I'm driving a 330i with the B48. Bought it a year ago.

Before I bought the car, I also had to decide between the 330i and the 340i.
My uncle, who already owned the 330i (and still does), let me go for test drive. The car is surprisingly fast.
Until then, I had a E92 328i (RIP old buddy ;_;), but the new 330i felt way faster.
The interieur also felt high quality and my uncle never had any problems with it, despite the high mileage.

After that, I had to compare the prices of the 330i and 340i and in the end, I decided that paying 15k EUR (~17k USD) more for two more cylinders and more power isn't worth it, at least in my case.
One of the reason being that I live in the city and my surroundings are not wide, open and long roads like in the US and there are a lot of speed camera traps. I guess owning a 340i in the US makes more sense.
The other reason was that I found an online listing for a 330i, very well equipped (M package, M Performance with LSD and so on), with low mileage and for a cheap price.

Thank god mine is RWD, it slides nicely and I can do some drifts at night. AFAIK the US only gets XDrive, which is a shame.
Also, the engine has a VERY high torque output, but the turbo lag is kinda bad.
It can easily keep up with the hot hatches around here, like the Golf GTI and the i30 N (yuropoor version of Elantra N).

Feel free to ask me more about the 330i.

The US still gets RWD. X Drive sells well because it gets snowy in a lot of places and Americans are terrified of cars that are fun to drive any other way than in a straight line, but I'd prefer a RWD if at all possible. I'm in the military and still shuffling around bases though, so I'm probably going to put off buying any of these until I know where I'm going to be living for the next several years. I'd consider X Drive if I get sent somewhere with shitty weather, it'd be my daily car.

How much are you typically able to work on yourself without specialized tools or needing an entire day? I'm joining the dark side after giving up motorcycles, I'm new to working on cars. I have experience with bikes and jets though.
>>28656337
Yeah, that's kind of my thought process. I'm definitely not just buying it for the badge, I like the feel of them. I've test driven both the B48 and the B58, it's hard to get a sense for how the differences would shake out on a daily basis though. There are some used M3s from the early 2000s in my area, but it doesn't really make sense for me to pick up a high-mileage, temperamental performance machine at this point in my life, as tempting as it is.

Ask youself this:
How do you usually drive? Like a psycho? Accelerating and going 100% full throttle all the time? Are there long stretches of empty highways in your area? Do you feel threatened by other people's cars?
Then get the 340i, otherwise get the 330i.

Also, you're asking /o/, a board for car enthusiasts, if you should get the stronger and larger engine.
The answer is obvious.
Try to do some research on your own, maybe even rent each car for a day and drive like you usually would.

This entire conversation is pointless.
You're not trying to decide between two entirely different cars.
They are the same brand, the same series, the same model. The only difference is the engine, and hence a question of "Can I actually afford this?".
If you can, get the 340i, end of discussion.

The 6 cylinder cars are better made. They dont state this but it is clear that the fit and finish is better on the sixes. The 330i is great but they are not as well made as the M340i. All that said, none of them are as well put together as the E90 series were when they were new. Itโ€™s all about what you want. If you really care about performance get the M340i, but then youโ€™d be thinking โ€œI could have spent a bit more and had an M3โ€. Or if you got the M3 youโ€™d think โ€œI drive this fast and hard once every few months so I should have just got a 330iโ€

If I were you, look at a lightly used 540i. Itโ€™s the best car BMW have made in over a decade

Anon, all 2-series and newer BMWs suffer from a fatal flaw: the steering is awful
Also, they're mostly all automatics now. And on the manuals they did have previously, they added a clutch delay valve for zoomers. The seating position is also tilted weirdly for safety & due to the huge transmission tunnel.
I recommend just buying a 228i manual if you're dead-set on a BMW. Or maybe a 135i (6 cyl, manual transmission, hydraulic steering)
Anonymous No.28657374

I drove a 230i before settling on an m235i for the extra 6-cylinder power. I regret not getting a 228i/230i in manual. At least the m235i appreciated well, but the driving experience was more like a Mustang/muscle car and not at all like a sports car. Either way, the steering still would've killed it for me with a 2-series, so a 1-series would've been best.

The oil filter housing is easily accessible.
Longitudinally mounted engines in general are easier to work on, since you have more space on the sides, plus the hood of the 3 series is quite long.
What do you plan on doing on your own? Heavy maintenance stuff like extracting the engine from the bay? Or just simple stuff like changing oil, transmission fluid, air filter and other basic stuff?

