A dumb jeet can do it but you can't? Is that even part of the CDL test?

It's just practice and not being afraid to get out and look if there's any question you might hit something. Illiterate turd worlders could and for the time being still do it before they get caught by ICE or DOT.

My test requires me to back a trailer in 90 degrees into a space with about 4-5 ft clearance on each side, pull out, and then reverse it into a parallel spot within only about 2 trucklengths worth of space to move around in. My first and second attempts took embarassingly long.

I'm not shitting you when I say that I found getting my pilots license and flying a plane easier than driving a truck. I wish my school would taught me to use the double clutch method, I don't like floating gears at all.

Take it slow and GOAL. Pull up as much as you need, or allowed to in the test. I botched my offset test a couple times too. Just keep at it.

Just takes practice. You're probably bending the truck too much and then aren't able to get back in front of the trailer in time. All newbs do that and it makes everything about backing harder than it has to be. When I started, the space allowed seemed tiny so I put in a lot of steering to try and get where I thought I needed to be and frequently had the tractor at 90 degrees to the trailer and then couldn't get back in front of it to push back. Now, that amount of space seems as big as all of Texas so I don't feel the need to crank in a lot of steering.

You assume they actually could. More likely they didn't actually pass anything legitimately.

Don't focus so much on where the rear end of the trailer is going, focus on where your tandem axles are going and mentally track where they will be. The straighter you are relative to your trailer, the more control you have over it. After you do it several hundred times you will be able to feel it.

And always remember, its all about your set up. Learn how to position the truck to prepare to back up.

if you take a step backwards, do you call yourself reversing?

Practice makes progress.
Rent a U-haul and go to an empty parking lot with some cones.

Turn the direction your trailer is moving in your side mirrors, going right turn right easy.

It's just opposite of how regular trailers work.
