wiring up a windshield washer switch, i want the wipers to have a delay action when they run so the washers will spray water as soon as the switch is pressed, then a second later the wipers will activate then stay on for a certain amount of time after the switch is released, what electrical components could do this? is there such a thing as a 12v time delayed relay or something?

If access is limited, slice the nuts on each side. If the nuts are seized and the bolt is spinning thats usually "a good thing" because you can spin it to position the nut for clearance on the second cut.
Don't be afraid to cut the head of the bolt off if its easier access than the nut side.
Don't stress over damaging the shock but careful not to nick the chassis mount

On one side, I was able to get the nut higher up on the stud before it totally siezed up, so I'll try cutting the stud below it. On the other side I'll have to cut the nut up.
The "head" side of the "bolt" would actually be the shock tube side of the stud. The stud is directly attached to the shock. I don't mind cutting up the old shocks to get them out though.

Factory intakes are kind of a hassle. Most are going to have some kind of damage.
If its not a PPP vehicle then id personally rather run a "new" intake. 1/4 the price and your not going to have to deal with warping or pitting on seal surfaces.

This is the third one I tried to buy, now being sold from the individual who bought it from the museum that had terms I didn't care for.
I've tried to buy 5 in total.
What do I do when I took out a shock absorber and the old mounting hardware doesn't quite match up to what came with the new one?
picrel is how the old shock was mounted up from what I can tell after I took it out, it has 3 washers used, and there was no washer on top of the lower bushing, I looked to see if one fell but I didn't see anything.
The new shock looks like the right part but the mounting hardware came with 2 bushings and 2 washers, not 3. It came with two nuts, so I assume one is a spare, but it also came with two spacer looking things that seem like they could slip over the stud and I don't know if I need to use them.

So the new shock is installed. It was a cheap one from Monroe and in fact when I push down on that corner of the car it actually bounces worse than before. The old shocks looked to be in poor shape and the bushings were pretty shot but now I'm not sure if I should just put the old shock back in and wait until I can afford Bilsteins.

well i found out why my car was shorting out.
cant tell you why it happened but the wires to the ammeter shorted out and melted the caps on the back.
probably because it's chinesium, no clue.
but the previous owner put it in probably 30 years ago and threw out the original.
kinda funny because a model A youtube channel recommended getting rid of repros and getting an original because they'll short out.
so here i am! happy to have a safety fuse installed or it couldve caused a fire.
for those who dont know the fuel tank is right next to the windshield, in front of the instrument panel. i found it because i was going to monitor the ammeter to see if anything is going on. i went to tap it (why? same reason i click my tongs i guess) and noticed it was hot.
removed the instrument panel to find these bits.
thanks for reading my blog. i'm just so thrilled to have found all the major bugs.
i simply removed the ammeter, connected the wires together and wrapped it in electrical tape, turned the keys and hit the start button and she started right up.
ran her for a few minutes to see what happened, nothing out of the ordinary.
the tape stayed nice and cool for about 10 minutes.
deciding it was safe- i took her out for my first drive ever.

And to answer your actual question....
I guess it depends on what you mean by "wet".
Ive done rainy days with them and they were more than adequate but I've also been caught in a monsoon and they sucked. But then I probably would have been screwed with anything less than super swampers that day.
Theyre not a general commuter tire thats for sure. I wouldnt DD them unless I lived in the southwest where rain is measured in tenths of an inch.
Not to mention tread life is lower than expected.
anyone know where to find a wide variety of cable ends? im trying to shorten a clutch cable a bit, and it has a stop on one end that looks like a washer stud, all i can find off of hardware sites like mcmaster car are ball stud ends. i can go get another clutch cable with the exact same end, so i know they're available somewhere. any ideas?

You can get an FE engine from ~660 pounds dressed in iron down to around 450 if you min/max aluminum components.

I do know a guy that has 1 of 2 known factory aluminum block SOHCs.
Mine are standard center oilers.
FEs have skirted blocks and shaft mounted 1.73 rockers with 2.02/1.55 valves from the factory. They can make power extremely well. Most people just dont want to put the effort or money into them since everything is at minimum 50% more expensive.

