Hello boards "4chan daily bike thread", I am here conducting, on behalf of Suzuki Motor Corporation, a survery for motorcyclists:

Would you willing to pay $5000 USD MSRP for a 180cc sized mini bike like a Honda Grom, made in Japan? Fuel injected, DOHC with air cooling and small auxiliary radiator for oil cooling, 5 speed transmission.

Got pic related for a test drive tomorrow.
I haven't ridden a motorcycle for over 16 years now but took some refresher classes (5x 45mins) on an SV650 over the last 2 weeks.

On the one hand I'm really excited because I'm looking to buy a bike after so long, on the other hand I have this vague fear in the back of my head, about crashing the bike during my test drive.
I'm no adrenaline junkie by any means and have driven cars daily for almost exactly 20 years now, but still...

A 4 cylinder engine is supposed to be more gentle and controlled than a 2 cylinder, right?

I haven't done any service to it or whatever other than tire changes, I get the OEM tires and swap them every 9k miles which is better than my friend's DR650 which needs new Jap tires every 3000 while im running 50 dollar chink tires and they last multiple trips cross the USA. how so? any of those go out, the bikes no longer safe to ride. if they were on separate fuses, you might not notice a brake light or turn signal going out until its too late, but youll sure a shit notice your instrument panel going out. if anything, its built in safety to put all critical functions onto one fuse. its double safe because even if you check your tail lights and turn signals pre-ride, your isntrument panel failing will notify you the second it happens, mid ride

I M H O as a N T A, there is a huge difference in the criticality of the brake lights, indicators, and instrument panel.

one goes out and I can at least limp it home, instrument panel goes out and I may not be able to limp it home depending on what goes out with it. Please, just put everything on its own fuse, make the fuse box bigger.

sure. if thats not a safety feature you want, thats fine, but to call it a flaw? not really. of course id personally want fuses for each thing, but from a safety and liability point of view, its a feature, not a flaw. from an engineering perspective as well. safer, WITH less components, with the bonus of being cheaper.

The dude whose girl wanted to sit on my bike really did not want her to sit on my bike, and to be honest I didn't want that either. I have returned and surprise, I didn't die, crash or even fall over. So even as a 172cm/5"6@78kg beginner-ish driver, the bike feels fine and very manageable. Don't be afraid of big numbers, 1000cc doesnt neccesarily mean it's an uncontrollable jet engine.
I rode a fairly new one too, only 29km on the clock.

Biggest difference to the 2cyl I've noticed, as expected, was how calm it runs. You can smooth cruise through town in 1st or 2nd gear if you like but also go far higher and ride on low rpm without ever having to be afraid of stalling.
Also liked how reactive and for lack of a better word "easy going" the steering is, super reactive and almost no force required at all. Feels very stable still, especially at lower speeds. Was a bit afraid of dropping it once when I stop-started into a right turn, but that's only because the bike is somewhat heavy (~210kg according to google).
The turn radius isn't wider than on other bikes either.
Still, I've dropped heavier bikes and was able to easily pop them back up in 3 seconds so if you're not a total lardass you should be too.

I tested rain mode first, everything is super throttled down, so your chances of accidentally accelerating into a tree in 1st gear because you slipped/whiskey throttled the gas are basically zero.
Then normal, which is... super normal.
On a stretch of unregulated yuro highway I tested the sports mode and was amazed at how much power the bike has available for you if you explictly try to make use of it. By that, I mean that you go into normal/sports mode and actively seek out the ~7500+ rpm range. From there on, you can just outright fucking to and overtake anything and everything. I went from 110 to 160km/h in the blink of an eye and wouldn't have noticed how fast I was actually going if I didn't have to literally clamp onto the bike.
Amazing, but I shat my pants a little so I left at the next exit.

What I did NOT like was how midly uncomfortable the seat is. The seat cushion, if you can even call it that, is super hard. Paired with the fact that the suspension is very tight and hard as well, going over bumpy stretches of road is no fun at all.
On my way back to the honda dealership I rode on a ~200m long cobblestone road and felt like the vibrations were trying to push my spine together by constantly having the bike transfer every bump unfiltered into my ass. Not a very fun experience, but I'm not going over miles of cobblestone every day so who cares.

Since I'm more on the short side the seating position felt very wide for me because the tank is extremely bulky. The entire bike is actually far far bigger and heaver when you see it in real life and sit on it, compared to the images and videos on youtube. With boots on I can reach the ground quite comfortably, somewhere in the middle between tiptoe and flat footed. There are options avaiable for even smaller seat cushions, but as I said before, the seat is hard enough as it is in my opinion.
Last thing I'd like to mention. yes, the exhaust is fucking ugly, but it doesn't sound half bad.
When I brought it back I caught 2 mechanics on cigarette break and asked them what it would cost to just fit an OEM honda quickshifter on the non-SP standard bike: 230€ + 30 mins, so under 300€.

