I don't really understand the ratchet shifter thing. I get that they're designed so you basically just bump the shifter to get it to upshift and you can't pull or push it the other way to downshift, but surely it would have some sort of mechanical release or level that would allow you to just throw it into neutral right? Doesn't make sense to me that you'd have to come to a complete stop in top gear, then go to park (because it would break the parking pawl if you shifted into park at speed). Or am I fundamentally misunderstanding how they work?

Either way, shifting into park at speed and risking snapping the pawl or otherwise damaging the transmission but disengaging the engine from the wheels is still a far better alternative than destroying the entire car by crashing into someone and potentially killing the family you crash into. It's been years since this happened and I still think this guy is a gigantic retard.

They have a reverse and park lockout that has a manual override you need to push to put the car in either.
You absolutely 100% can downshift. It works like a sequential shifter but for an automatic. You pull back to go p, r, n, 1, 2, 3
Push forward to go 3, 2, 1, n, push lockout, r, p.
