What went wrong on your car this week?
On mine I get to do the following:
>1.) Power window: $500 for regulator, motor, and labor (one side)
>2.) Window washer fluid tank: $100 + labor
>3.) May as well replace plastic coolant tank too to be safe - $150 + labor
>4.) Steering issues: tie rods, tie rod ends, steering rack: $500ish in parts plus around $300 in labor probably to replace it all.

Had to air up rear tires twice in one week.
Also found out from YouTube that modern drive belts don’t crack, they just wear down like a tire, so I need to properly check mine. I was surprised it wasn’t cracking at all last I checked it.

Got a soft pedal and weak brakes on my truck this morning. At first I thought it might've been the master cylinder but I checked it after it got lighter outside and one of the rear wheels looked like someone made spin art with brake fluid using my tire as the canvas. Hosed it off and reluctantly ordered new parts.
I've been watching videos of drum brakes for a while now because I hate drums and I'd been putting it off. I wish it had been the MC.

I removed and cleaned the filter inside the power steering pump reservoir. Then flushed all fluids.
Also fixed a spring I had put in wrong in the 4x4 shifter. Oopsie
And got a new radio. Major upgrade to my 90s tape deck. Not as cool tho
Next up will be a dipsitck tube o-ring.

The rear drums on my 80s Chevy van are fucked in every possible way and the only thing that saves me from having to do them is the pinion bearings also being fucked so I guess I'm just doing the whole rear axle :)

Shits been pissing power steering fluid for months. Gotta drop the subframe to replace the rack so I might as well do control arms, struts, engine mounts, etc. while I'm at it.

Little overwhelming, but I don't want to pull the subframe more than I have to.

may as well do power steering pump while you’re in there? And bushings if you’re taking apart the subframe…
I forgot I have a leak from my power steering pump so I’m replacing that $5 hose and putting on the correct clamps.
PS fluid looks fine, no metal shavings or anything in the strainer so I don’t want to replace the pump ($250) if I don’t have to, but feel like I should

Car A, did struts, the knuckle decided to go its own way and flopped outward while I was installing the strut despite being supported by a jack. Tore the inboard CV boot wide open. Now i get to do axles!

AC went out on car B - compressor engages briefly but no fan. Diagnosed the problem with a meter. Blower transistor failed. Removed it, took it apart, cleaned it, replaced the thermal fuse which had blown on a cold evening. Works fine now.

Car A is currently being set up for an engine swap, ECU setup is taking longer than anticipated.

Pump and pressure lines are good as far as I can tell, it seems like the leak is coming from where the steering column connects to the rack (can't actually see without dropping the subframe though) and I don't have the tools to replace bushings. I'd have to pay a shop for that, buy a whole subframe, or a hydraulic press.

Maybe someone can help me out. I recently moved back to Alaska and my old car that’s been sitting in the weather for 2 years is waiting for me. I spend like almost 1000 bucks to get it running again, and it’s been okay but for the past couple days, I’ve had an issue. If I drive it for less than 100 feet and then stop, like at a sign or a light, the car will just die. Seems like an electrical thing because my lights stop and the radio stops too. But if I manage to make it and continue driving, then it’s okay. Now I’m only really driving between the hours of 12 and 5 AM in case I get stuck at a red light and the car dies on me. Has anyone else see this problem or know of anything similar? If it’s a battery issue then it would just be dead all the time, regardless of distance driven, right? It’s driving me crazy and feels like a coin-flip whenever I get behind the wheels.

>>28626960
your battery is dead

>f it’s a battery issue then it would just be dead all the time, regardless of distance driven, right?
no, voltages can drop in mid-drive or at random and the alternator is usually enough to keep the engine running. if the car is new enough digital modules will simply stop working below nominal voltage and all kinds of weird shit happens even if the car technically runs.

battery is the likely culprit since sitting for 2 years in alaska can't be good for anything. an easy and cheap fix, i'd do that first thing before attempting any other diagnosis

Dammit. I literally just had the battery replaced when I fixed it back up. I was really hoping it was something I could fix alone without going to the shop. It’s a very old car, looks like it’s time to give up on it.

bad battery can mess up an alternator and a bad alternator can mess up a battery

Nothing really went "wrong" but my 4runner's stock rear cargo vent was missing its rubber flaps (likely got disintegrated after 25+ years) that would have prevented dust from entering the rear cargo so I replaced it with a third party vent as it does not use rubber flaps to prevent dust/debris from entering my cargo.
Found out the hard way when I went off roading last month and went to clean up my 4runner and saw all the dust near my rear wheel where the vent was.

Kick it. Alternatively, if it's really stubborn, use a rubber mallet on the tire's sidewall, alternating hits high and low. Don't hit the rim. To prevent this from happening again, get a carwash once a month or every other month to clear out dirt and grit. Get your tires rotated every 7,000 miles.

driver side front ball joint has been on its way out for a month or so now, but it's gotten bad enough that i finally ordered replacements for both sides. i've only done brake pads and spark plugs before, so hopefully it's not too bad of a job. thankfully, they're bolt in, so it shouldn't be too bad.
i also need to diagnose why my passenger side window doesn't work, replace front rotors and rear upper trailing arms.
the car (97 pathfinder) also has a valve cover gasket leak, but with the amount of work it'll take i feel like i'll be better off taking it to a shop. most things i've read recommend cutting away old hoses and replacing them while removing parts to get to the valve cover, but for some reason i always find hoses daunting. are they really that bad, and is there any way for me to order a bunch of replacements before attempting the job? beginner wrenchlet but i can't afford to take my car in, plus i'd rather just learn how to fix it myself.

Well, that was as fun as I expected. The part with the arrow was installed upside down (pic taken before disassembling) by the last guy who did it, so I put them both in like that and then took a look at the manual and had to redo both sides. I doubt it would matter though.
I highly recommend the proper tools btw, as I launched a 1/4" wrench into the stratosphere when a spring let go while I was trying to do some "trick" chrisfix made look super easy. And for bonus fun, my power bleeder decided to booger the MC and blow off after I walked away, spewing brake fluid all over the place. It's no longer with us.

Went for a test drive and locked the rears up a few times so I guess it's all good now.
