Man, I bought one of those rgb lightbulbs for a vase light and didn't realise that it was some fancy smart light that needs a phone app to "work", needs wifi and if the power ever goes out or you unplug the light, it forgets everything and you have to go through this god damn simon says game for it to even consider connecting to the phone app so you could MAYBE connect it to the internet.

I realised too late that I was a fucking retarded for buying shit like that and ripped the thing into pieces.

What's even worse that those chinese 5 buck RGB bulbs with "that" remote always work, remember the program even if they lose power and have a neat colour fade effect where they smoothly cycle through the whole colour range.
The 30 buck smart bulb didn't even have a colour cycle option.

The app is the new fob. It's the type of feature where you don't think it's special until you get a car with it. You're used to doing things the old way and it's just routine, then you try the new way and you realize how much the old way sucks. My favorite part is being able to set the climate. Nothing beats climbing into a nice cool car when it's 100° outside. And the remote access is handy occasionally too. When I got my windows tinted, instead of having to go drop the car off and either sit around waiting or getting a ride back and forth, I just went to work. He drove to my car, called me, I unlocked it, started it up, he drove it back and forth, and I clocked out with freshly tinted windows and never even had to go to his garage. And i know he didn't do anything sketchy because I can monitor the cars gps and see exactly where he went. if someone needs to get something out of or put something in your car, you can just pop the trunk from anywhere.

At least for the Ford app I can double check the locks are locked, remote start, check fuel (planning my day if I need to get gas), check tire pressures, see exactly where the vehicle is located (great if you park and have to walk a mile somewhere else) check oil levels and service intervals, see any OEM recalls, schedule service at the dealership, see the service history, find local dealers if I go on a road trip and need a repair or help with the truck, readily have my license plate and VIN number.

And yeah, most of that shit is relatively silly neurotic details 98% of people barely care about. You ever run out of the restaurant to get a thing you left in the center console and run back in wondering if you locked the doors? Ever sit there knowing you have to drive 150 miles to the jobsite tomorrow wondering if you have enough gas for the trip? Ever forget where you parked after a day in a different town parked in that one lot? Ever think about how you usually do oil changes in October wondering when the last time you changed it? The app answers all those questions. Again, silly neurotic stuff other than remote locking. They're free apps so who cares.

Read the fine print you agreed to. You might be thinking that you exchange your data (that isn't worthless, companies pay a lot to access it in bulk) for the convenience of this "free" app. But you don't have a say about the terms of this exchange, nor you can't opt out of your data being given to fuck knows who fuck knows when for fuck knows what purpose.

What data is that, and why is it important to me as the individual consumer.

I think I understand why multiple companies will pay for that data in bulk batches, but I'm still confused why its valuable to me and why I should protect it. I've asked this question on /ck/ for the food apps. Nobody can seem to answer this simple question after pointing out its valuable to someone and I shouldn't just give it away. Tell me why. I understand what you said, but tell me the -why- please.

If I could package my own data and sell it to a firm to later resell, how much do you think I could get as an individual? Do you think it'd amount to a penny?

nta but i view it like that
would you like it if there was a person behind you at all times constantly monitoring what you are doing and writing it down.
if you would have issues with that then you should be concerned with the data collection because is basically that except you dont see the person
yeah also there might be different people monitoring you at different situations(driving the car vs sitting at the pc) but at the end of the day they do come together to exchange the info

Exactly my car doesn't monitor everything I do. It only knows where I live and where I work. You know who else knows that? Literally every single person with access to any government or financial database. Maybe it knows how I drive and maybe the insurance companies pay for that data to charge more but I doubt it. Big AI models munching on data optimize for companies to give least and charge most.

Doesnt matter since China is gonna eat them for brekky soon enough, its already under way.

You have to understand that companies want to charge most for least and grow their business.

By access to your data they know how you think, how to advertise to you or population they aim, what you search for, how to win you over basically, but also undermine you.

You have to understand that best companies will overdeliver and undercharge. And new BMW aint one of those companies.

Best cars in the world have already been built and sold.

Big companies pay to know what you eat and smartwatch companies sell their data to pharma.
Your data can be identified (unique identifier) and a company can have access to data about your life more than you know - what you eat, body parameters, how you sleep, what you drive, who you date, where you live and optimize it all under your nose you never will know that you live life according to some corpo blueprint invented to milk you for money and keep you always "just another car" away from Bliss.

You have to understand what Im saying here truly. Eugenics is already happening but its so stealthy and soft - you dont even know.

Best bet is to give least data you can and be vigilant about what you let show online.

Owning your mind is first step - dont mindlessly consume "content".

Do you like being monitored and judged by fuck knows who according to fuck knows what rules? Because it's already being done with your money: credit score, insurances or even prices and "special offers" you get. Have you encountered private sale posts with no price listed, so everyone has to DM the seller to get the price? Do you fucking like it? Do you like paying more simply because someone (correctly) decided you can be milked in some specific circumstances they are aware of thanks to the data they collected and analyzed?
That's only one aspect of this shit, the stuff every normalfag is aware of, not some borderline schizo scenarios, although it basically is the social credit system but not yet full dystopian. Perfectly legal, by the way.
Some other common scenarios include "data breaches" (happens pretty regularly) some malicious actors can use to do illegal stuff easier, or law enforcement using collected data against you as evidence because it's more convenient than chasing the actual criminal and the machines don't lie (if they have the required certifications), nor they can testify.

Or in a multiple-vehicle collision you are suddenly at fault because the only car that snitched on its owner is yours, because for everyone else's they were unable to pull the logs and had to resort to the old-fashioned forensic ways with certain degree of uncertainty.

You don't understand collision reports or insurance claims adjusting, do you? How about the "black box" thats been installed in EVERY new car since about 1998 that records vehicle telemetry and other data that 999 times out of 1000 is simply turned over to the police for crash investigation and to the NHTSA?

You're coming up with all of these fantasy scenarios that have no basis in reality or are already happening before cell phones and apps were common.

This has been my biggest issue; opponents of apps like these are always coming up with some strange fantasy where an entity is writing some hyper specific detailed ledger of your entire life. You're not that important. I am not that important. You still haven't explained anything, only given fairy tales. Resistive heat elements work weather someone is sitting on them or not. My heated seat and steering wheel are toasty when I get in skipping the 30 seconds of warm up.

When I used to live in a place with frequent -20-30°C in winter and +30°C in summer I left automatic climate control at +24 and it somehow worked for me and most of the passengers too since they didn't change the settings for their zones much. Sometimes I felt the need to adjust it plus or minus one degree but only when it blew directly at me, not while being away from the vehicle, especially in another car of mine where it worked a bit worse. Do you have automatic climate control?
>Resistive heat elements work weather someone is sitting on them or not.
They can't heat up something they don't have good contact with (something your ass and your back help them with), and some materials transfer or retain heat better or worse than others. I guess it might depend on the particular seat.

Please enlighten me, genius. I replaced both the cushion and the cover on one of my seats, so I have a rough idea how thick the leather could be and that the contact between it and the heating element is not guaranteed (since sometimes it's velcroed to the cushion not to the cover).

Yes, people in climates like san diego a rarely need heated seats, but don't have 30+ temperature swings in a single day.

So you have a 30 year old GMT that doesn't work properly so you assume ALL heated seats require someone to sit on them before warming? Okay.
