Designed and released cars from that specific era have a completely different design philosophy post 1979. Some models tracked into the early 1980s before being phased out, and those count among the exceptions.

Sold the 500 the other day. Tired of it not running right, and I just don't like working on it, so off he goes to some who cares. Found a 1979 Porsche 928 on marketplace that seems to be in good mechanical and body condition from the listing for $11.5k. Haven’t seen it for myself yet. I'll start my saying that I've never worked on one, but I'm assuming a '79 model would have Bosch K Jetronic/CIS mechanical fuel injection, which is notorious for its fickle and complex nature. It's absolutely possible to DIY, but you'll have to dedicate yourself to learning how.

Pintoanon here, I have returned after months of absence because life is like that. I have found the holy grail of engines for my intent and purposes this past weekend. The problem - complete assembly required.

What you are looking at is a completely disassembled 1988 Ford Thunderbird 2.3 TC engine - I got it for 250 - which is a phenomenal price for even just the block, and it comes with a new flywheel and its complete wiring harness. The next step is to build an electrolysis tank large enough to clean the components and clear any rust I see. My plan at this point is to mate it to a 4-speed toploader for my Pinto and ready her up to be racer ready. Granted, there's a LOT that I still have to do aside from toy around with a new engine, but I can dream.

I do not know how long it's been disassembled, but the pistons and piston arms have rust. If I cannot clean off the abrasions, I'd have to replace them. I ended up calling the parts department at a local Ford dealership asking whether or not there's a difference between modern turbocharged pistons and these, and they had no idea. Let me ask you guys, can I use modern pistons if the bore size is the same, or is there a complete difference in composition and thereby incompatible? I'm struggling finding good turbocharger pistons without paying through the nose for Essenger.

Until last Thursday, yes. A local realtor had a Mexican crew mow his property that adjoins mine and they hit the car with a tractor. I'm trying to avoid litigation to get them to pay out for the two cars they hit.

I took the mercury over a big dip in the road recently (and I know the front shocks are already pretty gone, but when I push down on the front corners it only bounces like 1 and a half times)
but anyway I went over this big dip and the whole car just dove down and then jerked upwards, I heard my tires chirp a bit, and then the front came CRASHING down, I GTFO the intersection but the front end was like multiple feet too high it felt and I think I might have gotten some air on accident.

So now I'm thinking I need to replace the front shocks. super budget build here, I'm still in school so I don't have a lot of money to throw around. I'm just going to get standard/economy grade Monroe shocks from rockauto and call it a day.

I have the service manual which makes it seem simple to replace the shocks. Just one bolt on top and two on the bottom, but I hear the top bolt likes to get stuck.

I'd like to do this by buying as few tools for the job as possible, any tips?

Also, what should I use to get the remnants of the old landau tops off?

Rockauto.com for the shocks. Get the cheapest PAIR you can. (Don't mismatch just to save a dollar on closeout inventory)
PB blaster the shit out of the bolts today, tomorrow and every day until the shocks come in the mail.

Landau top depends on its current state.
On some the vinyl will peel right off and the glue has degraded enough to be stripped off with solvent.
On others the glue has hardened and needs a sanding wheel/ wire wheel.

yeah I was definitely going to still get matching shocks lol, I'm not THAT broke.

there's basically no vinyl left on the tops except a little bit on the bottom of the C pillars under the side emblems, and on the B pillars around the opera lights, but there's still some crust and bits of the backing left in various places, but it's all hardened. So you think I won't be able to strip off what's left with solvent?

Start with a wire wheel mounted on an angle grinder (wear safety glasses, wires fly off constantly, you dont want one embedded in an eyeball- ask me how I know).

Yes its an awesome vintage vehicle with one hell of a cult following but its not universally desirable- thats a key aspect of "classic".

This falls under the matters of taste clause.

What would be considered "best in class" for American subcompacts from the 1970s if not the Pinto? The Lima 2.3 became Ford's bastion standard engine model that lasted for over twenty-five years and has proven itself so robust that its simple architecture provided higher levels of performance in SVO Mustang and Thunderbird cars up through 1996 when it was discontinued, only to be revived 15 years later. Not to mention its drivetrain system, even its simplicity made it profoundly robust when pushing hard on the 4-speed toploader.

