How many are near you
Deflock.me

How many of these "for good use only" ALPRs are near you?

The hell is this? Yet another reason for me to avoid Jew York like the plague?

I live near Albany and pass about 6 of these on the way to work.

They are everywhere.
Even ordinary parking enforcement cars have them.

the issue is that every police cruiser has them mounted in all directions on them now. so just by driving around you're getting picked up. and I assume that if your car doesn't get a good plate read, that's enough for the cop to pull you over and see if you've got filters on your plate.

Looks like they're all stationed around businesses around my house.
Theft deterrence.

They're in every state and expanding rapidly. Faster than they can be regulated.

What's the point of these things. Aren't they just scanning for stolen cars.

They log your cars location, speed, your plate, and any identifying features (body style, color, scratches, bumper stickers, etc.) into a searchable database every time you pass one.

And they aren't particularly secure or reliable.

Just remember, gais, we are the free-est best-est country in the world! It's ok if we give up some of our freedoms for safety. Everything is for the best!

You have no right to privacy when in public. A man standing on the corner with a pen and a camera can do the exact same thing.

In all fairness, other countries are ahead of the curve on the speed camera/mass surveillance game. They're everywhere in Bongland, China's use face recognition. We're just playing catchup right now.

All you have to do is break them and inform the public that you never gave your consent to be tracked, never signed an NDA, never agreed to have your likeness used for profit (especially since you didn't get any), and that this is a violation of your rights. But you'll lose those rights soon, regardless. But for now, you can legally break them down.

These aren't all in public spaces, though. And you still need to give consent to being profited on.

I don't understand what you people's problem with these cameras is. They're only used to stop criminals and are very good at that, if you're not committing a crime you have nothing to worry about.

Except for all those times they gave false positives. Or those times when police officers used them to stalk people. Or when the local municipality doesn't know shit about security and and shithead can log in and access the database.

no you don't. That's why movies can film in public places and have random nobodies passing by in the background without needing to hunt down every single one and sign a contract with them. When you're in public, you inherently consent to other people noticing and remembering you.

Retard
Any legit TV/movie production closes off the entire block while they're filming, blurs all the faces of people that they couldn't get release statements from, or makes a gamble that nobody in the scene is kosher enough to sue

it depends on the scene. you can find scenes in movies where characters are walking around in the middle of Times Square in broad daylight, surrounded by thousands of people. do you think they shut down the busiest intersection in the world for half a day of filming and hired all those extras?
