I've realized that /o/ never talks about the fifth gen 4runner because it's just so accepted as the hands down best 4x4 that there's really nothing to discuss. Sure, soccer moms sometimes give it a bad reputation, and the gx 550 / land cruiser is the same but "better", but with the factory and aftermarket options what they are, there is no contest.

toyotas are massively overrated and toyota fanboys keep the prices beyond what is reasonable
always underpowered which is why their drivetrains always hold up for a long time, don't get me wrong they are decent for what they are, but rarely worth the toyota tax you have to pay these days to buy one

In general, I completely agree with you. However, there are no other options if you are looking for a true 4x4 rig around $30,000 that will last you decades. Some trucks might come close, but I do recognize that body on frame SUVs are typically the go-to choice for 4x4 activities.

Shorter wheelbase and tighter turning radius than the 4runner = more nimble on trails.

Thats without getting into the fact that Broncos have limited slip and locker options from the factory. And a 30 yearold truck is putting out 50 more torques.

The Cleveland is an amazing engine.
So is the V6 SHO out of the Taurus (4 valve head designed by Yamaha).
The 2.3L Lima is considered the standard for its class and dominates pony class dirt oval racing and was used in the fox body SVO turbo cars (as well as the earlier Turbo GTs that nobody paid attention to).

Pretty sure those got the G80 or "gov bomb". They lock up at low speeds when the wheel speed difference is ~100rpm or something. When they do decide to engage they do it very harshly which can shock load the diff. This only gets worse with low speed, high torque scenarios and gets even worse when you run big tires. Definitely not ideal for serious off road applications. Thankfully there are a plethora of aftermarket auto and manual locking diff options out there for those trucks.

>No locking center diff
That's some Escalade shit, 2003-2013 specifically. Earlier and later models had some means to engage the front in the transfer case.

Moot point.
I can count how many escalades have left the pavement on one hand.

Could that be because there is a similar Tahoe or Yukon but with a proper transfer case?

Target market for the Escalade are nit the type of people that would play in the dirt.

Probably the same can be said about the Discovery 2, most buyers were Britaboos, some were willing to LARP with lots of pristine gear and mandatory Camel Trophy decals. I think some years or some trims of D2 eventually received the locking center diff, so a tiny bit of the owners might actually take it offroad (some known to me even swapped the transfer cases). But the tiny bit of the owners do it with Escalades. The one pictured has an Atlas tcase btwdesu.

But its such a tiny percentage that on paper it could be attributed to a rounding error.
Statistically that Escalade doesnt exist.
Same with this porsche.

if you want to be in the wilderness you dont take a fucking awning with you. that is for people with RVs in state parks and electrical hookups.

currently have a C2500 long bed and I think I'm gonna sell it for a K2500 suburban.

I want to go offroading and in particular car camping, but the utility of a bed can't be understated, I'm buying lumber pretty often and other large things, most recently a table saw. Plus moving my motorcycles around, though I guess I could get a dedicated trailer for that.

I'm torn, I don't need third row seating but an enclosed rear would be great, maybe a k2500 pickup with a camper shell?
