Some prefer log books, for just the sort of reason in the op, and go to great lengths to stay on them. There was an exemption for older trucks that didn't have an engine management system for an ELD to plug into, and likewise for new chassis that had an older engine installed and people spent lots of money (six figures, easy) to conform to such exemptions. I think the old engine/new chassis (a "glider") exemption has been closed to new builds now but the existing ones are grandfathered of course and so will be around, and increasingly valuable, for decades.

You legitimately don't need a hazmat endorsement for quite a few hazmat loads if they're packed and loaded correctly. I did the same thing and freaked out over a load of car batteries that I picked up before dispatch told me it was kosher and I looked it up during the call before I agreed to run it again after that. It's a loophole because all drivers have to take ELDT training which has a section on hazmat in it so the expectation is you know what you're doing even if your cdl class took the eldt test open book in groups and literally everyone got a 100 on it even though hardly any of you actually know what the fuck you're doing.
You can run it without an endorsement no problem. Doesn't even need placards and in fact you shouldn't put them on the trailer if it's exempt because if it's exempt you can take routes that normally don't allow hazmat. Funnily enough when it crosses the border to Mexico or Canada it will require those placards and whoever is hauling it to have a hazmat endorsement. It's yet another reason why getting a hazmat endorsement isn't worth it unless you have a guaranteed six figures after taxes job lined up that requires it.

I will stop at a safe haven and use a toilet. More is involved in shitting, so it’s impractical to do it anywhere outside a bathroom or portable toilet.
Pissing in your cab is only done in emergencies, when you do not have access to a toilet and pissing outside is ill-advised if there are security cameras or other people nearby. Most of you wouldn't have made it the first week when I started driving, I had to use an atlas and call all my shippers and receivers for directions, I wasn't allowed to use Google or Maps I couldn't use GPS and I had to write all the directions (TL first street, TR 4th avenue, TL I-81 etc.) on Post-It notes and stick them to my windshield for two months. My trainer was old school and started driving officially in the 80s and unofficially on his dad's farm in the 70s. I have a perfect record because of him.
Now that I'm done roasting you retards, I'll tell you some secrets your trainers and instructors didn't tell you. Don't eat anything heavy within 3 hours of parking unless you're at a truck stop and even then, you probably still shouldn't. Don't overnight at a shipper that doesn't have a bathroom. Don't drink tea or any other diuretic within two hours of stopping for the night unless you want to be pissing every two hours.
Eat some fucking fiber and drink water, it helps bind your dookie so you're not immediately rapid-fire full-auto shitting brown water after eating roller dogs, I don't have a gall bladder or appendix so I had to learn this like 20 years ago. I'm vegan so there's a lot of shit I miss the boat on that you guys don't, but eating more greens is better for your GI than most of the processed crap truck stops sell.

If I know I'm going to be heading into a large blue liberal Democrat population center and spending some time there, most of the time they never have truck stops because truckers are all Republicans and fuck them, get all your peeing and shit done outside of the city so you're not stuck in traffic having to shit or pee or something, most of the truck stops are outside of the city. Call ahead and figure out what the shipper/receiver has. Plan ahead people. I've never had to park on an off ramp/on ramp.
TA has a points program called UltraCredits and if you do enough business with them you can use the UltraCredits for paid parking, yes even in the ones outside of largely black population centers where they are installing gates and converting the entire lot to paid like Cartersville GA, you can use UltraCredits to reserve parking long before you get there and just show the clerk your reservation and you're straight, they scan your card so when you leave in the morning you don't have to pay money.

I have never shit in my truck and never will. I have a bucket with a roll of trash bags, a bag of wood shavings, and some wet wipes in it for emergencies. Line the bucket with a bag, add some wood shavings, shit, cover the shit with more wood shavings, tie it off, double bag it and tie it off, then throw it in a dumpster. I do the act under the trailer on atop the rail between the cab and trailer. I've used it 3 times in 10 years of trucking, once at a sysco when their bathroom was out of order and I had been there for 8 hours, the other two times caught on i40 after an ice storm closed the interstate. Anyone who shits IN THE TRUCK is a fucking animal.
I use a piss jug because insomnia. Getting up, getting dressed, walking across the parking lot, pissing in the truck stop then walking back was ruining my sleep schedule and killing me. I got a def jug as a designated piss container and my sleep improved dramatically. I drive regional and go home every weekend, I take it with me and rinse it out with a garden hose, fill it up halfway with a splash of bleach and dump it before I get back in the truck to keep it from stinking.

I wouldn't worry about a crummy 160lbs. Most of the time those axles and tires are rated 12500 anyway. The tires, at least, will say that they're rated for 6250lbs each at 110psi on the sidewall. For the axle's rating you'll no doubt have to get into the weeds on the truck's actual specs and no DOT pig is going to do that. They'll just cut you a ticket for something chafing/leaking instead. Much easier.

