Quite surreal that Australians bought millions of Opels without knowing about it

Europeons when they see something that resembles one of their precious shitboxes: OMG OPEL.
Don't you have a soccer game to get arrested for battery at?

No, GM completely abandoned RHD for anything that isn't ridiculously expensive/specialised.

Opel did have V8s though
The KAD Opels had 2 different Chevy small blocks, the top of the line had the Corvette C2 engine.

Commodores and Falcons are some of the most overrated shitboxes ever

Shit like SSs, XR6 turbos, FPVs etc are pretty cool but theres absolutely nothing special about the basic 6 cylinder na shitheaps. They're comfortable on shit roads and made in Australia and that's it.

Opel aside what the fuck was Cadillac thinking? It looked like a honda civic, and nothing like the grand prestige Caddies had at the time

They needed something from their euro portfolio to compete with 3series and C-classes. It was a holdover until the CTS. And the art and science styling language that came out a few years later.

I honestly think GM would've fared better at taking on BMW/Mercedes/Audi if they just started importing and marketing them as Opels in the early 80s. The yuppies who bought foreign would never buy a domestic car through snobbery, but they might've bought a car from a new German brand that undercuts all the opposition by $5,000, even one that looks like a Chevy Lumina
Anonymous No.28705771 [Report]

Ford tried importing Euro models with the Merkur brand with less than stellar results. GM just slapped "Euro" trim badges on garbage such as the aforementioned Lumina and earlier Celebrity and the like. Their foray into partnerships with Suzuki and Toyota brought about some of "GMs" best compacts like the Storm, Tracker and Metros though.

They didn’t (and still don’t) understand that market. Lower pricing for a better equipped product won’t win you any favour with yuppies. It’s why Apple did so well with them at that time and still does. It’s more expensive and not as well equipped, so they bought it in droves

Holden tried that several years back, for pretty much those exact reasons, it didn't work.

Go outside for once in your life, Holden's fucking dead as a dodo. All that's left is General Niggers Special Vehicles for the die hard sad cases

Last one of note was the Calibra and it really was not a good car at all, not quite Camira tier but it was only slightly above one burning Astra and very expensive
Anonymous No.28706666 [Report]
Ford did the same shit. falcons were the same as the US ones until the XD which was just a bigger Granada shell slapped onto the 60's falcon chassis