Sure, it was reviled when the scandal hit, but it was still a profoundly big hit with most people that have ever driven one. Hell, for rally racing circuits, it's considered one of the greats because of its low-profile and lightweight, wide-bodied balanced design. The Escort Mk1 is still better in my opinion, but it made its cultural landscape as the "cure" for the VW Bug.

The funnier part about is that because they were so cheap and plentiful for their time, new drivers beat them to hell and back. But its history, absolutely is part of the charm. My Bobcat will absolutely get more attention then some schlub's random Corvette just for the novelty. And yes, Pintos have sold pretty darn well at Barret Jackson and Mecum in recent years. One marvelous example sold for 33k. This set off a domino effect for interest in these old babies.

Washing the thing takes forever but the ceramic detailer is definitely worth it. Keeps the dirt from sticking to the paint so it's glassy smooth after washing. I did it right after the cut and polish and I haven't had to clay bar it yet.

Nobody has ever tried to get into my car, but I don't live in a black area and I generally avoid black areas when I'm in the city. I put the club there because my gym is near a black area and methadone clinic but it's usually pretty quiet here, cops patrol pretty frequently.
I would try to get one. It's extra security and deterrence.
It's literally the club my parents used in the 90s when I was a kid.
Sometimes I also disable the ignition under the hood, depending on how paranoid I am that day.

some other thoughts i had now that i remember you're going to drive this in the cold - snap a pic of your engine bay for me. you need to make sure you have the pipes going from the exhaust manifold to the intake, and check the function of your thermac valve.
regarding the quadrajet: the bore for the throttle linkage is probably worn and causing a vacuum leak. (all these old carbs are). don't bother having it machined and fitted for a brass bushing, just get some teflon sheet, .3mm if remember correctly, and cut it and wrap it around the throttle shaft. you can see that's what i'm doing in the bottom left of the pic>>28632595

as for tuning, just follow the manual... there's a million guides on how to tune a q-jet

I had a cracked distributor cap and ordered another, but it's so cheap that when I put the coil on it one of the screws pierced into part of the housing with the rotor. Do I need to seal this? Will it cause a misfire?

Have an ever so slight case of dieseling after ignition cut off. Like I'm talking like just a rough stop of the rotating assembly. Holley 4160 66 main and metering plate secondary. Idles at about 12:1 a/fr, part throttle cruise will top out at 14.8:1. What might I be missing? Timing isn't extreme, either imo at 21* initial 33-4* full.

Possibly has the E4MC version And I don't recommend you touch it without knowing what you're up to and without the tools for resetting Mixture Control solenoid authority (that are long out of production). Probably just needs the idle mixture screw caps removed so the idle mixture can be adjusted anyway.

That's an effect of having the throttle open too much to maintain an idle speed. AFR at idle is ok and timing is not retarded so you may have too tight a converter (big rpm drop from free idle to in-gear) or have to rig for an idle solenoid so that the throttle plates close down more when you shut the car off.

The caps were removed by the PO. I should've clarified by "tune the carb" I just meant I want to make sure the idle screws are set at an appropriate level.

Ok yes it must be that. It's supposed to be the stock truck converter from 1969 (Ford C6, 2000 stall). I'm cammed at .563/.563, so, I don't have the greatest vacuum(15 in/hg) either and in gear I'm at 650 idle, but in P/N I'm at 850/900 rpm. I've got dual springs on the throttle,so it's pretty tight as is pulling the blades shut. I bought 4 second hand hubcaps for my 1956 chevrolet belair (not the ones in the picture), got them in really great shape, no dents, no scratches. But I've spent my whole evening and most of the night trying to install them in my car.

