Yea, life is so competitive now that a vehicle like this is seen as a ticket to making mortgage/rent/health insurance/investment payments vs buying something like a used BMW, going broke and ending up homeless.

What kind of dream world are you living in? $500-100 cars were always "mechanics specials" and you had to know how to wrench on them. Trust me. All I've ever owned is $500 shitboxes. You have always had to spend at least $5k (in todays money) to get something usable as a daily driver for somebody who can't wrench or can't afford to take it to the mechanic every month. I also don't know why you think $500-1000 cars don't exist. Go to your local auctions and look for cars there. You can get cars that need some work but still run and drive for $1k or less OTD. You could also get off your ass and look at cars in the real world. Notice a car that hasn't moved in 10 years? Respectfully ask the owner or leave a note explaining how you would like to take it off their hands. Also not every car for sale is listed on the internet. Plenty of old people still use this thing called a "for sale sign".

This, imagine being a normie and seeing people with like 2006 Civics having an easier ownership experience than someone with a newer 1.5T Honda or a ford egoboost that's misfiring during cold starts at way below 100,000 miles because coolant is puddling on the pistons when the car sits overnight.

Suddenly 4,5,6 grand for that old ass car with 15-16inch wheels doesn't seem so bad, people are starting to respect and see beauty in the base model that isn't a nightmare when it seldom needs something other than routine maintenance.

Older a car gets the more the balance shifts over to repair cost.
Eventually a car is near fucking worthless even if it still runs.

Well that's how it USED to be, but now everything with a totally blown out suspension and a transmission on the edge of failure is still being priced in the multi thousands.

Most of the remaining 90s-2000s era USDM Toyotas that dealerships take as trade-ins are sent to auction and subsequently exported to Western Africa and Southeast Asia. I went to Cambodia last year and I was shocked at the amount of USDM cars on the roads.

Just because the car doesn't have a blown out tranny or engine, doesn't mean maintenance doesn't add up, suspension arms, the struts, brakes on both ends seals leaking out, the power steering blowing out of the rack or the pump, 2000s cars are some of the best there are but it can total itself three times over if you're taking it to shops, it just is what it is, that's why if you're gonna pay like 5000 dollars for a 2000s car, it better have some fucking receipts to show people looking after this old piece.

Fwiw Nigeria is the most developed and highest income sub-saharan African country. Much larger population and better economy than either South Africa or even Kenya. It's still a shithole, but they have almost 250 million people in Nigeria alone. They have a middle class, they even have billionaires who choose to live there.

It's a catch-22. I understand why people are upset at the exporting of these reliable used cars, but you're forgetting just how important automotive companies are to the economy of US, Japan, and Europe. If everyone just kept driving these used cars, then new car sales would be even lower than they already are, and the overall economy would be even worse.

This is true. Before the 1990s, any car that made it to 100k miles was pretty much considered miraculous. Most odometers didn't even go to 100k miles then, that's when they would reset.

Before the 90s it was normal to buy a brand new car and only have it for 4 or 5 years because after that it would rapidly start to deteriorate and need problems. It's why kids in the 50s and 60s could buy 10 or 15 year old used cars for less than $100

Doesn't help that every fleet buyer wants one too. 36 mpg is hard to beat for a large car.

True. I remember when the FR86 and BRZ came out. I was convinced, hey, maybe I'll buy a used one in a few years. Ten years later they were still overpriced and selling for 20k for 100k miles. In 2024 at 31 years old I just bought one brand new with no seat farts. I pulled the bags of the seats and shipping tape off the body panels myself.

depreciation is a meme post-clunkers era.

Back around 2009 I bought a 2002 SR5 V6 4X2 with ~70k miles from an old man for $3,000. For as anemic as it was I missed it so much after selling it I found another one about 4 years ago. 2002 Limited 4X4 with 160k for 10k. It was during peak covid so by comparison it wasn't as bad as it sounds.
Shit was clean inside and out, no rust and full service records from day 1. I even managed to find the previous owner and he said he sold it after nearly 10 years because he needed something newer with a crew cab.

In my time of ownership I've had to replace
Timing belt / water pump - this is normal maintenance for the 2UZ
The entire front suspension, CVs, Struts, control arms, etc
Power steering lines
Radiator and hoses
Valve cover gaskets
Both rear axles, including the brakes
Power window regulators
Full repaint - The clear coat gave out about 2 years into ownership
Headlight assemblies - Oxidized entirely
Fog light assemblies - Both oxidized and would fill with water

At this point I'm in too deep so I guess I'm keeping this truck for life. Even Toyotas have problem with age.

Minivans have always been like that because people buy them for utility not status. They don’t sell them till they’re totally clapped out and/or their kids are grown. They don’t trade it in after 3 years to get the new one.
My parents were super frugal and they always bought minivans new because there are no good used ones. Except maybe ones that were rentals.

>Before the 1990s, any car that made it to 100k miles was pretty much considered miraculous. Most odometers didn't even go to 100k miles then.
The first part’s not true, plenty of cars rolled over their odometer. The 5 figure odometer was just a psy-op by manufacturers.

There's plenty of really low mileage ones, which makes me think that people got in hot water over a new car and had to return it or sell it back at a loss.

I think the issue is that people keep importing cars that aren't that special. Now, there are cost constraints but they certainly do not make the money work for them.

This is the recession in action. People expect cars to lose value, but in reality it pushes the value of good used cars up because the lower middle class can't afford to spend more anymore.

The funny part is that their APR on a late model used car could very likely place them in a worse position than if they just bought a new car instead. Used car prices have also inflated to the point where it's a terrible deal for anything above a midsize car.

All signs are pointing towards just leaving the auto market alone for this year. Anyone that has to buy right now are about to get mugged at a dealership.
>recession
Everyone's screaming this from the rooftops, which means that it's been ongoing for a few years anyways. How long it lasts is up for question, but data indicates stagflationary economic activity, which means that any move to try to resolve it is just going to make things worse one way or the other. Question is what kind of shit sandwich are people willing to take a bite out of, because if they don't choose something, they'll be eating two for the price of four instead of only one.

>looking for running, driving cars on marketplace
>almost always $4k minimum
>bushings and mounts are always thrashed. Something usually leaking.
I really wish the market would respond more steeply to suspension problems outside of powertrain issues or crash damage. Replacing a full set of bushings is almost as expensive as a new engine in labor.

This, people get this idea in their head that a Honda or Toyota has a healthy engine and transmission and think it's worth crazy money, and you get people massively overpaying for it because they don't understand that the rest of the car needs thousands of dollars of attention with it's bushings, struts that have never been done, possible re-sealing of things being needed, motor or tranny mounts being shot and needing replaced, entire cooling system needing re-done because 20+ years old and might be leaking and definitely aged out, and who knows what the fuck else, as great as old cars are, they have old car needs, which should make it worth next to nothing because things add up like crazy, $4-5K better be a well maintained car that's got receipts for major work and needs very little if at all because maintenance is a fucking bitch.

Issue is that suspension parts look cheap, so it must be cheap, right?
