Carrying even groceries is a hassle on a bike, especially if you need to buy anything bigger than groceries.
Commuting in the rain gets tedious, especially when you wake up at 5 in the morning, it's pouring and you have to be at work for 6.
You arrive completely soaked and have to suffer the rest of the day in soaked clothes.
Or if you're "playing it smart" then you have a change of work clothes at work, you'll have to rip that clammy shit back on when you leave work.

just buy a reliable 20 year old beater but make sure you do a basic checkup for common mistakes, open the oil cap to make sure its not mayo in there, etc.
ive always owned 20+ year old cars and even if they lasted me 5 years its way more affordable than buying a brand new car. You spend 2-3k, then 500 bucks on basic fixes and then they're good for a decade or more if you didnt massively fuck up

Need some help. My friend and I are going to an ADV Rally around Thanksgiving. I'm not sure what to buy for footwear. My regular riding shoes won't cut it, but I don't know if I should spend almost $300 on some ADV Boots, or my local powersports dealer has some of these Moose dirt bike boots for $80. I'd think the cheap dirt bike boots would do the trick over something more expensive and stylish, and I don't really care about how I look on me on my V-Strom 650 for a 2 day trip.
I just don't know if cheap dirt bike boots are actually any good or if ADV boots are truly better for trial riding and aren't just more expensive for their looks. I just don't want to break my ankle because I fell over in a rut.

Those cheaper 3/4th "touring" helmets all seem to have the visor act like a whistle above 50mph. I got my dad one of the cheap Bilt ones and it does that. He only uses the visor at lower speeds or in rain. Really annoying because his headset picks it up too.

Torn between a 22 Tracer 9 GT and a 24 MT09 SP (the new one)

My riding is like 70% commuting (40km each way, 50/50 highway/backroads), and 30% twisties/weekend cruises. Maybe once a year a 2-3 day long trip. No pillion but hoping I can convince my wife in the future to atleast try.
Coming from a striple. Afraid the tracer will be porky, and afraid the MT won't be much more comfortable than the Striple (my back hurt a bit after an hour, and it had rearsets that weren't generous for my knee)

Blog post incoming. I'm sorry.
My brother is in rehab with a brain injury from a motorcycle accident. He can't walk or speak yet, and I haven't visited him since he woke up. The reasons for this are entirely selfish. We had a falling out maybe five years ago over some stupid stuff, but I also really don't want to reconnect with the rest of my family as a byproduct of showing up to visit him. I just don't want to deal with that. He has a large support structure without me. Otherwise, I would have already been visiting. I know I'm just being a baby, but what would you guys do?

care facilities still have retarded visitation policies since covid, so you actually have to coordinate seeing people, unless you want to seem like a selfish faggot

The extra money = less torsion damage, which is what actually fucks you up when you go down, even more when bike is over your leg and helping on the twist against the ground.
Also make sure to practice with boots since they are quite stiff, and the more expensive, the stiffer they will be, so it might even go to the point you will want to adjust the foot levers for both the gear switch and rear brake. With MX boots on you will make more of a motion from the knee than from your ankle, so you got to get used to it during break in period.

you always want some slack on the chain. make sure it still has room to flex a little bit even after compressing the suspension. just put your belly and weight on the seat while you check slack with your left hand or ask somebody to sit on the bike while you check chain tension. a chain must never be too tight or you could not only damage the chain but also sprockets and even gearbox

Saw some videos about 390 ADV complaining that the transmission kit that comes with the bike that is pretty much shared with all the Dukes/RC is kinda shit, specially the chain since it stretches weirdly and tends to eat the teeth out of the sprockets a bit too quick, one guy was suggesting that once you run the bike past 4k miles you should change the chain if you're on a budget, but it was better to swap the entire transmission kit, while also getting a 14T front sprocket instead of 15T to keep the engine a bit more revved so you don't stall at low speed, usually occurs when you put first gear without giving it gas, also due of bikes being too lean.
Adding fuelX lite helps making the low rpm feel more refined, but I dunno if its that necessary for street bikes, since you are always on 4th gear at minimum.

Also don't cheap out on chains, get a decent D.I.D or similar as minimum, the "cheaper" chains that have O-rings on them will do, KTM 390s use a 520 btw.

