Wut. Surely you mean those little circular washers that go on banjo fittings right? Should be able to get pic related (wrong size, they should have 3/16" on the same rack though) in a little plastic packet from a rack somewhere in Supercheap or Repco.

what really irks me is that EVs have excellent potential for their use case but the issue is that car manufacturers don't even know what that is, even though it's as clear as day. we're in the beginning/adoption stage of a new technology and naturally the results are often sloppy or misguided. i just want a somewhat lightweight and simple rear wheel drive EV with a moderately small battery that DOESN'T have an always-online connection to the internet. it shouldn't be this difficult to make an EV miata but we have to give it time... even if it will (most likely) result in sports EVs that are made exclusively for the wealthy upper class

How poor are we as a country now when most people can no longer afford Japanese cars, ironically the "more affordable" alternative historically? It's pretty stark when you see all the Yanks on /o/ posting their Challengers, M2s, Mustangs, and Corvettes. There was a brief period in time when Australia was just as wealthy if not better off than the USA.
Anonymous No.28691425 [Report] >>28691432

it's not that they can't afford japanese cars, it's that chinese cars are much cheaper for a similar level of quality
it's like when lexus brought out the LS400 - it wasn't as nice as an S-class but it was 90% of the way there but for 50% of the price and for a lot of people that's good enough
Anonymous No.28691432 [Report] >>28691453

>it's that chinese cars are much cheaper for a similar level of quality
They only have the illusion of being similar levels of quality though IMO. The interiors *look* similar to a more premium vehicle but they're always made of cheap and nasty plastics, seats are uncomfortable, and all the contact surfaces wear badly and look flogged after 50,000km.

That's not even mentioning the mechanical side of things which are very clearly nowhere near as good as even a low end Japanese vehicle. How many of those horrible little MG hatchbacks have you heard with a broken exhaust? I feel like every second one I hear has a busted weld somewhere.
Anonymous No.28691441 [Report] >>28691629

IMO they're great for city commutes, leave your real car at home and drive the e-cuckbox to work, someone smashes a trolley into it or urban yoof spraypaint dicks on it- doesn't matter.
Problem was they went for the 'range' and upper end of the market. City car, just put 150km range, make it cheap as fuck to the extent a 2nd hand corolla gets nervous and put all the basic i-cuck pads and trappings of civilization in there. Easy to park, cheap to run and no one wants to steal it. Instead we got overpriced, badly built, still too short-range and made of plastic trash for a premium.

Start at the bottom end, it just has to work and be cheap, no fucking expectations still has some market stake

Perceived safety net of free servicing for 1-2 years and warranty. Normies have an aversion to used cars because they got ripped off by some used dealership jew selling a lemon when they were younger. Also because they can't into maintenance or regular servicing intervals, so they put 40k kms on a lemon that was already at 90k and then wonder why 'suddenly' everything is breaking. Meanwhile they can buy a new car and never get it serviced in the first few years without any problems other than maybe tires.
Anonymous No.28692445 [Report] >>28692847

It's understandable because normies view cars as an appliance. They wouldn't buy a used tv/laptop/phone because it's going to break soon and won't have warranty, but they'll buy a new tv/laptop/phone because it least it'll last a few years and has warranty.

This one time I was looking for crush washers for some brake stuff, and I was going crazy trying to find the right ones. I was asking clerks for crush washers with these ridges in them. I only realized later that the ridges on the crush washers were from being crushed against the mating surfaces.

E36 owners will say they are reliable as a tractor or whatever
They are fairly reliable if every single hose and electrical connection etc is brand new
But being an old bmw owned by poorfags for the last 20 years it's guaranteed everything will fail in succession and you'll always be chasing down problems
Apparently parts availability is really bad too, many oem parts are no longer being produced so all you have is chinese manufactured shit or overpriced used parts
Anonymous No.28692884 [Report] >>28692893
>>28692869
Reliability is pretty good, they are pretty basic cars and are from the BMW era of the 3 Series being their bread and butter model. The thing you'll notice on literally every single one is the glovebox sagging, which seems to happen to all of them, but you can fix it pretty easy. The interior overall is pretty good but you'll definitely have that glovebox issue and maybe something like the leather/cloth peeling off of the door cards due to the old glue giving out. You can honestly DIY pretty much all the interior fixes you need, the vinyl in them is pretty good quality.

My experience with a VANOS model was pretty alright, I don't really recall if I dealt with any valve adjustments. My friend was a BMW tech and would help out with servicing sometimes so he'd of known best back then if it needed it or not.

Parts availability is mixed due to the age of it but there's a pretty decent after market for it now. Stick to OEM if you can or something recommended by a BMW forum if it's NLA.

>They are fairly reliable if every single hose and electrical connection etc is brand new
The E36 really doesn't have that much tech on board, they are extremely basic. All the computer tech they really had was some really basic OBC (or a simple clock if low spec) and that's about it. No other fancy assists or features of any kind.

and are they even worth it as an enthusiasts car or its just beamer hype?
Anonymous No.28692897 [Report] >>28692914

Don't buy one that was owned by a retard. That's my rule for any car, BMW or Toyota, you don't want that kind of unknown bullshit unless you plan on doing some proper wrenching and are completely comfortable with wrenching.

If you get one from an owner that gave a shit, chances are that it'll be very well maintained and probably have OEM parts wherever possible. BMWs tend to have just two kinds of owner:
>retard that uses chinesium parts, gay mods and runs it into the ground
>autistic and anxious owner that will fix every little thing and use only high quality parts

They're genuinely pretty fun cars to drive. The coupe is the best of the bunch for sure, but the sedans are also pretty alright if that's all you can find.

it's not all bad. i got two pretty decent momentary switches, one for high beam and the other for the windscreen washer. it actually had tin plated copper wiring on the connectors which was a pleasant surprise, and all the terminals were perfectly crimped too. it wasn't ridiculously cheap though, about 16 bucks total. there was an aussie site selling the exact same switches for 30 bucks each lol

oh and i ended up finding them - brakequip sell them, BQ244. what threw me off was that they measure the outer diameter, which is 3/8". Instead of in the US where they measure by the inner diameter which was 3/16". But those 3/8" flare cones were perfect for the 3/16" lines and I was able to seal the leaky tube nut for good once i got it perfectly aligned.

Hence why I said most, not all, but they really do have a culture of scamming people dumb enough to fall for their tricks, those "aussie" switches only cost more because they have to be tested to make sure it's safe/legal to sell in our country, at least if they're a reputable company.

think ive worked out the xf issue. dipstick hasnt been blown out since i kinked it and i degreased the whole engine bay and theres no oil build up yet. done about 100km and its stayed in. found a coolant leak too, tiny pinhole at the underside of the upper rad hose under the hose clamp so i couldnt feel it when i was looking for leaks, and it drips onto the lower rad support and runs underneath. leaves nothing on the floor and nothing visible in the engine bay because the rad support is angled so its just been pooling in the 5mm gap under the radiator and the support.
only notices it cos i opened the bonnet after driving it today to see if the dipstick was still in and heard a very slight bubble noise. watched it for nearly 2 minutes before i saw a drip but its def leaking. cunt of a thing but atleast ive found it.
