what is a DDable sports car if I don't want to overpay for a porsche?
I'm thinking something like a 2018-19 elise or a similarly priced mk5 supra, both have Toyota™ seal of approval so I'm sure they wouldn't be hard pressed to do a measly 15 to 20k kilometers a year, but the supra screams for attention and I'd prefer smth a bit more understated. I can get a brand new GR Yaris for the price but I can't stand the revamped interior and I don't want to go for the weaker older model

I dont sell my cars or guns ever so don't particularly care about resale value or deprecation or appreciation or any of that gay redditor arab bullcrap, these cars will rust away to nothingness before I sell them sonny

Lotus made an incredible car, but the spartan interior and glued together chassis doesn't really lend itself to a car that will have a lot of miles put on it.

A car being a "touring" has nothing to do with performance, enthusiasm, professionalism, or lack of it. It's just space plus a minimum of comfort for long distance driving. Ever wonder why some wagons are called Touring or Tourer? Now you know.

The cars to ever be called sports cars were all called touring cars or roadsters prior to the 1920's when the term was coined. The classic archetype avant la lettre being the Mercedes Simplex 60 hp, which was described at the time of 1903 as 'a fast touring car'.
So the historical etymology of sports car is a high performance road going touring car for amateur enthusiast enjoyment.

Anonymous No.28670805 [Report] >>28670819 >>28670820

Touring means traveling. A touring car is a car made for traveling. A fast touring car is a fast touring car, or maybe a grand touring car. Whether the term sports car was used to mean fast touring car 100 years ago or not is largely irrelevant today as their standards for what constituted fast or indeed a car made for traveling are so far detached from our own that any comparison is pointless. Especially considering many cars that people today would call sports cars are the diametrical opposite of a car made for long distance travel with passengers and luggage (eg Lotus Elise). At any rate, many of these definitions have been abused by automakers because they became associated with desirable vehicles so nowadays you will find the "sport" or "gt" moniker slapped onto just about anything.
Anonymous No.28670819 [Report]
>>28670805
Anyway while I'm here I'll offer my definition of all these terms and the way in which they differ from each other:
Touring/tourer
>car made for long distance travel with a passengers and luggage
>a minimum amount of comfort for long hours driving
>no real definition of how much space is enough space, nowadays mostly used for wagons
Grand touring/tourer
>car made for long distance driving in absolute comfort
>typically a sedan, usually on the big side
>comfortable and highly adjustable seats you can sit on for hours
>soft suspension, high profile tires with lots of sidewall, the objective is to isolate the driver as much as possible from road irregularities
>lots of noise isolation
>lots of leg room
>every luxury gizmo available at the time
>almost always auto transmission for comfort
>big powerful engines, with the goal of being able to travel at high sustained speeds with minimal engine noise and vibration
Sports car
>car made for visceral, high speed driving
>as small as possible, traditionally a coupe
>bucket seats that are not very adjustable, not very comfortable, made to hold you in place during high lateral g maneuvers rather than long hours of driving
>stiff suspension, low profile wheels, lets the driver feel every tiny bump on the road
>usually not a lot of noise isolation
>tiny cramped interior
>typically spartan in terms of optional luxury features
>used to be always manual as it was faster, nowadays auto trannies are faster but a lot of people still go for manuals as an engaging and visceral driving experience is the end goal
>(not necessarily big) powerful engines and gearing aimed at offering an optimal mix of acceleration and top speed for fast driving in different road layouts
>some of the more pure cars of this class will have things like lightweight flywheels that make them absolutely miserable to daily drive
Anonymous No.28670820 [Report]
>>28670805
The primary - if not only - factor in the standard was faster than regular traffic. Was the same then, is the same now, will be the same in the future.
The secondary factor being not radically divorced in form from regular traffic, either. It is a road going car that can do things for you that other road going cars on the road do, but tuned up. 'Sportier', you might even say.
Hence, high performance road going touring car for amateur enthusiast enjoyment. That is what a sports car is.

the main thing you want is a car that is not horrible to drive on a day by day basis
