Meanwhile you can drive over the Tesla dealership and just get in a line for the Model 3 Performance Highlander, and get it in 1-6 weeks, for a reasonable premium of some % over their 4DW version.

I think you're not aware of how much the imbalance between the rich and the poor is compared to 30 years ago.
There are a lot more people who can afford out of reach for the common people cars than before.

Remember, there are currently two kinds of car buyer- one that buys a car for 16k and one who buys a car for 160k. There is no inbetween, and this would never cost 16k no matter how stripped down because Renault's base offerings barely fit into the 16k margin already.
