I have a 1977 GAZ-24 Volga that I'm slowly stitching back together and trying to wrestle all the rusty spots back into order.
I also hav e a 1954 (I think) KMZ K750, a 1962 Izh Jupiter, a 1984 IMZ Ural and a 1987 Moto Guzzi California 3 in the shop.
I need to push a 2nd and 3rd car into the shop so I can work on them during the winter, a 1982 Škoda 120 Rapid and a 1984 Škoda 120L that I'm working on for my dad as his retirement car.
The 120L needs to be just the right amount of shitty so you don't get bored with it and end up wasting your retirement money on some piece of shit lexus or bmw crossover

Can't speak for newer stuff but 80s Audi is horrific. Yknow how you take out the engine? Remove the subframe and drop it out into an inspection pit with the gearbox attached. But thats nothing. The worst part of it is the fuel injection system. BOSCH invented continuous injection systems (CIS) to replace carburettors and were before ECU's took over. They are more efficient than carburettors but typically German in complexity. It's the one thing keeping me from driving it. THESE FUCKING THINGS NEED TO BE IN A STERILE LABORATORY TO BE REPAIRED IM NOT EVEN KIDDING.

Ja juu kyl hiukjan vituttaa ku ei teboilinm öljyjä saa kaupasta ja eipä niihinkää oikee mitää kunnon vastaavia korvaavia myöskään saanu samaan hintaan. 2 mahti öljyt esim on jotenki kaikki paskempia ku teboilin mineraalipohjanen oli.

Also also, ei uudet germaaniset ole oma juttu sillä jos ttotta puhutaan, sakemannet on vitun retardeja ja niitä ei pommitettu tarpeheksi että oppisivat olemahan.
Niiden V12 autot kuitenkin on kyllä aika peirun hienoja vehkeitä ja yllättävän kovatekoosiakin.

Very different. It’s electronic fuel injection with fuel injectors, an air flow meter, cold start valve (like an additional fuel injector), coolant temperature sender, idle air control valve, a very basic fuel injection computer (more like a waveform analyzer that varies the voltage to open and close injectors), throttle position sensor, and some even have an o2 sensor on the exhaust header (mine has an idle screw instead so I adjust it depending on the season). It’s actually simple and easy to understand AFTER I read the technical service bulletin on it…otherwise you won’t figure it out. I’m sure I’m forgetting a few things but that’s almost all of it.

Bosch L-Jetronic electronic fuel injection is what comes after K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection. I know they had even more complex mechanical FI before even these.

That sounds a lot more manageable. A lot of defence for the k-jet is "oeuh its all mechanical and can be fixed" but it is SO finely built, getting it to function properly is being on a razors edge. L-jet sounds like BOSCH admitted k-jet was too complicated and simplified things with electronics.

Anonymous No.28694056 [Report]

Yeah, it’s just an additional weird looking fuel injector that threads into the intake and sprays fuel into it when the engine is cold for a few seconds to counteract the more dense cold air which makes it run lean and not properly start.

Similar in concept to when you pull the choke on a carb to let less air in to ‘balance’ the air to fuel ratio so it’ll start and run until the engine is hot (then you release the choke) on cold days.

I actually don’t have any fuel hose going to my car’s cold start valve (due to replacing the heat soak prone thin steel fuel rail with a beefy aluminum replacement) and just push the gas pedal to the floor until it starts while cranking it. Bosch L-Jetronic makes the fuel injectors fire at maximum capacity when you do that and floods the combustion chambers with fuel kinda doing the same thing. It’s fun and I understand how this fuel injection system works.
Anonymous No.28694112 [Report] >>28694534
>>28693883
Bosch L-Jetronic is more manageable if you like simple electronics. It’ll look complex until you realize all the sensors really just send back a simple signal measured in ohms and that’s what the simple fuel injection computer (it really doesn’t compute anything and is more of a waveform analyzer with logic gates) reads and then it varies the electrical signals to the fuel injectors to open and close. And the fuel injectors fire at the same time as a ‘batch’ so you can swap the electrical cables on them because there’s no order. It’s simple but not efficient. Not efficient but extremely reliable. I like reliability so I leave it mostly stock and good quality parts are inexpensive.

Although, if you enjoy mechanical fuel systems then I’ve heard you can just add a better carburetor (maybe an Italian Weber or Japanese Mikuni), low fuel pressure electric fuel pump, and fuel filter while ditching the entire Bosch K-Jetronic system.

Your engine just wants fuel and air (also spark and compression but let’s assume you already have those) and doesn’t care how it gets them.

Theres so many stories of people swapping it out like that. The most bizarre one i read was a dude using a triumph bike carburettor, one for each cylinder on a 4 straight. I have no idea how that would fit in the engine bay let alone mount to the engine but some people go crazy finding alternatives to the kjet. Im probably going to resort to it aswell but first i need a freaking garage for this car.

L jet sounds fun to work on. And like you say, reliability over efficiency any day.
