Benchracers here will disagree, but the Italians are the single-only nation on this planet to have imbued genuine soul into their cars. Their cars are imperfect but have character, unlike the sterile and autistic Germans. They have style and elegance, unlike the vulgar and rough Americans. They focus on on the exhilarating experience, unlike the bean-counting lifelessness of Japanese cars. Sure, they may not be reliable. They may not hit the top of the benchracing spec sheets. But stepping into a Lancia, an Alfa Romeo, a Ferrari, once can't hope to ignore the fact that the car was first most designed as a passion, and not simply a consumer product like any other. After all, aren't we all enthusiasts on this board, should we not seek the most sovlful car?

Theyre mostly unreliable shitboxes and for the most part, always have been but that is "character" I suppose.
Unfortunately in your ignorance of history, you are forgetting the true global champions of excellence in automotive character, the British motoring industry (RIP). But now that you've been properly informed, I'm sure you won't make such a mistake again.

They're a close second to the Italians. But the British still suffer from their social awkwardness and it reflected in their cars. Their most lauded cars are almost all Italian-designed, btw.

More like their car industry workers went full communist in the 70's with muh strikes and built shit quality cars whenever they actually bothered to work.

Don't forget they made it taller to get those stupid bumpers to Federal height.

Should have been an estate or at least have had a viariant; the QV of that would have outsold the RS6

In what way is this more elegant than a 33 Stradale, 250GT, Giulietta, 2600, or a Miura? Or a multitude of other examples I haven’t mentioned? Sure it’s not ugly, indeed in fact it’s a pretty car, but it still has that Americana vulgarity. It’s ostentatious. It’s out there. And thats fine, but it isn’t as elegant as an Italian car of its era.

I would rather lay under an Alfa Romeo Spider every morning to get it running, if it meant I didn’t have to drive some slopmobile like a Corolla. In fact I do exactly that in the summers with an Italian designed car, my MGB.

I own a giulia and disagree, Americans are the only automakers who can challenge the Italians for automotive soul. Mustang, neon srt, challenger, raptor, Corvette, the fucking Jeep, all soulful cars. It's because both Italy and America are passionate, emotional, expressive cultures. The Japs and Koreans are culturally disallowed to be passionate. The Germans are passionate but only for technical correctness, not expression. The French and Spanish would burn all their cars if they could. Only America and Italy think of a car and consider the noises it makes, whether someone wants to look back at it after they get out

alot of italian cars lost their soul when they started chasing the coke-wedge styling after stuff like the countach.
when they stopped doing wild curves and styling and just started making pencil eraser shapes I really wish people would've complained about it but their buyers ate that shit up and eventually their customer base became a cattle of fucking retards for them to cater to.

Most of the Italian brands are still in operation though… Only Lancia died and that’s because FIAT decided they weren’t as good of a halo brand as Alfa Romeo

Bullshit.
The real issue was the weak middle management in the car plants.
They so desperately wanted to be the emerging middle class they followed orders as if the Nuremburg Trials never fucking happened.
Heath's government had crippled the economy, workers were forced into a 3 day week, inflation was in an out of control spiral, escalating unemployment and huge economic retraction almost bankrupted The UK.

When Labour took power they inherited an utter fucking mess, as usual after the Tories fucked things up.

Under the Heath government there was one thing that resulted in our car industry getting fucked. He introduced the first public buy out of social housing.
These middle management cunts jumped on the mortgage band wagon.
What they didn't realise was if you don't pay your mortgage the bank rapes you
Being "managers" they couldn't unionise.
If the factory went on strike the union members got strike pay and local government rent rebates until the strike was over.
The managers got fuck all
So afraid of not paying the banks they were reduced to mere yes men and would implement policies direct from HQ with no regard for those on the shop floors.
So every time they shat themselves and issued new quotas etc the union members just walked off the shop floor.

Source? Both parents worked in Chrysler, Linwood, dad was a union shop steward for the spray painters

Miatas are just as soulful as Italian cars now. It only took 30 years of wear and tear for them to match Italian precision and craftsmanship.

Love my 33 and love my dad's Sprint, but man did Fiat butcher things for Alfa in the 2000's when they took over. FWD V6 leaves a horrible taste in my mouth.

At least they're alot better now with the Giulia
