remember back in the day when people thought the WRX nameplate was the shit, and now they just get clowned on by economy spec pony cars.

Why do they make them so ugly now? FFS subaru

Yeah that was maybe like 3 years when it first came out and the pony car was only just as fast. They also had a reputation for stripping gears and exploding transmissions if you actually tried to get the magazine times

Lol this.
I could maybe think about buying one if it looked better.. a LOT better if i'm honest. this thing looks pathetic.
but good lord, subaru (and toyota, and honda, and nigsan) have REALLY lost their way.

Uh, dude, the cheapest new cars on the market are like $20k. It's 2025. Were you in a coma?

hp is simply too low, especially because AWD drivetrain losses means its real horsepower is even lower

Early to mid 10's was peak subaru, the last impreza wrx's, a car that was almost the same as the top spec sti for a lot less. Well the sti was never as good as an evo, but at that time the wrx gave you more speed than anything else going for 25k - and a fair few things for more too.
I'm not sure where I was going with this, but I guess the takeaway is that it's a shame most cars have gotten worse, and to ford's credit that they've improved the mustang.

I got this 2020 premium new for 27k
After 3 years of ownership I sold it for 28k.

I known inflation and shit but fuck dude, an over $10,000 price increase for an equivalent trim? This year has the tariff excuse but last year didn't and a premium started at 36k. I wouldn't be surprised to see it start at 40k for 2026.

Pretty sure it's inflation plus greed. The manufacturers know it will sell even at increased prices. I bought a car 2024 MSRP was 131k. Now the 2025 car's MSRP is 148k plus I can sell my car for more than I paid for it

Bottom tier shitboxen are now $20K (were 10K)
"Affordable" spurty cars are now $40K (were 20K)

It's easy, just 2x every price you were used to. Same thing even happened to the chocolates I buy at the store

It's an on paper nice car that non-car people like. Especially programmers who has disposable income but no personality.

Inflation isn't the issue. The issue is you can spend just as much on a much faster and more fun to drive Mustang or lightly used Camaro. You can spend another $20k and get a mid engined supercar with a V8. Meanwhile you're paying $45k for 220hp and 3600lbs.

because it has a niche (awd manual sedan) and its a fully loaded model, the base is closer to $35k

the next cheapest awd sports sedan is $50k starting (audi s3/bmw m240xi/golf r). nothing comes manual.

its closer to 250-260whp/3400lbs which is why its as fast as a last gen wrx sti, it was intentionally gimped so you have to buy a gr corolla for real lsds

the average buyer for wrxs in japan is 50+ (usually with CVTs, the same demographic who bought chasers/jzx cars 20 years ago)

in north america the target demographic is millenials with kids who owned wrxs 10-20 years ago. theyre as big as a 2000s midsized car inside (accord/legacy/camry) and easily fit 2 car seats for toddlers. trunk is huge too. new legacy is the size of a 1990s panther car