In spirit, yes, though it's not an actual quonset. It *was* made during WWII to house refugees, if I recall correcty, but the lower half is made from brick, and the corrugated parts are made from the thickest asbestos sheets I have ever seen. Still on the fence about pulling it all down and rebuilding the thing to be a little less... cancerous... but for now, it's functional, and so long as we don't disturb it, it doesn't pose a health risk.

if a nicop brake flare is slightly lopsided would it still seal? is it more forgiving in that aspect than regular steel lines? The amount of lopsidedness would be if you looked at it head on down the tube, you could barely see a sliver of an arc of the inside surface

nah, the actual seating surface of the flare is damaged - there's a groove cut into an arc of it, in the shape of the line I drew in red of pic related. probably from when I tried to crank it down tighter to seal it up. Right after it comes out of the master, it bends 90 degrees straight down then bends again towards the firewall before going across. I'd have to rebend all of that to extend the line just a bit towards the master, and even then there's no guarantee that I'll get a good flare again, since the line has already been disturbed so much. I've noticed that my flares will fuck up if I try to flare a section that my bar tool has already clamped down on, or if the section of line to be clamped isn't perfectly straight.
I know there are those fancy hydraulic tools that are apparently the bees knees to use, but I don't feel like forking out 200-300 bucks for one that I'll probably never use again.

I honestly dont know why youre struggling so much.
I did a complete stainless line build that included some extra pieces (did a flex line to extended radius arm, ran solid down the radius arm then flex to the spindle) and i didn't have a single flair leak, didn't have to redo anything.
And yes, I used a cheap bar clamp style.
That was awhile ago and maybe "cheap" 20 years ago is "top of the line" today.
But its a simple technique and all I can think of is that its not you, its the tools.

I dunno, maybe it is me. When I initially did the steel lines, some of them kept leaking and right now only one line (the one going from the distribution block to the front left wheel) was the one that seemed to not leak lol. A real head scratcher because while some others were lopsided, other flares still looked perfect.
I took a look at the inverted flare on the master and it seems like that might be contributing to the problem, the hole doesn't seem to be perfectly centered.

Can /ccg/ help me find my forever car? What would you suggest I start looking for?
I'm starting to work on my long term plan to put together the car that I will attempt to keep alive for the rest of my life. I've owned and daily'd old cars (and bikes) for most of my life including a J60 Land Cruiser and a Mercedes R107 - because they were cool and cheap, and I was poor and had time to wrench. My current car is modern-slop but I see the writing on the wall - once it reaches its end of life, I do not want to buy the shit the market it putting out now.
Instead, I want to buy something simple and old school that I can just keep going forever. I'm not a "classic car guy" and don't have an extensive or deep knowledge of classic car models and history, so I don't really know where to start. This is where you all come in.
>Classic 3-box design sedan, or maybe SUV. I could maybe make a coupe work with a sufficiently spacious back seat.
>Well engineered and solid design.
>Lends itself well to high quality new suspension and driveline components.
>Lends itself well to extensive sound insulation treatment and other comfort / quality of life modifications.
>Ubiquitous and available parts and replacements.
>Compatible or easily convertible (without substantial custom fabrication) to "modern" crate motors.
>Fun and satisfying to drive, comfortable for road trips, enough space to be used as a grocery getter and general daily transportation.
>Wont disintegrate on contact with rough roads.
You might say I should never had sold my FJ60, and you're probably right. I was young, dumb, and poor. I've also developed a taste for sedans but could go back to a utility body if that was really the best choice - I just find sedans/coupes more satisfying to drive than trucks and SUVs.
I initially thought "cars I can drop an LS into" and that led me into various GM A/F/G/X body models. What else should I be looking at?

