll go to the garage later and get a better pic. Can't really see how empty the reservoir is, but notice all that coolant sprayed around.
>How did you come to discover there is "no coolant," OP?
Last night I opened the lid up and saw that there was a leak underneath the coolant reservoir, which was empty.
>And how do you know it's a busted radiator?
My mechanic told me.

I see. It looks like when I had a blown radiator.
Thankfully radiators are cheap and usually super easy to replace.
But... radiators usually blow for a reason - like bad thermostat, broken fan, or bad radiator cap.

I should say that I live in South America and it's cold as hell down here right now. Maybe that's why I've been able to drive around with no issues so far. Anyway, the radiator is getting replaced tomorrow.

Subaru was is still using plastic radiators in 2017? damn

Hopefully your mechanic figured out *why* the radiator failed and fixes that, too. If it's another issue like a bad thermostat then a new radiator will blow too. It could just have been a bad radiator, that happens, but not usually from my experience.

I mean, it's a Subaru-only shop, surely they know what they're doing and what to look for.

Are they replacing it with OEM or an upgraded metal alternative? I'm in the habit of replacing parts that break with better-than-oem if it's a known weak point.

what's unusual about that? everyone uses plastic end tanks. they have been and will continue to do so for decades
Anonymous No.28588994 >>28589718
>>28588986
Not the end tank, I'm talking about the top and bottom of the radiator that's plastic and has been a known breaking issue in Subarus since the 90s. Upgrading to one that's all metal prevents the issue from happening again. Pic related

yeah, those are end tanks. Wasn't aware of the breaking thing though, never messed around with Subarus.

My 05' did that exact thing once, except I took it somewhere. They said there was less than 1/2 of the oil there should be. So I religiously checked the oil level after that, and it never did it again.

Buy new radiator and learn to put it on, add new coolant and make sure to get all the air out through your vehicles specific airbleed procedure. This is the tike to become a man
