"cheaper" ha... hahahha. Yeah they're not expensive to acquire but for one they're old so everything breaks naturally of age, and the other is that the well known Mazda rust problems will kick you. Way before the engine will. Don't get fooled by the low cost of purchase, running it is the expensive part. I haven't driven one myself but rumour has it an NC Miata handles the same, so I would go for one of those for a cheap car with the same qualities.
Now that the bad is out of the way, I fucking love this car and I'll keep it until it explodes (and probably then put a new engine in it). It's comfortable, it's responsive, it's fun. It's not fast in a straight line and gets mogged by everything but I just don't care it's a great little sports car. And yes, the rear seats are useable and yes, the trunk is actually useable as well.