BMW literally have no feel. They intentionally removed all steering feel and to top it off, told actual car people to fuck off when they complained about the shitty steering, because the bulk of their consumer base keeps responding to surveys with "I want less steering feel" (this is true).

Attempting to shift the focus from steering effort to the feedback routed from the pavement to the driverโ€™s hands, I asked if any EPS strides had been made in that specific area. Kistler responded: โ€œWe surveyed both current BMW 5-series customers and owners of competitive models, asking, โ€˜What are your wishes?โ€™ We have two million customers around the globe whoโ€™ve purchased the 5-series during the past five years, which results in a broad spread of demands. Our job is to fulfill those mainstream needs.

And maintaining a bike and a car really wasn't that hard, especially because I just had a Camry. Financially it wasn't really a strain either because motorcycles are cheap. But I'm quickly learning just how cucked the car industry has become thanks to emissions and safety standards and the fact that they need to be designed for the masses who just want to get to work. Motorcycles are a niche product for enthusiasts that are still in the Wild West as far as regulations go, so no wonder you can get an actually aesthetic machine that goes from 0-60 in 3 seconds for $5,000.

With the M package, they come with an LSD and the 330i is quite nimble (50:50 weight ratio, less weight due to the smaller engine).

Where else should I ask this sort of question? Reddit is Reddit, and ChatGPT only acts like it knows what it's talking about.

It's not really about what people would think, it's more so just about the character of the car. I feel like the question has already been answered in this thread, you should absolutely go for the 6 cylinder if you can swing it. I just don't know what the overall cost of ownership is going to be like, but that's any sports car I guess. This is a new realm to me. It's not that I can't afford it, I could buy one outright if I wanted to right now, but 1. I don't want to make a major financial decision without weighing just how worth it it is to get the premium version of an already luxury car, and 2. I'm still in training, I could get sent overseas and lose a ton of money from having to sell it. That happened a few years ago when I got sent to Japan and I just had a Honda Accord.

I can accept that a car won't accelerate as quickly, the safety and convenience is a worthwhile tradeoff. Even something like a Miata is going to be miles safer and have a ton more storage space than a motorcycle. What I can't stand is having no torque, which was sadly how the IS 350 felt when I test drove it the other day. The 500 would certainly have more, but at that point, why not just get the M340i, shit, even an M3?

If that is a real concern, then you should buy a shitbox instead of blowing your hard earned cash on a fancy new BMW.
Economically, it makes more sense to buy a 20-30 year old car that is easy to work on and maintain.

I don't know where you're stationed at, but here in Europe you'd go for something like a ZC31S or clapped out E36.
In the US it's probably the Dodge Neon.

I have a Camry right now, I'm probably going to keep it until I have a permanent duty station. In the Florida panhandle, there are several old M3s that can be had for great prices, I just don't know how feasible something like that will be to daily. Like I said, I used to be an aircraft mechanic, but working on cars is new to me. Changing the oil and individual parts is child's play, but I don't know how complex jobs get with old sports cars or even regular cars with a lot of miles, for that matter.

The thing that gets me is I was only able to live with such a boring car because I rode my bike whenever I could. Now that's gone, and I'm kind of going insane and want a new machine to connect with.

There's your answer.
Old M3s are really fun to drive, they are (as stated by you) cheap and can actually easily be worked on.
Just prepare to work on it A LOT.
If you enjoy working on machines, you can't do anything wrong with the M3.
Besides, even if you bought it and you were told to move, you could easily sell it again. That way, you wouldn't have to sell an arm and a leg to incorporate the losses compared to a modern BMW.

I was conservative with my estimate. bhp is irrelevant. If you've ever drive a car with more than 400hp (I doubt you have) then you'll understand how important it is for top speed, regardless of how "slippery" you think the 911 is. Back to the video games, friendo where you can do 190mph in your 300hp shitbox.

>they added a clutch delay valve for zoomers
The clutch delay valve is to prevent shock load to the driveline when shifting at higher rpms. Down sides are faster clutch wear since it causes the clutch to slip between shifts and makes it harder to shift smooth overall. I pulled mine out and chucked it inna woods.

go for the one which you can afford. if you can delay a car then save for the 40i but only if it won't make a dent in your wallet.
usually those who 40>30 are dumbass zoomers who race in the city to measure dicks. but theyre dumb niggers since a built n54 will be much cheaper hp/$ for ego racing.
B58 is great but now it has the stereotype of boy racers sadly.
