I'm weirdly excited for this thing even though it's gonna be CRZ v2 at best, and apparently it's getting a formal launch in Japan today. Where can I find info, and more importantly, am I stupid to care?

Honda hybrids are direct drive electric vehicles. Despite the "eCVT" label, there is NO transmission in a honda hybrid. No planetary gear shenanigans like Toyota, Honda is just straight up electric motor directly driving the front wheels.
The purpose of the ICE is just to generate electricity. So 99% of the time you're only using electric motor 180hp.
The charge state of the battery doesn't matter at all and is just there to create efficiency by storing excess energy.

If you're going up a sustained incline and drain the battery, the ICE will start revving up to keep the electric motor juiced up. Horsepower of the engine is irrelevant. It's all electric motor. So yes, 200hp is a lie that can only be obtained when driving at 100 MPH, but it also will never drop to 100hp.

>If you're going up a sustained incline and drain the battery, the ICE will start revving up to keep the electric motor juiced up.
The ICE only has 140hp MAX.
If it has to split that 140hp between generating electricity to the motors and to the battery then there's even less overall hp sent to the motors.
You can't beat thermodynamics.

Anonymous No.28610694 [Report] >>28610704

the ICE is primarily an electric generator. the ICE and generator are directly and permanently linked. when the engine runs the generator runs. there's no if this or that. the only difference is the computer can decide to use the generated electricity to charge the battery, or disconnect the battery entirely and pump 100% to the electric motor, or somewhere in between as needed.

as I said, the battery is there to store excess energy such as regenerative braking or ICE generation during non-peak motor use.
It functions like a capacitor, you don't want the engine start-stop every single time the electric motor moves.

i think i read something about manufacturers making hybrid trims of certain cars because emission regulations would consider the average of the entire platform or something.

couldn't they make an automatic hybrid trim for american normalfags that just want a convertible? it would help with keeping it profitable too.
mazda sort of does this with the automatic miata which accounts for 1/3 of sales in the US. no hybrid yet but i'm pretty sure that's coming with the next gen considering the patents they registered in the past year.

is this a viable path for the S2000? i don't know that much about the auto regulations and maybe i misunderstood or hallucinated an article .

Convertibles are of their time. You'll have to wait decades before they become popular again, and you'll probably need to expel a few demographic populations since people won't put the top down if they don't feel safe in the open.
