Motor Oil shelf life
Hello /o/,
So I bought two cans of motor oil for my car (5W-30 Fully sinth) in a good deal, factory new unopened and whatnot. But date of manufacture is Jan 2024 and I've just made my oil change so for another year or so I'm good. So question is, what is the shelf life of motor oils? Google AI answers that synth oils are good for 7/8 years in the best storing conditions, but what's your opinion on this? Thanks

>oil is in the ground for millions of years
>dig it up and put it in a bottle
>now it can expire
It's good forever

>he thinks synthetic oils come out of the ground
TRUE synthetic oils are created in a lab without using petroleum. And even if the oil can't expire the additives can.

I'm still using oils that I bought back in 2021. Still 1 unopened jug left.
Whatever.

One of the benefits of synthetic oils is that they don't degrade as much in engine conditions like traditional motor oil does. If the oil can withstand the heat, pressure, and contamination of being run through an engine for thousands of miles it's fine to sit on a shelf. Maybe, MAYBE, some part of the oil or additives would break down from oxidation or UV exposure or contamination with humidity eventually but in a sealed bottle on the shelf all of that is so slow that the stuff will outlast you. The bottle would fall apart first.

Just email the company and ask them rather than killing your car listening to /o/

bruh it's literally millions of years old.

5 years, then the additives become less effective.
if you have old oil, you can still use it, just change it earlier, like 5000km.