Now for the two rear wheels, it was impossible, I come defeated to post this, I tried everything, applying pressure using my legs, rubber mallet, pushing it in with my thumbs my palms my knuckles, it won't budge, I tried spraying WD40 in there, nothing worked, I barely managed to keep them stuck in place to see how my car looks with them new hubcaps, but I can still fit pinky finger in the gap between the rim and the hubcap, so they are lose as fuck.

What can I do about it? My hands fucking hurt.

Also yes, my car has the stock chevrolet belair rims.

It's been a few days but I want to say that I expected the car to run reasonably well and with the Mixture Control Solenoid duty cycle in the expected range with the idle mixture screws out 2.5 turns from lightly seated. US E4MC carbs also had "Double D" idle mixture screws just to further fuck with backyard mechanics and clearances meant you needed an appropriate tool as well. No room for just a screwdriver.

Yep, that'll do it. Worst one I ever saw was a C3 Vette that had so much cam it needed 1800 rpm free idle speed to idle at 800 or so in gear. In the interim you might want to rig for a solenoid and set it up in an anti-dieseling manner. It would also be useful in a load-compensating manner for A/C after an appropriate converter is installed.

Luckily I have that solenoid for the a/c, just not hooked up yet. I'm going to go GearVendors sometime this year so I'll be ordering a custom converter then. I can live with it for now. I'm just being paranoid since I spent a good chunk of change on this motor and want it to last 100k+ before I even think of needing a rebuild.

One more carb question: when up to temp, sometimes I'll get a slight bog that will lean it out to 17:1 for a split second before getting back to 12.5/13:1 for part throttle accel. But at the same time, If I go WOT, it will sometimes richen as fat as 10:1. Pretty sure the front float is about dead on. Maybe a quarter turn higher, but seems good. I may need to re-check rear float for being too high? Or is the secondary spring too light? I have 30cc pump, orange cam at factory position, secondary vacuum spring unsure, but think it's factory List 1850-2. Pump nozzle also likely factory 1850-2.

Sand with an aggressive grit sand paper like 60 or 80 get the cheapest roll of the stuff off amazon. Use a DA sander to save time. Sand it till you're left with the rust pits then use acid prep with a wire wheel to dig out the rust from the pits. Once you do that, it'll be ready for paint

Fingers crossed I won't have to rebuild it anytime soon. It's got the old lead heads and the valve guides are loose. Found all kinds of what I can only assume is camshaft bearing material in the windage tray. It still runs pretty smooth though. It's just a cruiser and I baby it. I had to floor it a couple times and I was scared the rod bearings were going to let loose. Kek.

I've heard of people putting a small amount of 2 stroke oil in the gas to compensate for lack of leaded gasoline. Why truth to that? I imagine it would help lubricate the seats and stems, but I don't know if it would help the way that lead did.

Picked up a 72 Skylark earlier this year, been slowly continuing the restoration- the previous owner is a family friend who couldn't continue due to some health issues. I replaced the crappy leaking Holley carb with a new Edelbrock, put on an aluminum intake manifold, flushed the coolant system a million times to get all the gunk out, replaced all the hoses and filters, changed the oil, got a new battery and tires, got the AC blowing cold, the door handles are functioning now, etc. etc.
Question for you all: now I'm at the bushings, and they are all somewhere between "completely fucked" and "missing entirely." The passenger side of the car is literally 1" lower than the driver side because the so many frame bushings are missing/squashed on that side. I'm trying to decide whether to have new bushings pressed into the original control arms (one of which is slightly bent), or just to replace the control arms entirely with new ones (I'd hang on to the originals though). Gonna be going with all rubber regardless of what I do, I have no interest in polyurethane.

It starts to break down immediately and does what youre seeing long before polyurethane even starts to hint at degrading.

