Looking to buy my first car in the next month or so. I'm currently leaning towards used CRVs (open to other suggestions) for the cargo space and ok gas mileage. Budget is around 10k and I live in the US. I can stretch the budget if necessary but I'd rather not do any long term financing.

Search Facebook marketplace and Craigslist. Don't buy from a dealer. The CRV is a good vehicle. $10k is more than you need.

CRV or RAV4 are great cars and you can usually find them cheap. Do not be dissuaded by something with 150k miles but don't pay too much. They're cheap to fix and will run with minimal maintenance

Any specific years I should look for (or avoid)? I'd like to buy from a private seller to avoid dealer fees and taxes but I also don't feel confident enough to not get fucked over. I'll have to bring someone more knowledgeable with me.

2002-2016 with the K series engine. You don't need to be an expert. Check for rust underneath the car. Check the dipstick. If it's low on oil just 360 and walk away. Take it for a test drive where it reaches highway speed. At the end of the test drive let it idle for a bit to ensure it doesn't overheat. The cars at dealerships aren't more reliable than the cars sold by private sellers.

Sure, in the case of OP, he's not gonna get away with that much, but he can still come in and claim his 10K he wants to spend of a car was actually 4K. The clerks don't give a shit, and your registration is good to go.

If having a SUV isn't a priority, look at any generation Lexus LS. It sucks on gas mileage, but it will outlive you and parts availability will be strong in another 10 years. Also look at the Acura RDX, same platform as the CRV, but has much better creature comforts and interior quality. You can get them for around the same price as CRVs. But you should've read the sticky first imo.

Not the RDX iirc, its only recommended but you can get away with 87. The Lexus on the other hand, does need it. Especially the V8s they make, the old ones can handle 87 from time to time. But its worth it if you can handle paying for premium gas. I would also recommend the GX470, as I started off with an 2004 one and enjoyed it. However, they are getting price scalped now. 2005 ones with 200k miles, covered in rust are still going for $10k.

If practicality is what you need you can't beat the accord desu.
Space, comfort, economy, surprisingly good handling, it does it all.
Up until the 11th gen the higher trim options were basically 90% of an E-Class or 3 Series for half the price and twice the reliability.

That's a solid choice

04-07 highlander with the v6 is fantastic. 07 has basically everything modern you want for safety and normal driving. You don't need auto climate.
