Wariming up your car to check oil level is one of the dumest advices from the /o/ industry.

Real chads check their engine oil level, COLD, then drive off into the sunset. No waiting, no blown engine, no burning.

My car only allows the oil check when the engine is cold, I'm pretty sure.
Doesn't even have a dipstick.

Why does a low, barely above minimum engine oil level make me nervous? Is it innate?

It's a bad sign of things to come. Ideally your oil level should never drop that low if you change it during every service.

I've been in a pickle for 2 weeks anon,
I changed my oil 2 weeks ago, I poured about 4,5L into it (I dont really know, the 5L bottle stops its reading at about that level)
Later that day I checked oil level and its low, barely above the minimum.
I then poured an additional 0,5L Because I read online that the quantity between MIN and MAX level on the dipstick is 1L.
I checked oil level again yesterday and its still there at barely above minimum.
Manual says oil quantity is 5,1L
Yes Im sure there is no leak, I wiped the area around the oil plug and waited.
I have to get down under there again but first I have to buy more oil. But this will take time to arrive, I hope I dont blow the engine by then.

So either I'm supposed to pour in way more that 5,1L or something is wrong. But I dont think its an oil leak. Pouring 4,5L was on purpose because the dealer would always overfill it, to the point the car would tell me after every oil change by them that the level is too high.

Something's wrong here. Probably drained the diff and poured motor oil in the expansion tank.

The opposite for my Volvo, you can only see the oil level if the engine is off, and the manual suggests waiting after you've driven before checking it.

The Volvo T5 takes up most of it's ~5L oil capacity while it's running. If you checked the level at operating temp you'd put twice as much oil in the engine, and that tends to make them unhappy.

Anon stop being neurotic. Odds are good you could leave it alone until your next oil change at this point and be fine. If you want to buy a liter and chuck it in for peace of mind that would be fine too. Or half of it. Or check it twice a day if it makes you happy.

As long as your engine is turned off it doesn't make a goddamn bit of difference either way, hot or cold. That is if your engine is equipped with a dipstick, where you can actually see the level and color with your own eyes.

Dipsticks used to have cold and hot marks at the ideal fill range along with the low/high hatch marks.

You guys are all idiots, but that's a problem of society by design.

As long as it's within the hatchmarks, you're good to go, at any temperature. And as anyone who's checked a dipstick in hot and cold conditions knows, the difference is very slight compared to that safe range.

Think about that for a minute.
If it takes longer for the oil to drain back than it does to pump through the engine, the engine would oil starve itself after a couple of minutes of running and every engine would seize on the drive home from the dealership.

99.95% of the oil is back in the pan between shutting it off and popping the hood.
Otherwise you'd hit some x+1 formula where oil slowly accumulates in the top of the engine until theres nothing lwft in the pan and you'd have to shut it off after Y amount of minutes to let it drain back.

you've clearly never read a service manual you retard. pic related, Nissan VK56VD, 6.5 quarts for a oil filter and cahnge, 7.6 quarts for a overhaul. And this assumes the car was sitting around for a while for it all to drain back in to the pan for a oil change anyways.

Nah. You run the engine just long enough to loosen up the oil so it flows easier. It doesn't take that long and not enough to burn you.
