They always had dubious quality (well not always, Datsuns were pretty good).
Nissans in my mind are like driving at 11/10ths - you do an awesome lap where you're cornering at the absolute limit but then you fuck up one corner and crash and the whole lap is ruined, then some guy who's driving at 9/10ths the whole lap cruises past you.

That's what Nissan build quality is like - they will make an awesome car or an awesome engine with all the latest and greatest tech which is better than everyone else, but then they'll fuck up one crucial component which just ruins the whole thing. Of course the shortfalls can often be rectified with aftermarket solutions, so the cars are still special, but it's easy to see why the 9/10ths manufacturers are doing more sales.

Nissan was never really known for reliability like Honda/Toyota. Add to that shitty CVTs as well as selling to anyone with a pulse (including melanin enriched individuals that can't maintain a car), and their reputation was pretty much ruined. Infiniti has never been a particularly respected brand either so that wasn't going to save them. Maybe if they'd made a decent competitor to the BRZ or Miata, or maybe just made a dead reliable reasonably priced sedan they would have scraped back some recognition, but I think it's too late now

I honestly kind of like Nissan. I wish they would completely scrap everything they make that isn't RWD based, or commercial vehicles. But I know they primarily rely on Altima and Rogue sales to stay relevant so that would not be sustainable at all but it would 100% vindicate them in my eyes.

>They stopped making iconic cars.
People forget that said iconic era of 90’s cars also almost bankrupt Nissan which is why they had to partner up with Renault in the first place. People are less inclined to buy sports cars now than they did back then so bringing back another Silvia or GTR wouldn’t save them from this situation (it would help brand awareness for performance a little tho). Besides, Nissan did well with just the Z and GTR in the 2000’s so not having a Silvia or Pulsar didn’t hurt them

Absolutely retarded take.

You left out that under Ghosn, we also got the GT-R and FM platform. Also the Nismo department was living up its namesake and the Infiniti brand was at its most relevant. It's very obvious to non-retards that from the time he got Nissan out of bankruptcy in 2000 and then Nissan becoming a total shitshow by the greedy dumbfucks that ousted him that Ghosn was saving Nissan from itself.
Anonymous No.28661312

Those aren't mutually exclusive concepts. Both are true. Basically greedy execs wanted Ghosn out so they launched an investigation against him and found that he was misappropriating company funds and resources. Thing is that the investigation revealed that it wasn't just Ghosn, but also all the other execs were doing the same thing. They even got the investigator arrested to get them to stop digging.

Toyota is burning thru that good will fast, everything they’ve made since ~2019 is a POS
I’m on the rav4um and the new ones short out and die on the road if you drive them in rain. Tons of drivers with the same issue. Toyota’s response, “these weren’t meant to be driven in heavy rain, pull over when it’s safe and wait for the storm to pass”
These go for like $50k

Tarnished brand image due to loose lending and spotty quality. Nissan is now the poor people’s brand and nobody with other options wants to be associated with them, which means it’s now harder to sell higher priced cars.

Does that really matter outside of luxury makers? Mass-market brand buyers only care about getting a car that gets them from point A to point B reliably and cheaply. Hyundai had an abysmal reputation and they managed to rehabilitate themselves, even though their cars are still pretty shit. No reason to believe Nissan can't do the same.
Anonymous No.28666022

I think it still matters on some level and for retaining long term customers. The problem Nissan has is that outside of the occasional Z car, Nissan is never anybody’s first choice for anything. They get people who don’t care about cars and just need something cheap, but they are fickle customers and there’s next to no money to be made racing to the bottom for them. People get a Nissan because the RAV4 or CR-V was too much money at the time and they had to settle.
But I’m with you, their current problems aren’t insurmountable. The Kicks is a great shitbox for the money, and the Frontier is a good truck, but the rest of the lineup needs some heavy reworking which it looks like they’re starting to do already.

I hear this a lot but Nissan has used the internal water pump design for decades and it's never been a big issue, very rare that you'd ever have a catastrophic failure out of one and even then it's not so much the cost that it takes to fix it, but it is a time consuming job. Frontiers tend to have annoying problems at around 150k miles or more but water pumps/oil pumps are not one of the major concerns.
