I get that, but I've seen too many animals, potholes, and obstacles barely outside of my headlights at night to drive at a serious rate of speed. If the road were illuminated with streetlights then sure, whatever, but I wouldn't just trust my high beams.
As for driving with other cars, yeah "swimming" is subhuman-tier reckless driving unless you're a suicidal biker. If the roads were similarly empty, though, I'd prefer to drive during the day.
The real problem with speeding is that it's a compounding factor when considering intersections, blind corners, and distracted/drugged/retarded driving, but those are inherently dangerous and lead to tons of crashes even at residential speeds so it's just a matter of lethality.
