Slow car owners
>"you don't get it. Its more fun driving a slow car fast"
>spends money on slower car
>drives it places where you could drive a fast car fast
>even if you couldn't, you'd at the end of the day you'd just be driving slow in a slow car otherwise
>insists on buying a manual
>can't heel toe or make use of any clutch function
>Justifies poor financial decision by rationalizing it as practical + fun while he pays more in gas, maintenance, and repairs from impulsive behavior/driving decisions
Why are so many car guys like this? Its not even specific to import guys. I've seen an endless amount of v6 domestic owners, bmw/audi drivers, and cheapass v8 guys who seem to be allergic to any meaningful modifications, and instead spend thousands on rims, suspension, etc, and pass up vehicles they'd actually enjoy just to cut up what they bought and then trash it. What causes this behavior?

because its more fun to redline 4 gears in the same time/space/room you hit to redline 3rd and i'm not racing anyone for money

slower cars are a better financial decision because their consumables are less, compare tire replacement costs for a miata vs a corvette/mustang. its nearly 3x as much and the wheelspin from the 8cyl means they last you 2-3 events instead of a season.

c5 corvettes are also at the point where being a 100k+ mile 25 year old gm catches up to them. the same money buys you a 60-100k mile 2009-14 mx5 (170hp/2500lbs) that needs literally nothing other than oil changes and *maybe* shocks or a clutch in that time frame. you'll get faster when you're not working on the car all the time (able to attend more events/drive more) and appreciate the ability to get in and drive it. fast cars arent fast when they're broken.

Thats for someone who goes to track days and has to worry about consumables and actually cares about seat time. I'm not talking about someone running an n/a 86 or ek hatch to stay reliable. I'm talking about people spending $10k on a manual is300 or 3 series or buy an s chassis and then defend their purchase while they commute in a car that does 3500rpm@70mph with no interior. I see it so much, and it really makes me wonder. Its like the people who have money and time to spend just spend it all on building a roll racing setup, and the people who barely have money for a project or 2nd car go into debt for a car they would enjoy less like picrel

I should have posted a chaser instead. My coworker paid $20k plus tip to import an auto chaser and kept trying to convince me its worth buying while I drive a $10k 6 speed gto and have been enjoying it while he's waiting on overseas parts to manual swap it. Miatas aren't bad cars but they're the next target for clueless millenials and zoomers after old corollas and 240sx's have dried up

>That's for someone who goes to track days

You're not racing anyone at a track day either or on the street. No one is going to argue with you that a Corvette is faster than a Miata. They'll argue when you claim the Corvette costs the same to keep on the road or race as the Miata.

The people doing that are teenagers who want to be drifters. They're doing the same to New Edge/SN95 Mustangs and C5/C6 Corvettes btw now that the supply of cheap RWD BMWs and Toyotas are running out.

To me it sounds like your coworker is enjoying a hobby and importing a RHD JDM car because it's genuinely what he likes, meanwhile you're going around telling people they are wrong because your domestic ,,bargain'' has more horses per dollar then ranted about it on a malaysian basket weaving forum by punching down on anything that is comparatively ,,worse" than a $12k vette.

it is fun to rip slow cars
but
stock s2000s and miatas aren't fun slow cars, they're slower than slow.
if your cars acceleration is competetive with modern 1320 piss missiles it's probably too fucking fast, if it's struggling to compare to sports cars from the 1960s it's probably shitty and too slow.
put a turbo in it or put a v8 in it you bitch.

Those 1960s cars get rocked by Honda Odysseys around corners though. Never mind something like a new Miata or a S2000. Even those dominate pro touring boomer cars.

I've been waiting to go on a drive with him and he's stuck waiting for parts to finish a manual swap. I told him he should've just bought an isf or a g8 gxp with that money. He says "nah bro the jz engines are good for like 450hp with just a turbo kit and tuning". It took $19k to buy it, months for his car just to get to port and a few thousand later just to get it road worthy. And now its just a factory 60k mile auto chaser. Every time I bring it up it just turns into a "nah man just trust the process bro" discussion, and he's not the only dude I've been around who's gone a similar route.

>allergic to any meaningful modifications, and instead spend thousands on rims, suspension, etc
If by “meaningful modifications” you mean power mods. Those are the worst bang for your buck, besides a tune for a turbo car, but you’re likely fucking with longevity.
Suspension is probably the best bang for buck, although I don’t do it because aftermarket coil overs ride too rough for public roads imo. Wheels obviously don’t give much practical benefit, but obviously change the look a lot.

Okay so his project has a vision, requires more time and process, and costs more relative to what he would gain. And? NOOO DON'T GET COSMETICS, YOU SHOULD HAVE SPENT THE MONEY ON A STAGE 2 TOON JUST BECAUSE OKAY???

I don't know who hit you over the head, but the same thing you're saying here:
>YOU SHOULD HAVE SPENT THE MONEY ON A STAGE 2 TOON JUST BECAUSE OKAY???
Is essentially what he is saying, except I'm not saying to get cosmetics. I'm saying to get a cheaper car with more performance and easier parts to find cause its not a rhd jdm taxi. I don't think you understand that we work the same job and make the same money. I can tell you right now, he's not going to finish that car, and he's going to lose at least 10k on it when he's done. If you like spending money and wasting time, then great deal. You don't have to dick ride my retarded coworker to say that

A decent ISF is $20-30k

A G8 GXP is $30-40k

He just wanted a project and even he would've been better off buying a factory turbo car for $12-20k and swapping it to manual

The main issue is my [coworker] is one of the only people I can talk to about cars and he thinks he's going to build a chaser that he can use for drifting later down the line when he's going broke just getting it running here. I'm not butthurt cause his monster chaser is going to beat my cammed monaro. I'm irritated cause everything is all talk and its gonna be winter and it hasn't driven enough to get gas yet, and its still a factory 2jzge auto 4 chaser. He's going to be $30k into a car thats over 25 years old before he'll even be at the point where he can use it for what he intends to.

I think we learned from the previous thread that the only places you can drive a C5 to should be accessible by flat smooth roads with really small inclines, without speed bumps and without ramps.

It unironically is fun to drive a car hard, and you can't do that with a real modern sportscar outside of the track. This is why Miatas and Groms sell. You can actually race them around without killing yourself or getting your license pulled.

the fun of driving ANY car is driving it at it's limit. if you do that in a ferarri you're reaching deadly speeds that can't really be achieved on public roads. but if you're in a hyundai getz you can reach it's limit at much safer speeds.

i like(d) driving my hyundai getz on dirt and gravel roads to induce lift-off oversteer and be on the car's limit of adhesion at all times, and at safer speeds.

if i had access to a racetrack then of course i'd rather be in the ferrari but since the public roads are my ply ground then i'm better off in my (old) hyundai getz.

even around a track I think slow shitboxes are more fun. I don't have the skill to bring a hypercar to its limits, while I can come much closer to a miata's.
and if I fuck up in a miata, I'm not doing so at 170 mph