Yeah I got an o-ring RK at 520, honestly it fit like a glove on the damn thing, thats why I don't get why its being a bit strange. The previous chain had very obvious slack at one section and then tight at another, I mean just watch that first video lol, it looked even worse IRL, but this new chain seems even all around.

Idk, I am wondering if its the transmission/gearing thats all fucked instead of the chain, because I can't see whats wrong with the chain. I'll see how it rides, I'm not too worried if its the transmission anyways, these bikes are so feking cheap that you can just buy another new one if something bad happens.

>Adding fuelX lite helps making the low rpm feel more refined
Thing is that I had it going to like half up the rev range while it was floating in that second video, it only acts strange when your in first/second gear at the bottom of the rev range, usually best to just give some clutch and rev it higher for slow speed stuff to give it a more smooth throttle.
Anonymous No.28668363 >>28668453

>The previous chain had very obvious slack at one section and then tight at another
And that's exactly why the stock chain is fucking garbage
>it only acts strange when your in first/second gear at the bottom of the rev range
Yep, that's why for the ones that get the ADV one is pretty much an essential to buy since you usually are on 3rd gear or below, the 14T sprocket just helps on getting that extra kick at low rev that the bike needs when in a pinch. Hell, it's even a bit hard to pull a wheelie on the Duke already, but on the ADV one is almost impossible without the sprocket change.

Also maybe you should look into getting a chain guide, but I don't know if the Duke has the ability to install one like the ADV does, that helped me quite a bit with the type of play you had on the 2nd video, its a bit more of a horizontal movement than a vertical one, but since it moves fast, it gives the impression that it moves kinda like an accordion.

In the future once I get my second bike I'll be turning this Duke into a stunt bike and I'll probably go 14 front and like 50 in the rear. Whats the reason for going down in the front vs up in the rear? I see more people just going up in the rear over changing the front.

>Hell, it's even a bit hard to pull a wheelie on the Duke already,
Naaaah, she comes up hard at low speed, once you see people doing whoolies on groms and scooters you realize its all technique. Well, unless you want to do them at fast speeds, you sure as shit aren't getting a wheel up in fourth with stock sprockets lol.

>maybe you should look into getting a chain guide
>its a bit more of a horizontal movement than a vertical one, but since it moves fast, it gives the impression that it moves kinda like an accordion.
Ahhh, I'll look into that then because its still a bit of a issue imo. I will say that it now runs so much better than before, but it was really bad with the midnight black oil and half slack half tight chain, so just about anything normal would feel amazing in comparison. The throttle and ride is so much more smooth now, so fekin nice.

Also I still need to replace the wheel dampeners and give that whole thing a nice greasing, plus my front brakes need new pads, both brakes should be bled, and finally do my valve adjustments. I'll leave all that for another day though lol.

This for example is the usual "go to" for old 6V Jupiters and Planetas. The Jupiter stayed mechanically relatively the same during the 6V era, parts generally can be swapped between generations with little to no issue, it was mostly just cylinder porting and bypass channels and such that differs between the models mechanically.
The Jupiter 2 had a nominal piston size of 61.75mm whereas the Jupiter 3 onwards used 62mm pistons. It's kinda rare to find used Jupiter 2 cylinders nowadays that are 61.75mm anymore as the pistons themselves are hard to come by, everyone just bored out to 62mm and used the newer style pistons.
There was some other thing that you couldn't use Jupiter 2 pistons in a Jupiter 3 engine due to the bypass channel design and the piston rings getting caught in them due to the piston ring stop nubs being in the wrong places, but I don't think you can even get Jupiter 2 pistons anymore as most you'll find nowadays are for Jupiter 4 and 5 engines anyway and they fit without any issues to the older style cylinders.
I think

All three were my fault. I will say, though, that the first two were in Okinawa, where the roads are made of coral and become unbelievably slippery when it rains. It's the prefecture's biggest infrastructure problem. I was inexperienced, I didn't really understand braking in turns yet. This recent one was just me being stupid though, I was at a stop sign and thought the road perpendicular to me was a one-way when it was a two-way, and I pulled out in front of a Harley.