I think if I can convince myself of buying the white non-SP standard hornet instead of the black SP, the hornet 1000 might be it. Sales guy told me it would be 9500€ with 6yr warrany, so I'll try to get him to throw the QS in there and go for it I guess.

Thanks for reading my blog.

It is bretty retarded to start off on a 1k, but at least ya got the rain mode, I would keep that on for a long time, Iass. Not because its too much to handle in sport, but because you'll be fighting the machine trying to learn shit. If you dwell in a parking lot and try to learn some drills or something, you're going to have to focus a lot more on just not having the throttle twist by accident and shoot inself into the nearest wall. Sometimes when I push myself to my limits I fuck up my body position and my wrist twists a bit extra, but that isn't enough to cause it to gain 20kmh instantly because its low CC. When it happens on your 1k, its going to scare the fuck out of you if you don't outright crash, and then you'll ride more scared, instead of pushing your limits again like you should be doing. Eventually you'll be like the other 1k riders who only open the throttle on the highways and straights.

But its all up to each man to live according to himself, lots of guys started on a 1k, few died/crashed hard, many live and still ride. Don't let the redditdads turn you off of it if you want to do it.

Also don't get a quickshifter, you never know if you want to get into dirt bikes and such, and you don't even change gears enough on a 1k to justify it. I mean what is your machine going to in first? 120kmh lol?

Not trying to be argumentative, but: why?
Honest answer please.

It's got the same weight and wheelbase as most other 600cc nakeds.
It just runs smoother on lower speeds and in order to make use of the 150bhp you'd have to rip the throttle like a fucking retard to get to the rpm required first.

This is what never appealed to me about big cars and bikes
I’m driving the thing with a manual because changing gears is fun and enjoyable
If I rarely have to change gears - and I have ridden these bikes on rental I’m not just talking out of my ass - then most of the time I might as well be on an automatic.
If I had the time or inclination to track these vehicles that would be one thing, but even ignoring the speed limit I don’t think I ever left third the last time I rode a liter bike, and the last fast car I rented was 911 which was pulling plenty at 90 in third. Three whole gears unused

I literally just told ya why, Iass.

Yes assuming in a magical world where you never get too cocky and start opening the throttle more and more, and you don't make a single mistake, then there is nothing wrong about starting on a 1k. I'm not even trying to convince you not to do it, I'm just saying, you'll learn slower on a bike like this, and you might even choose not to learn some things because the consequences for a mistake are way higher.

Theres a reason to get into an F1 car you have to grind your way through the lower models first, same with MotoGP. Unlike cars however, anyone can afford and hop on a 0-60mph 3 second monster with half the grip/tires and an inherently unstable platform. 99% of people on a 1k don't have the skill for one.

That's just me though, most people I've met that talk alot about riding high CC bikes are slowfags that don't even realize how much their bike is carrying them on its back, especially now with autoblipper+quickshift+slipper combo babby mode.

>>28675571
Yeah, if you like working gears, then 1k is a sorry ass bike to own. Isn't really much reason to swap gears anyways, "low revs" on a 1k is still a fucking rocket ship unless you are cruising at 60kmh in 4th gear like most of their riders do.

It would be neat to see a 1k with like 12 gears lol.

Not entirely discounting the power argument, but as I wrote earlier: I didn't even really feel the power.
People always make it out as something that just pounces on you while you're trying to ride your bike. One moment of distraction, one slightly mistimed downshift or pull of the throttle and BAM! you're at 8k and rocket into the nearest wall.
It just didn't feel like that and I'm anything but an experienced driver.
The worries over dropping it is legit the only thing that still nags at the back if my mind everytime I think about it. I've been looking at crash bars for that reason, because I'm not arrogant enough to think that I WOULDN'T drop it at one point.
Cost of riding... yeah well, it's a hobby and since I don't really spend my money on anything else... meh. It's an argument against the 1000cc and I can't discount it. I must arrange myself with it I guess.

>>28675571
Agreed, at least gears 5 and 6 will mostly go unused on my bike. I'm not insane enough to try how fast any bike can go on a highway, that's not appealing to me.
But as somebody who has privately driven manual cars for the last ~20 years and drives only automatics at work, I really do not fucking miss the constant shifting. Especially within city limits, it's just boring and tiring to me.
Experiences vary, of course.

Hell nah. I won't claim to be smart enough to understand why, but KTM somehow made their single deliver it's power like a street bike, but the torque at 2k rpm isn't where it should be. Plus, while the 690 has better service intervals compares to their 500, I don't think anyone would call it a low maintenance, destressed engine since it puts out what, 70hp?

Also, unrelated, but that's a 12k bike, which is pretty damn rough for a dual sport.
