Fastest i've gone is 126mph in a 2010 Cadillac CTS, driving my wife, 1 year old daughter and a trunk full of luggage through Wisconsin. After hitting that speed, and thinking I wasnt as well planted on the road as I thought was safe, I let off the gas and let a hill brake my as I went up. As soon as I crested it I ran in to a state trooper in a speed trap. Cost me ~$600 later and a 2 week license suspension after he said I was going 110mph in a 70mph zone. I've topped out every vehicle I've owned, except this VW MK4 Jetta with the ALH.

I have no desire to top this car out. It's slow, but the fuel economy is incredible.
>Did a road trip from northern Michigan down to Ohio/WV and back on a single tank
>Put in 16 some odd gallons with 980 miles clocked
>Still had ~1 gallon left

If I drive for fuel economy I can average 55+. If I drive with traffic I see low 50's. Anything past 80 and the fuel economy is high 40's.

Maybe someday I'll top it out, but not yet.

No it doesn't. It depends on where the OEM decided to stop the graphics.
And I doubt your speedo doesn't read about 1% over if it's very good, as it's illegal (in EU) to sell a car where the speedo under-reads, so all OEMs deliberately make their speedos optimistic, particularly to allow for tyre wear, etc.

OK -it should be accurate without the OEM offset, but
> How accurate is GPS for speed measurement?
>As with positioning, the speed accuracy of GPS depends on many factors.
>The government provides the GPS signal in space with a global average user range rate error (URRE) of ≤0.006 m/sec over any 3-second interval, with 95% probability.

Not in a long time. Any speed over 100mph/50mph over the limit is jail time and car impounding (where your car will get fucked up by tow lot scumfucks) and there is too much traffic now to try it unless I were to go out in the wee hours of the morning because the population has exploded since 2020. Donno if its a thing specific to euroboxes where the top of the spedometer is nowhere near the actual top speed of the car.
I know that we never had the retarded 55 or 85 laws, and germany has the autobahn, but still most top speeds only reach up to about 1/3 of the spedometer
You'd think it would be useful to keep the spedometer a bit shorter, make the first 100kph a bit more readable

For the 1 or two times you *might* do it, I'd say it's worth it.

actual topping out?
Nope
close to?
yes
my first car was a 03 punto 1,2. Top speed 160. one day while going home i reached 150. It was also a 90 road.
God it was scary since the lil fiat was narrow, short and had soft suspension.
My current car is an 318d. top speed is roughly 200 but i did reach 160 when going home from work.
My friend also has 318d and with his i reached 180/190 on autobahn like it was nothing.

I hit 180 going downhill in a Europcar Punto back in '99. That was one of the bigger 4-door ones.
Also had a 2 door rental and had that at 160.

Hmm, I don't think I took a single picture when I was in Sicily for 2 years.

Caymans don't have 5 pods, but that probably isn't obvious with the aspect ratio setting on my action cam. That's a 3.8L at about 5,300ft above sea level.

In practice, the fastest cars on the road are rental cars and white vans. That's just how it is. No one cares about a rental and tradies have places to be and zero fucks to give.

>Let me tell you, it's scary as shit.
I'd believe it. Suspension is completely overwhelmed on economy cars and the pizza cutter tires don't help either. The car feels like it's going to float off the road whether you like it or not.

all my first cars.
opel 1,6, would cruise at 160kmh all day and didnt take much time to get there, topped out at 180
ford sierra 2,0, cruised at 180, topped out at 220
vw transporter van, topped out at 180, cruised at 160 while towing a suzuki samurai on a trailer
dads '75 toyota wagon, 130
grandpas ford escort, 170
ford e series van 7,3 diesel 140
then i started to chicken out a bit/growing up/buying cars where the top speed was just to high for the roads here. alfa romeo and volvo 850 i never went above 180, their potential was probably in the 250 range. some of my later vans & 4x4s have been purely utilitarian and would shake themselfs apart if driven above 130-140 despite having the grunt to go faster.

did like 180 on speedometer
>first car starlet
it did like 168 maybe but the engine was really slow idk sold it quickly
>some 2018 mercedes sprinter
was limited at 165kph without limiter you could do 200kph for sure in that van engine and box make for great driveline in a van like that (it was like 7 speed dtc i think
>mx5 NB idk the gearing and power fucking sucks in a car like this however it has very little drag or resistance so top speed was pretty good
210 kph
> audi 2016 A3 etron
was limited at 250 kinda sucked,i think you could do 280 in it pretty easy
>k20 eg
had a six speed but idk above 225 that shit gets kinda scary could do 250kph easy im sure of it.
>mercedes C220D 2013
230kph car drives like a fucking tank one of the nicest cars i drove for constant high speed traveling
>2004 yaris sport 1.5
did like 202kph got there suprisingly quick
toyota made final drive and engine match pretty good in this car.

No, gotten up to 142 mph. Max should be 180+mph.

There is a highway nearby with a 15 mile long section that is literally straight as an arrow that would be perfect for a top speed run at 2 am on a Sunday. Except faggot cops will randomly camp on it even at 2 am. And since it's completely straight they can probably tag you from miles away. Actual cockblocking bullshit.

On the flip side, they're about to take away the work van from a different service tech because anytime he has to go somewhere he refuses to use the interstate and does 45mph max in 55 zones

yup. Went feral one night and did ~130 in an automatic CM accord. Did well handling-wise, but the transmission overheated.

I knew a guy who threw back 10 beers (raging alcoholic so that is roughly ~4 for a sober man) and sped at 140 mph in a rental across 2 states to get to a party w/ his 2 buddies. Didnt get arrested. Buddies shit themselves big time and got a cab home.

I usually do this from time to time just to check if the engine's still got horsepower in it; and always after a fresh oil and filters change just to be sure that at least the lubrication is doing its job. Possibly on low tank and unloaded trunk/whatever to reach top speed a bit faster since I do not have any good straight road to just floor it to heart content.
Still does 140 mph and I feel that I have some 200/300 RPM more to squeeze but then my testing road goes uphill.
2.0 liter diesel from 2007.
