>Aussies, what went wrong here?
You need protectionism for your free market if you wish to have a free market at all. Cons all over the world scream "COMMUNISM!!!!" if you as much as prevent an obvious shell company from buying up all of your industry, but you need someone who has the authority to simply rip the infinite foreign money out and say "No".
The Aussie car industry was extremely strong for the better part of 100 years, and it makes sense why. Shipping cars to Australia takes money, Australia has the industry already to make cars on their own, their market and its needs isn't the market and the needs of the rest of the Colonies, and shares more in common with America's car market. It made perfect sense to buy supply lines and licenses from American car companies and make them domestically. And then use this as a springboard to make your own car lines which would stimulate the economy and create cheap at-home car market
So of course government interests see this and they think "We can destroy this using foreign spending and sell off the scraps". So first Cons appeal every single market regulation that keeps foreign businesses from buying their industries wholesale, this was in the 80s. Then they repeal every single domestic assistance program that keeps the cars price-competitive with cars from overseas. Then, when all of Australia became 2 American car manufacturers, the Libs came into power and instituted every cuck European-style emissions standard in the book. This effectively took the Australian car industry out back and shot it, since there was no domestic factory that could meet those standards cheaply
.
Then bankers bought the scraps and sold what remained to China. Ain't the "Free market" grand?
Notice how even though the Cons and Libs pretend to disagree on everything, they still managed to agree wholesale on killing the 100 year old Australian car industry in only 30 years? Almost like there is no difference at all.
