I wanted to get a floor jack and some jack stands to do small maintenance tasks on my car, but I'm not sure where I should buy them.

I've looked through Amazon and I swear there's 50 different versions of the same floor jack from 50 different companies. They all have different paint and labels, but the jacks themselves all look nearly identical. Even some of the reviews point out similar failures.

how heavy/cumbersome are they when actually using them? iirc they're about 15 kg each side, seems like it'd be a hassle to lug around

You're taking about something that will hold up a car and move it up and down on command, 30lbs isn't too bad

get them fuckin aluminum body ones from harbor/ freight or autozone.
only problem ive ever had with them is dirt getting into the valve and having them stick, probably could fashion a dust cover boot for it.

the "companies" are all named some random unpronounceable gobbledygook like HTOMT or TRSVN aren't they, fun fact they all come from the same chinese warehouse. the reason amazon is overflowing with chinese crap nowadays is because of all those FBA courses you might've heard of a few years ago, mostly pre-Covid. those retards unleashed a tidal wave of identical products hoping one would catch on and they'd make it big.

I recommend searching the Facebook marketplace or craigslist for an older Craftsman or snap-on jack.
Sometimes you can find ones at a estate sales for a hundred bucks or less.
They're going to be significantly higher quality than any of those ching chong copies
TrAsh.
As far as Jack stands, make sure to get the ones with the lock built in at them.
It's usually a rod or a bar that keeps the teeth from ratcheting downwards

Wheel cribs are also a cheap way to get your car off the ground for larger repairs.

they're all much of a muchness as long as they're a reputable brand. I went for a halfords low profile 3 tonne jack, and it works fine, never even needed to top up the hydraulic fluid so far (owned it for about 2 years, use it around once a month)

>aluminum
why? it's not like you're saving any weight over a decent steel jack.

Aluminum jacks are substantially lighter.

And since you're not carrying it on a 27 mile hike through the mountains who fucking cares?

OP, they ARE all the same. Its how chinese products work. They make a million cheap pieces of shit, put them in a warehouse, then start selling them to customers by slapping a different label or coat of paint on them. Its more common than you think.

Get more jack and jack stands you think you'll need today because you may upgrade vehicles in the future and having to buy the same tools (of the correct size) again is a bit of a gut punch. There isn't much of a cost difference today if you for example got a 5ton jack instead of that 2 ton jack. Same for jack stands and wheel chocks. Get the biggest/strongest/heaviest stands that will fit under your current vehicle and learn how to use them safely. They'll last the rest of your life. The hydraulic jack should last at least decade or two depending how hard you're using it so spend the extra $50 on the entire set because nothing too strong ever broke.

Forgot to mention, Harbor freight or Walmart if you'd like to buy locally, doesn't really matter if you're buying online because again, its all the same shit from the same factory.

Good on you for trying to wrench on your own car. Start with the simple stuff like an oil change, maybe brake pads, tire rotations, and general inspections. You'll have a neat little project on the weekend, save a few bucks, learn something new, and potentially make your vehicle last much longer.

Project Farm did videos for both jacks and jack stands. You can pick the best ones in your budget.

US Jack Co. for both stands and jack. American Made. Weight is a small price to pay. You'll be keeping it in the garage anyhow yeah? You'll be using as much strength with a wrench, so may as well get the good shit.

Just buy it from Harbor Freight. They run sales on them all the damn time and you don't have to deal with dodgy Amazon bullshit.