Im not a fan of poly but that skylark is a prime example of why it's popular.
I'd personally press new poly into anything thats 99% in spec. A control arm thats noticeably damaged should go into the scrap bin (after you source an oem replacement).
Even if you stick with rubber id still press them i to the old arms and not even consider aftermarket parts from LMC or rockauto or anybody else

Brake lines are done. Looks like I have to swap the cluster to get an odometer. yeah, holding the pliers very tight while tightening the nut as tight as i could. at some point the stud wouldn't move even with tightening the nut so i didn't have to use the pliers, but the socket wasn't deep enough so i got a crow foot adapter, angled it 90Β° perpendicular to the torque wrench to maintain the same torque value.

hmmm...relatively cheap? i guess chrysler is out, the mopar tax is real. for the most part their engineering was always above ford and gm. but their relatively low production numbers means everything - the car, non-wear/consumable parts (e.g. interior bits) - is just gonna be more expensive in general.
C bodies are still somewhat cheap but they are definitely going up as more and more people get priced out of the more popular A, B and E bodies.

If I port my second set of heads and put CobraJet valves in them, I'd probably be doing the dual quad with Holley 390s. My cam isn't that big at only .563/.563 with stock D2TE truck heads and a 3 angle valve job, so my Holley List 1850-2 is more than sufficient at them moment.

I got this bit of juicy low rpm daily driving relevant dyno info. Did not expect the 6.0 to be on par with a 350 vortec. LS swap cucks btfo. The juiciest bit is the 8100 big block with a 4.5" mini stroker crank. You can pick up used examples of this 510ci block for about $2000.

That's on unibody cars when you're using the factory supplied emergency jack. For a floor jack you'll want to find a hardpoint on the unibodies and a reinforced section of frame for the BOF cars like a Panther.

Up front you'd want to use a doubled-up area like just behind the front tires where those two body mount insulators are on the right in the pic, or the crossmember under the engine. In the rear you'd use something like where the front of the rear lower control arms mount. Avoid the middle section and anything forward or aft of the wheels.

oh nah i've already got the foot mounted toggle switch, but i want a momentary button like how newer cars you can pull the blinker stalk back to flash your brights. I've got the wiring done and all so it'll flash the high beams even when the ignition is off, but I want a button that's about 20mm and sticks out a bit, a bit like a dome button, so that it's easy to press without thinking too much. The problem is the dome buttons I've found that do this, lack the high beam symbol on it

I don't want to use aluminum again because in my accident the aluminum line got crushed and could have easily caught fire. Yeah, there's a green American one that says "For all vehicles." for most brands. It's what I use in all my stuff, even like my 90's Caddy that originally had Dextrol. Prestone is usually on sale at the supermarkets more than the auto parts stores.

Unrelated, but I continue to find new signs of old Bubba fuckups in my 1973 Stingray. I took the driver side door panel off today to oil all the lock and door mechanisms because I needed like 80 pounds of grip to open the door from the outside.

I then find that a previous motherfucker screwed in the doorhandle with a Philips screw and stripped it, THEN, he broke the rails off the handle where it slides in. Had to use a mini vicegrip to get the old screw out 1/8 of a turn at a time, and now I don't know if I should blow $80 on another mechanism or just buy a good little hexbolt and crank it on tight enough that the rails don't matter. Man, this was supposed to be an easy evening. Oh, and the fire ants in the driveway and the mosquitos were getting me too, because why not? Fuckin' 45% DEET and they don't give a shit. Also, my new repro lock knobs are 1/16" too thick to fit, and the old ones have stripped splines so fuck that, too. Guess it's time to bust out the grinder and the pyramid bits.

Bad enough that none of the seatbelt upgrade holes were the correct size before all this...

damn. the inside left door handle of my dodge would never close properly and seemed rather hard to open as well, turned out the dumbass that installed the door lock linkages didn't stick it through the retaining/captive ring in the door skin, so it was experiencing a non-insignificant amount of lateral force/pressure. once that was fixed everything worked fine again.

This was just rust gumming up stuff outside. The inside worked fine. After oiling, maybe 20lbs and it pops right off just like the passenger side. It was crazy, though. I do 130lb on grip exercises, and I had to put some muscle into the driver door. Now, it's all great, minus the fuckups before me.

If it's all iron then green is fine. Otherwise use the OEM coolant specified. Green coolant is known to have poor interactions with aluminum and certain compositions of mls gaskets. Don't mix concentrate coolant with tap water.