my 89 cressida fit this. although the back seats can't be folded down to gain access to the trunk. very quiet inside with all the windows up, yet you could still hear the engine very clearly. manual swap made it insanely fun. extremely straightforward, grab the gearbox and front half of prop shaft from an a70 non turbo supra.
most complex part was splicing in wires to the factory neutral start switch to get the reverse lights to work.
drawbacks would be lack of interior bits - find an example that has the best body shape. mechanicals can be fixed fairly easily since these shared the same engines as the a70 supras. suspension parts can still be got off rockauto, although from memory one of the control arm ball joints or bushings you can't seem to get replacements for, at least stock ones. much of the suspension aftermarket is geared towards turning these into drift missiles.
infamous undertorqued head gasket issue with the stock engine but once that's fixed, it's extremely reliable

Very nice cars. My only concern with cars from that era is the extensive use of plastic in the dash and interior which gets dried out and cracks and there's really not much you can do about it. Even my '84 380SL had this problem to some extent - particularly with the trim pieces around the seat hinges.
Upholstery I'm not worried about, I figure whatever I buy will need a full upholstery job either right away or eventually. It's the stuff I can't easily replace or repair that I'm most concerned with. I'm also worried that those engines will be harder to find and overpriced but maybe not.
I'll keep an eye on those - thanks for the suggestion.

Very cool. Hadn't seen these. I also like the look of Darts and Valiants.
>mild big block
My initial thoughts were definitely that sticking with extremely popular V8 platforms would be the way to go. They'll offer the most availability of both original spec and aftermarket parts, compatible transmissions, bolt-in swap kits, etc etc etc. Maybe I'm overlooking something though?
If I do end up building a motor out, I'll definitely be going for a low stress, mild tune that prioritizes mid-range torque. Paired with a nice quiet exhaust and whatever the nicest suspension and brakes I can get for it without turning it into a rock hard ride. I'm not afraid of carbs, but I was thinking that something with a user-programmable EFI setup would be ideal for the long run. This will definitely be a long term labor of love.
I'm basically looking for the car equivalent of the 1992 ST1100 I'm restoring right now.
>>28692296
>maybe I'm overlooking something
If you already had a horde of parts, I would say go for it because anything big block is just going to cost more.
Darts/Valiants/Scamps/Dusters/Demons are pretty cool and are great midsize cars. They handle pretty decent and have a solid aftermarket. They're not too expensive either.

I definitely do not have any parts or anything sitting around. I'll be starting from scratch, and I don't really want to have to fill a garage with spares or my yard with donor cars if I can help it.
I suppose I'd been imagining a small block V8 of some variety because it seems like that would be more aligned with the sorts of mid-sized cars I'm envisioning. Had a Grand Marquis and an LTD Crown Vic as well at various times and while I loved driving those cars (especially the Vic) the size was at times pretty cumbersome.
Am I on the right track here thinking some kind of mid-size with a small block fits what I'm looking for? Once I narrow down a list of models, I'll just start some search alerts and start keeping an eye out for a really good body + frame as a starting point.

my car's dash held up to the aussie sun very well (it's that padded leatherette sort of material), but really with anything, it's usually better to find something with an immaculate body and interior, but shitty mechanicals because most of the time the mechanicals have replacements readily available. this is especially the case for jap cars because most of the time they're not like burgers where you can still get a brand spanking new dash etc. for older cars simply due to the humongous aftermarket.
if you're concerned about plastic damage really the best thing is to keep it in a garage, rather than parking it on the driveway for example. even a carport will negate a lot of uv damage. otherwise get something like 303 protectant spray and give the dash plastics a wipe down every now and then.
mopars are very nice, but the mopar tax is real, especially with parts. expect to see people ask fantastically retarded prices for new old stock oem stuff. even old rubber shit which would only be suited for a flatbed queen commands a premium.
>>28692261
i took another look at it thinking to do what you and the other anon said and it seems that im my frustration, was mistaken - the sealing surface on the tube seems to be intact, but i think the inverted flare on the master side actually had the hole drilled slightly off center. i should've taken a pic.
i said fuck it and ordered one flare gasket via an ebay listing because i was really hoping to get the front wheels back on. i alao asked one of the cool boomers on a mopar forum to see if he could buy and send me a pack of 10 via a letter envelope or something to keep the shipping costs down, wanted to have spares just in case.
>>28692332
>Am I on the right track here thinking some kind of mid-size with a small block fits what I'm looking for?
I think so. Any of the Big Three will do (Ford, Chebby, MOPAR). LS swaps or a Vortec gen 350(1996-2003), Roller 5.0 or 351 (1992/1993ish), Magnum 360 (1993-2003), something nice from Blueprint engines would be great. A transmission with overdrive should be on your list of considerations. If I were starting a long term project, I would get the cleanest and closest to original example that the budget allows for. Preferably with the running gear you want (engine, trans, rear end)

