gt4 is understeer city though and the cars don't feel right at all

what i did when I was new is hotlaps around the burgerking in AC until I understood car dynamics properly. then once I had the basics down, I studied proper racing techniques like lines and hitting apexes. GT might be able to teach you those, but the way the cars handle is just ass. the physics didn't become good until the enthusia guys came in for GT5P

>gt4 is understeer city
Is it even possible to oversteer and spin around a RWD car without assists in GT4? I honestly can't remember it ever happening, but its been a long time. These games are challenging enough for what they are (especially GT3), but until racing wheels became popular and accessible, the physics were built with gamepads in mind, so realistic oversteer was off the table. It would simply be too frustrating and finnicky to deal with on a pad.

Reminder to get your car submitted for the Mille Miglia Challenge. Please post a link on the doc with exclusively the car you will be using with only the livery included you intend to run so I don't fuck up the server settings. If you are using a Kunos car, go and specify what livery you want on the doc now. Even if the car has been used in an /ovg/ series before. If you're extra nice and wanna make damn sure I don't fuck it up, just make a variant of the car called "_username" (no capital letters you sick fuck) and submit that. Track pack (password protected) should be up sometime tomorrow night Euro time, I'm doing finishing touches tomorrow and then everything is set.

I'm fairly picky with arcade games, they need to have really tight controls, a nice challenge and a lot of style to really get me. I've tried Ridge Racer V on PCSX2 for the very first time (never managed to bump into it when I had my PS2 back then) and fell in love. The handling is weird at first but once you understand it, it gets addictive, you really have to be precise, one or two bad mistakes and you must as well reset the stage with a savestate. Shame that there are only seven courses (including the oval), you can't change your car after you select it, and the music is ass. Its basically a PS2 tech demo, being rushed as a launch title back in the day. But man, the gameplay is TIGHT, makes the PS2 burnout games seem floaty and unresponsive in comparison. I've heard that RR type 4 was the best, especially the style, presentation and music. I've tried but the handling is nowhere near as good as RRV, and besides, its locked at 30fps (I don't mind the PS1 graphics at all, in fact it looks pretty good to me). They I thought about trying RR7 on RPCS3, but I can't emulate it properly (I've got a humble ryzen 5 5600), the little that I've played of it, I noticed the gameplay isn't as tight as RRV because I'm sure there is some form of auto-pilot going on, smoothing out your drifts and avoiding contact with the wall at high speeds (its hard to explain but if you played it you know what I'm talking about). And then the series died for no reason. Imagine a RR with the style and music of Type 4, the tight gameplay of V and the stage variety and graphics of 7. It would be the perfect arcade game.

rrv is a direct sequel to the original arcade game made in a realistic type 4/rageracer style rather than a direct continuation of type 4's gameplay and aesthetic. sort of a rave racer 2.

rr7 is more or less just rr6 with bodykits, and rr6 itself is just ridge racer psp for home consoles. the drifting model is pretty ass but actually makes sense if you've ever played the original rr on psx using a gamepad, which is kind of what it's attempting to emulate. you're on a rail but you still have control over the radius of that rail based on your entry speed and drift angle, it's not quite as easy to master as it looks. rr6 has some cool ass, monstrously fast extra cars and the races against them can get fucking insane. at high speed classes the drifting/boosting model begins to make a little more sense and it's ultimately just namco's version of f-zero.

Interesting, looks like this series went through a lot of changes and experimentation. I would love a remake or spiritual successor to Type 4, with a handling model closer to RRV. I haven't completely given up on RR6-7, I'll try them again once I can properly emulate at a locked 60 fps (this was a PS3 launch title running at a silky smooth 60fps, at 1080p, with sharp visuals, if only more PS3 games followed that script...but it all went downhill from there). I even though about trying Type4 again, but I can't seem to find a 60fps patch for it (very common for PCSX2, not so much for PS1 emulation). It almost makes me sad that I never bumped into it when I was a kid with my PS1, could have gotten into the series way sooner.

>I haven't completely given up on RR6-7
Even though that on-rails auto-pilot really put me off. Some people like playing the RR games on a racing wheel, right? I played RRV on the d-pad (good for micro adjustments and fast left-right inputs), it never felt to me like the handling would benefit from a wheel, or even from an analog stick.

i have no idea if that's slowing you down or not, but ideally you should have the tc as low as possible where it still feels comfortable to drive and not cutting off that much power whenever you have any kind of slip angle. it should mainly be there just to save you from mistakes. you might end up being faster with a "safe" setup, but i have no idea what your driving looks like. ABS setting is more of a personal preference kind of thing, but it also depends on how good you are on using the brake pedal properly.

if you're actually serious about getting faster, using an AI coach like track titan (but costs money) and looking at track guides can help

GT is dorifuto city, GT2 is still slidey, GT3 you can do whatever, GT4 (and Tourist Trophy) is just fucking weird because wheelspin operates more like pushing the clutch in than anything. Rather than powerslides you just lose like 95% of forward propulsion and zero lateral force. Sucks too because TT is one of the only games where motorcycles actually steer like a motorcycle and not a boat, although gaining like a free 25% less braking distance by smashing the rear brake because the bikes won't lift the rear tire is also horrendous.
Anonymous No.28621554

Now that you mention it, yeah I remember how its really hard to powerslide (drift is off the table) in GT4, you simply understeer with no lateral force, like you're locked on rails.

>I've heard that RR type 4 was the best, especially the style, presentation and music. I've tried but the handling is nowhere near as good as RRV
RRT4 does have the best PS1 graphics/art, music, and overall presentation, but the driving was completely dumbed down because casuals couldn't figure out the 3 prior games. While it does have 8 tracks instead of 3, the overall progression structure is the Type 4's biggest weakness. Most people play through the GP in 30 minutes scoring first places and call it a day. But once you unlock the cars requiring first place finishes, you have to work your way down by placing different COMBINATIONS of finishes x manufacturer x team throughout the GP to start unlocking the rest of the cars. Meaning if you want to complete RRT4 and unlock all 321 cars you probably need to track every one of your finish combinations with an excel sheet which is fucking ridiculous.

it's a fucking garbage unlock system and it doesn't help that the game is short and samey with basically uncompetitive ai and not very challenging tracks while previous RR games usually at least had a rival car like the yellow solvalou that would fight your ass all the way to the finish.

No? Sim racing is for people who are too afraid or poor to do actual motorsport, so I understand why some people buy a simrig or whatever, but watching someone else in a simrig *pretending* to drive a car is beyond fucking pointless. If you want to watch realistic racing, then just watch an actual racing series, some of the more niche leagues are kino as fuck, and there are significant consequences for fucking up which make it all the more engaging.

honestly it seems to be a common car in places where people have low self-esteem in general and the vast majority of owners are perhaps not the smartest people. i myself was inspired to purchase one by a friend of mine who i might i might generously call a psychonaut (i caught him huffing air duster and had to talk him down off meth), who later bought a chally as a gift to himself for sobering up. a v8, of course.

it is a soulful sports car that makes you smile like you just took a fat bong rip to dark side of the moon
but it's also a very practical normal automobile that you can just own and not be like "owwwwh i cant do that"
also to be fair all the hood niggas i know have cherished bmw for better or worse
dodges are and i quote "harder to keep running" because quite naturally the hemi tick takes them after tyrone idles in his driveway for 3 hours mastering his soundcloud uploads instead of changing the 25,000 mile jiffy lube swill enterprise put in it before they sold it to him at 718% apr
