should I cheap out on a Jack and stands or is it worth not going to a pawn shop and buying the least rusted one?
any good brand reqs or what to avoid?
I know harbor freight should have good ones right?
I just don't want the car to turn my skull to dust

If you're that cheap just get some scrap lumber from the side of the road and build some cribbing.

Project Farm failed to induce real failure in his tests of stands.
Which is in of itself encouraging.

harbor freight jacks and stands are perfectly fine, if you're extra paranoid you can get stands that are significantly higher rated than your use case. just be sure to use them at the appropriate spots on your car's frame.

HF jackstands are fine as everyone else has said.
Same for the jack itself, they’re literally all the exact same. Just get one while you’re at HF as well.

The Harbor Freight Daytona models are nice, although I'm using their "regular" 3 Ton and it lifts even fullsize SUVs just fine. IIRC it's the Daytona models that caused Snap-On to sue HF since it was so similar in design.
As far as stands, I like the ones with big pads for the feet and the stand itself. I like the Esco ones with a 3 ton capacity on each personally, not on both combined like most stands will say in the fine print.

This has been tested. Get this specific model of jack at Harbor Freight. It's a direct copy of a snapon model iirc and it works great.

I became a quick jack chad and won't go back until I become a two post chad

Most jack stand failures are from user error like people using them on slight inclines, gravel or unstable ground, changing the load distribution of the car while they're on the jack like removing an engine. Basically idiots shaking the car and tilting the stands over. I have one of the aluminum harbor freight Jack's it's probably 10 to 12 years old I use it to swap tires at the race park. I bought it when I was racing a light Civic but when I use it on the BMW I have now I can feel it's struggling.

Look for stands with the locking pins.

Also throw a wheel or tire under your car for extra safety, and keep your jack in place (just snug NOT lifting any weight off the stands).

I always use a jack, jakc stands and a piece of wood or tire under the car as 3rd backup

in my experience that one in particular isn't too bad but the casters are weak. it's true that most failures are from people using them on unstable or uneven asphalt and not giving them a smooth surface to roll on
black jacks from walmart have been a reliable option for me so far

never get under a car without a guaranteed way out. i use a combination of ramps and jack stands and hope
