The problem is that the M3 probably costs as much as the Lambo in every sense at that point.

It's a cool thought, but at that point you are either a master mechanic whose life revolves around the car or you pay someone a minimum of $100 an hour every couple of weeks.

If that source didn't exist, the source would be common sense and understanding that you don't squeeze out extra hundreds of HP through magical ingenuity.

That's the huge poorfag misconception (I say this as someone who drove a $1500 car for 5 years). The misconception is that you do so something clever and get disproportionate at results. At most, you are trading reliability, comfort, gas mileage etc for some performance at a high cost.