The customer service is dogshit. Property owner never responded to messages so I called CS. Customer service had me send them photo and video evidence showing that the lot was actually full. Then they call me back 2 hours later with “Sorry, but we just spoke to the property owner and he told us that there is space to park”. Take things slow, GOAL, do your pretrips etc etc. Common sense shit. Dont push it with speed, DOT hunts us like dogs. Don't solely rely on truck GPS, use a road atlas and google maps to check for clearances or restrictions, ESPECIALLY first and last few miles. Finally, allot at least an hour to find parking at the end of the day, and try to maintain a consistent schedule as much as you can. You don't want to be one of those bozos sleeping on the on-ramps. I personally prefer to start between 0200-0400 and end around 1500. Plenty of parking left, even in cities, and you avoid the worst of traffic.

My hound is good. I got him when he was 6 weeks old, 8 years ago now. I picked him up in the truck and we have spent most of our time in a truck 5+ days at a time. Last 2 years we have been living in the truck and hotels and he doesn't mind. Gets a few miles of walks in a day and a piss every 4-6 hours. Arguably a better life than being caged for 10 hours in an apartment while someone goes to work. Go download My US Trucking Skills. It's free and it's in both app stores. Go to CDL Practice Levels>Alley Dock>53 Foot Trailer>Level 1. Spam this level until you can get it done as quickly as possible. My highscore is 681. The tandems are set in the california hole which is honestly where you should be putting them if not further forward unless you can't to be legal on weight. If you can get three stars on that on drivers side, you can do it blindside, the setup is literally the same as is the formula. Most of the time I can nail a 45 degree alleydock on either side without having to GOAL although if I'm exhausted or it's particularly tight because jeets and joggers can't park right I'll adjust my mirrors to get a better view.
Obviously if you have to GOAL then fucking do it because even if you take ten minutes and have to get out and look a dozen times and use half a dozen pullups that's better than hitting shit. But to be quite honest with you senpai it shouldn't be necessary the majority of the time unless you're in a lot that's tighter than dicks hatband trying to park between two shitskins that couldn't keep a crayon between the lines in a coloring book.

drivers on a regular basis. I’m not sure if that’s accurate for every distribution center with a transportation office, but at least two of the DCs I’ve been to were either grilling something or placing buffet trays on the table, or were discussing plans to throw a party later that week.
There seems to be more Walmart DCs in a state than there are terminals for any other carrier, so if you’re someone who really wants access to a hot shower without having to paying for one, on the road, Walmart will have you covered because every Walmart DC with a transportation office will have showers for their fleet drivers – other drivers are forbidden to use them.

No jakes on snow and ice. Braking in the middle of the truck like that can cause the drives to step out and you'll likely jackknife it.
Colorado isn't fooling when Chain Law is out. The weather and road may look great where you are and go to shit within a mile. Chain up where they say to or, better yet, park it.
Don't pop the trailer brakes when you stop. They'll be wet and the shoes will freeze to ther drum and you'll have hell in the morning getting them free. This is where a lot of those flat-spotted trailer tires come from. An alternative is to drag the trailer brakes using the trolley bar for a lap or two of the truck stop before parking so that the get good and hot and any moisture evaporates off due to the heat. Doesn't always work but better than not. Even then always check that all wheels are turning before getting out on the road.
Live by the weather reports of the route you're planning on. Southern route isn't always best. There are times I-80 will be good but I-70's getting shit on at the passes. Same with I-70/I-40. Flagstaff can be a problem at 7000ft.
As always have plenty of food, shit to keep you warm, CB because you might not always have cell service, and entertainments not reliant upon cell service because it might just happen that you're stuck for a couple days.

I'd personally, if possible, drive the truck in manual mode in slick conditions. The auto has done some fuckfuck shit to me in the past and I've only barely avoided getting stuck.
Also I've never personally used this trick but a lotta oldheads swear by it, carry a spray bottle full of wiper fluid or antifreeze (most are less likely to complain about the wiper fluid puddle) to spray on your brakes if theyre frozen. Fucking hate these wiper settings on these trucks – they don’t turn on when you want them to. There’s 3 redundant intermittent settings, then there’s one proper intermittent setting that goes off every other second so it allows you to not have the wipers on fully, but it’s enough to clear up any dense drizzling; then there’s the first full setting that sometimes comes on and sometimes becomes intermittent, which will prompt me to select the next setting, which ends up being the fast setting that is only necessary for downpours.

Not a trucker but if you can pick your days off Sun/Mon is always the best. You get your Saturday night, can watch football if you want on Sunday, and everything is open on Monday if you need to run errands. You'll never hit 60mph as an average. Best will be in the mid 50's on driving days. IME with OTR what you'll have are driving days and load days. Generally, it was Unload on Monday morning and get loaded on Monday afternoon. Now your clock is shot to hell so you won't get far that day. Tuesday tended to be a driving day where you could use most of your clock driving with Wednesday being another Load day. Thursday driving, and Load for Friday. You'd get a longer run for over the weekend for delivery on Monday. And that's if everything went like clockwork, which it rarely did. Frequently there'd be a fuckup with either a shipper or receiver which would delay you into the next day for loading or unloading and that would screw up the the whole next week too.
tldtr; you won't be driving anywhere near what they would have you believe and why cpm is for suckers (aka newbs and rookies)