All three accidents were low-speed, I don't even want to think about what could've happened if I crashed when I was really moving. I truthfully don't care about dying that much, I do care about permanent disability and/or not getting to fly though.

That was kind of my reasoning. A thought I've been having a lot lately is "Where does this end?" Not just with bikes, but with relationships, habits I have, etc. Am I really going to keep getting lucky and only wind up bruised if I keep riding for the rest of my life?

How unsafe are convertibles? I've been in a couple of rollovers in cars (both not my fault) and that's the first place my mind goes. I know they theoretically have those bars that pop up in the back, but in both of my rollovers, the airbags didn't even go off. I'm not sure how much faith I have in safety gizmos.

It is usually more advised to increase on the rear since you will increase the contact of the chain itself with the extra teeth, so you won't have to check your chain tension so often. Changing the front is just usually cheaper, ideally you will pick up a good front sprocket that has dampening on them to remove noise and vibration.
One front tooth sprocket less is almost a 1:1 to adding 3 teeth on the rear.
>>28668453
>I'll be turning this Duke into a stunt bike and I'll probably go 14 front and like 50 in the rear
Then you might as well buy a used DS or MX bike, those come usually with a 13T front and 50 at the rear. I just suggest you just buy the 50T rear if you are very keen on getting out the extra torque without fucking up your chain tension, you will sacrifice top speed if you change your ratio too much btw.

>>28668453
>Also I still need to replace the wheel dampeners
The Kawasaki dampeners seem to work great on KTMs, this guy with his 390 ADV had them replaced and felt the rear tire to be having a better behavior than with the stock dampeners, so that might help with that horizontal movement you got on the chain.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-DXXpfuXmM
>my front brakes need new pads, both brakes should be bled
Dunno about the brake pads though, those usually last quite a long time, so they might just need some treatment and thats it, unless you tend to keep the disc brakes red a lot of the time, I don't think you will have to change them just yet.

The main difference of an MX vs Track boot is that the MX boot is usually taller, so it will protect you almost from the knee down, and since these are longer your ankle won't have the strength to stretch the material enough to do a gear change like a track or a short boot does. ADV boots are able to do this, but they end up being complete shit in the end since they sacrifice the stiffness, hence the protection that is needed when injuries occur, specially with torsion.
The other big thing is the sole, track boots have a more defined profile on the heel and are completely smooth. MX type boots it can be somewhat different since you can replace the soles, and there are ones that are mostly completely smooth, and the other ones usually considered the "Enduro" sole, those have some extra pattern on them like an ADV boot, yet the main piece that can be replaced, its almost 1:1 with the MX one. MX boots are usually fully smooth since the rider will be on a dirt track exclusively, where as the Enduro will deal with actual elements, so having a completely smooth sole while needing to past & over rocks & boulders can lead to slippering, even more if rain is involved.

Luckily there's been some newer ADV boots that are finally doing shit right, they got pretty much all the features of an MX boot, yet the sole is much closer to a hiking boot. Sidi Adventure 2 and Leatt ADV 7.5 come to mind.

>Just how fucking immobile are your ankles in these? Is it hard to get used to them? Are they kinda as stiff as ski boots for example?

Depends of the model, usually it is the more expensive = more protection = more stiff.
During the break in period you will find them as stiff as ski boots, but over time they will get more comfy, besides you yourself more used to using them and doing the motion from the knee thing. Also practice standing up on the bike with them and changing gears + rear brake if possible, that can make the difference in staying on the trail vs eating dirt

>I think
I have Jupiter 3 engine with Jupiter 3 cylinders and they are 61,75 mm measured by local mechanic. It is also mentioned in the repair manual you posted in Table 6.

All the parts like piston pin locking springs were attached by some other mechanic in my engine and they were in place so I didn't dismantle and wash the engine before using. In this case, the other mechanic did drop a piston pin locking spring down to crank block. I know this because the engine stuck suddenly and the piston pin lock was found between the piston and the cylinder wall while there was all the parts still in place.

>If the gap between the piston and cylinder is more than 0,25-0,30 mm, the pair needs repairing.
Lmao so the originally designed way to bore the cylinder was to drive until the next oversize in the cylinder is achieved and then hone the cylinder for next size piston.
