Is this news now? It's been known for some time that the official emission figures are only reached if you manage to drive them almost exclusively on electric power (e.g. you charge the car every night and the battery's enough for your commute and shopping).
People mostly buy those things for tax benefits. Some Germans have probably never charged theirs.
Many of them are horribly inefficient as soon as the battery runs too low to move the vehicle, too. They're nowhere near as developed as hybrids as an old Prius or something, and often just have several hundred kilos of EV bits bolted onto an existing turbo gas engine + dual-clutch box. Most of those bits are dead weight with the battery empty.

I have had a Volt for two and a half years. In that time I have bought two tanks of gas.
Bare in mind it only has a 5 gallon tank, and its still 75% full.
These things are a fucken cheat code for free driving.
If i want to do a track day, i rent something from the track.
I have gone from spending hundreds a month on fuel, to like 20 in electricity.

Yeah, if you can drive just right, it might be the right kind of car for you.
Almost sounds like you could manage with a plain EV, but I suppose having the gasoline engine is handy if you need to do a longer trip without the hassle with charging occasionally.

The problem here is that Euro emissions tests are retarded and are absolutely being cheesed with these PHEVs. With lower emissions scores equaling lower tax in many countries, car makers are probably happy to make fat ass, overweight SUVs and sell them with low tax and high margins. Even to people whose driving habits are absolutely unsuitable for PHEVs to begin with.
Those company car drivers in particular probably just hoon like crazy from point A to point B, never even considering charging the things.

Ok so why didn't you just get an EV? Your gas is expiring in the tank and going to fuck up your engine. Sounds like you haven't traveled anywhere long distance in 2.5 years, so you could just consider renting a car when you need to do a long distance drive with the $1k a year you save in gas. Yeah, that's all people typically spend on gas if you do the math. Truckcucks may spend 2-3x that much but still $1-2k a year is all these people are saving, and an EV battery definitely loses more than $1-2k a year so in the long run they don't save shit.

You will not "save money" somehow with car ownership, the only way to save the most is to drive an old efficient shitbox that's cheap to register, insure, and can be written off as an expense eventually, or a motorcycle. The real hack is an E-bike. No gas, no expensive battery, no insurance, no registration, and can say fuck traffic and ride on sidewalks.
