Anonymous No.28595154
you'll try fixing it. realize why the nazis went insane, and buy something more sensible immediately after.

Haven't seen one on the road in ages.

Working on BMWs and trying to figure out the issues is miserable, driving them and looking at them is great

It'll cost you a fortune to fix
And people online will flame you constantly while it is in it's clapped out state

Buy a BMW shitbox but only if it's old, has an inline 6 and cheap. They're easy as all fuck to work on. Just toss out anything unnecessary as it breaks and continue driving it into the dirt.

Depends how old it is, anything from the 90s or newer and you could get the same experience from nicer and cheaper to maintain cars
Anonymous No.28596458
Because you could and should buy a V6 or V8 Passat instead

Streets here in south germany are still littered E46s and other old BMWs
Actually pretty cheap to run and surprisingly decent on fuel

I had an e28 when I was poor. bought it for 2300 off craigslist or fb marketplace. undesirable spec 528e auto. slow. in 2.5 years as my only car I only had to replace the AC blower motor. the car was dead reliable even when the hpfp got weak and it took a long time to cold start, it always started. never left me stranded once. I kept it for 8 years.

I'd pay $1000 maximum for a bmw, beat the fuck out of it all around town, then have the junkyard come scoop it up and give me $300 for it.

>>28595148 (OP) I got an unclapped one of these in June last year and have already had to:
- replace fuel pump (car died in garage)
- replace front suspension bushings
- replace brake rotors and pads
- fix leaky sump
- repair electronic headrests
- repair seat twist
- replace entire cooling system (radiator, thermostat, clutch fan etc) when plastic radiator exploded and left me on side of mountain
- Cabin filter
- Do paint correction
- Spark plugs

Car is now weeping from rocker cover and I will have to do that this weekend.

They are pretty robust but the are 30+ years old now. Mine is an M50 and is fundamentally reliable but auxiliary stuff fails. The V8s can be more problematic. These were luxury cars and should be treated as such from a maintenance standpoint. The difference is you can work on them yourself unlike new cars.

depends what you like about cars/driving
I love the analogue feeling, driving on backroads, enjoying the detachment from anything else. I love working on it, as the other anons mention, it's quite easy to do it. I don't give a fuck about new cars, and i hate people chasing status
