How serious are "autocross" people? Can I just show up in my 20-year-old stock commuter sedan and try to drive between the cones for fun, or are they going to be pissed because I'm a clueless retard knocking all their cones over?

There are some tryhards but they're just racing for their class. They don't usually get mad at you knocking cones over because you'll have to work and pick up cones too.

I've heard the most fun class is the basically stock one. You should go and have fun, they'll have walk-throughs and stuff for beginners so you don't fuck it up too much. Also like the other anon said you help pick the cones up yourself.

Yes, there are people qualifying for nationals or whatever, maybe one person, MAYBE, but yeah overall extremely low elitism in this realm and all of it will be in a class way outside of you.

Can't speak for all autocross dudes, but my local club is super fun, laidback and welcoming. Half the cars are shitboxes just hooning for fun, but even the dudes in very capable sports cars or fully prepped race cars seem to be nice and helpful. Pic related is from the last race; dude was up on three wheels for 50% of the course and it was hilarious.

I went once several years ago. Everyone was super chill. Didn’t get to drive though because 2 people wrecked so they cancelled the event.

Really depends on the group. My local group had a bunch of people trophy at solo nats over various years but even still they're happy to pay it forward and coach novices. Their times are usually indexed differently since they are considered "pro" but it's neat to see your times ranked against competitive drivers.

Weird to have a tree so close to an airstrip. One of the main challenges of venue selection and course layout is trying to get the driving line at least 50 feet away from anything you can hit. I would put ditches or even turf in that category. I have seen engine fires, curbed wheels, massive fluid leaks, and even a bystander getting hit one time. I would say incidents happen less than once a season over many events though.