get the carb cheater - in a nutshell, it's a metered vacuum leak that allows the carb to react to the constantly changing environment that driving around will see. for it's price it's actually a lot of bang for your buck - you get a vacuum gauge, afr gauge and data logger, plus a few other things aside from the main feature of the carb cheater.
the neat thing is that if the carb cheater breaks for whatever reason, the carb still works

unironically this, it's how i got the motivation to get my car up and running again, and aside from waiting on parts, it's let me make huge leaps in progress

So I've been doing some research based on the responses I got yesterday and have put together a pretty big list of models to start paring down.
Ford/Mercury
Chevy/Pontiac/Buick/Oldsmobile
Dodge/Plymouth
I saw a couple of anons refer to the "MOPAR tax" - is that a real consideration? Are MOPAR classics considered more desireable or are inflated in price in some way, and that extends to parts and such?
One model in particular I found myself drawn to is the Ford Fairmont/Mercury Zephyr. Do you guys think that might be a good basis for what I'm trying to accomplish here? I just love how... plain they look. Many of the late 60s/early 70s cars have quite a bit of "flair" to the design and it's very cool, but I like the idea of something very understated. My only concern is that it doesn't look like these were made for very long - just 5 years or so, so I don't know how easy small parts will be to find. The engine and transmission on the other hand should be SUPER easy to maintain and source.
I found a very clean '78 Zephyr that really fits a lot of what I'm looking for. The only issue is it's got an automatic in it, and I have no idea how difficult it would be to convert to a manual (eventually, once the current transmission lived its life). Thoughts?

>Mopar tax
Dodge had lower sales than Ford/GM so less examples survived.
They also had a smaller list of desirable models. Then the few "good" models are highly sought after.
So for 1969 people look for Chargers/Challengers almost exclusively.
About 100,000 challengers were made vs 300,000 mustangs.
Ford fans can go for the Mustang, Fairlane, Torino, Galaxie, Thunderbird...
Yes people still restore darts and coronets but theres usually a reason (personal memory or they couldnt get a charger)

That makes sense. I had actually figured I would benefit from the fact that I'm looking for models that are likely less desireable, although the tradeoff might be that fewer were preserved because nobody cared.

78 zephyrs did have an option for a 3 speed floor shifter manual. maybe a yard might have the parts you need, otherwise might need to fab stuff up.
dunno how they handled clutch actuation (e.g. hydraulic or cable operated) but I'd personally go for hydraulic with external slave for ease of serviceability and driving, cable operated clutches are apparently quite heavy.

>Ford Fairmont/Mercury Zephyr.
I think those would be perfect. A manual swap shouldn't be too hard. A T5 would be the cheaper option, but a TKX would be premium. I wonder if a clutch pedal assembly from a regular foxbody mustang would fit seeing as how the fairmont and zephyr are also foxbodies.
Unless you already love MOPARs, I would just go Chevy or Ford.

Pulled tank and drained it. Dug out the anal probe and checked inside- remarkably clean for its age, no rust, still painted.
Tank is back in.

they do but it'd be much simpler to just remove your pedal box and just add a third pedal.
all you are doing is adding a pipe spacer that goes across and a key at the end of the shaft to fit the clutch cable quadrant onto.
I accidentally got a sn95 box once and just grafted it onto my old box because they don't swap without changing the booster bolt pattern I think.

I've been looking at Fairmonts & Zephyrs. Most of the ones I've found have been autos, so I'll probably have to convert.
Besides the nice '78 I found (Windsor 302 with an EFI conversion), there's an '81 with the 3.3L I6. If I can swap the pedal box out with one that supports a clutch from a same year Mustang or something that sounds easy. They both run and drive so I figure I'll just drive them how they come until I decide to rebuild the engine and I can install the manual at the same time.
Any suggestions for transmission?

idk, cheapest and fastest thing will be a sn95 t5 but it'll move the shifter back and won't be able to use the speedo and you have to pair the bellhousing.
finding a bellhousing and flywheel for the 200ci will be alot of trouble, I have done it and swapped a sr4 4 speed behind mine but I wouldn't do it again unless I had a free t5.

Went through two gaskets because they fell out of place while I was cranking down on the nut, but third time's a charm. Stomped the pedal multiple times and pushed it as hard into the floor as I could and held it there for 30 secs...no leaks whatsoever. Brakes are complete...finally.

you see them at drag strips all the time still wearing boring old cow-shit green and beige paint but will have big blocks, 5.3s or 351ws swapped in and often enough with turbos.
I don't really like the sleeper trend I just like that they're compacts which means it costs less money to make them as fast as a mid or fullsize car.

There's no vapor recovery or vent system. Just goes tank>fuel pump>carb.
Cap takes care of expansion venting so it probably just pulled atmosphere moisture.

I'm definitely interested but it's not "the one". I'm not in love with either the exterior or interior color, and am not thrilled that he scrapped the original parts. I do like that it has a factory 302, it has the cleanest body I've found - no dents or rust that I can see at all in any of the pics, and is has the optional bucket seats which is a plus as well.
It's just the best example I've been able to track down. Others all have rust, body damage, trashed interiors, or some combination of the three.
Theres one other I'm tracking - it has a truly hideous paint color, but a better interior color. It has one small dent in the passenger side fender, no visible rust. I has the 6cyl though.

It would probably be worth it just to have it pull air from somewhere besides the side of the truck.
I was serious about the weather. It can be 90° and with the in-cab tank its probably 110°+ so of course its expanding and venting. Then a storm comes through, temps drop while it's raining and the cap opens up and starts pulling atmosphere.
This is the view the rain clouds have. This is the only atmospheric opening in the system.
Hell id be happy with some BS 70s smog charcoal canister.

>take it from someone who has owned 3 to just pony up and get a Volvo 240
What made you buy, and then sell, three different ones? What did you end up with?
The Volvo is cool but a bit outside what I was originally looking for in terms of parts availability and such. As a burger, American cars do have something of a home field advantage.
Since you seem to have some experience with these - any important differences to be aware of between the 1978 and 1981 models? There are two that I'm looking at.
>1978
>Factory Windsor 302
>Seller is kind of a shitlord
>Has an ACES EFI kit, owner dropped it 1/2 inch with springs, and it has a solid rear axle that I'd have to swap.
>~100k original miles
>1981
>Factory 200ci Six
>Auction
>~25k original miles
>Minor body damage on one panel.
No matter what I buy - I will eventually want it to have a Windsor 302 in it, so I'm not sure how much more annoying and expensive it would be to swap the 6cyl one (A/C compressor, etc all look different).
I've also been looking at AMC Eagles but again, I'm worried about parts availability in the long run.

i looked it up and the reason for the BVSV is to reduce the chance of the engine choking when cold from the fuel vapour coming in. If your engine is fine then there's probably nothing you need to do, but seems like if you want to go that bit further, you could plumb in a thermal vacuum valve/switch, thankfully this is plentiful on rockauto across various makes and models.

I'm sure he's beat on it some but it can't be too much because he's owned it less than a year. I was able to track the specific car down and it was pulled out of a storage unit in 2024, cleaned up and made to run, put up for auction, and sold to a dealer - where the current owner bought it from. He did the EFI install, put the 8.8 welded rear in, and put wheels on it. Then lost interest and decided to sell it.
