I use a waterproof salomon cap with a columbia ear-warmer in winter. If I need more warmth, my mid layer has a hood.

In summer I use an all-mesh cap designed for runners (Vaga hats) or a Dekine surf-hat if I really need to keep the sun off. The surf-hat is great. Light, packable, breathable, adjustable incase its windy, it floats and the brim is decently wide. It's kinda like a boonie but way better.

When you call up a memory you're transported instantly between now and then without having to pass through all of the memories that happened between now and the moment you're recalling. And so you mistakenly think "time sure is flying".

the back gets a bit hot but this beats the issue with full brim hats, which is sitting in a car and having the back hit the chair.
I use picrel
>>2801520
my issues with boonies is the brim length is always shorter in length then a brimmed hat. Need 3" minimum, but preferably 3.5"
I find Tilley makes hats for this, sunday afternoon, rei hat as picrel, and outdoor research. the OR sombrero's fit the bill and have a waterproof version too.
I have to use hats for work every day as a lookout, and being high up in elevation makes the need to block the sun even stronger as work can go from sun up to sun down.
Boonies overall are too short in length, and work as a one size fits all, master of none option.
During winter, I like the wool ski caps used in Europe. It's a wool field cap. Most caps make my head itch and these don't. I can just wear a wool beanie over the cap too for colder days. Stormy Kromer caps, though they cover your ears, just have too short of a brim length, again.

seems like wool is the deciding factor in a boonie vs. bucket hat. i'll probably go with a wool bucket hat since i prefer the feel and carry a sunscreen stick for hassle-free reapplication. thanks, i actually need a good hat as well as head bugnet, minor pack mods, body sling/fanny pack, and food dehydrator to really nail down my setup

To anyone who said boonie hat, fuck you and your hat.
Sure, it does look like it would work great, that's why I wanted to buy one for years, but meh, I had plenty of baseball caps.
Until recently I decided to order one. And used it.
Fucking hell, it muffles the sound of everything around you, I could be being stalked by a bear riding a T-Rex and I would only notice when I look back.
Shade is pretty good, it also handles sweat pretty well. But it muffles some sounds and makes other sounds reverb.
Well, I guess wide brim hats are not for me.

My wife calls this my virgin hat. I can take the neck shade thing off to make it less nerdy and the bill of the cap has a flit in it so you can fold it flat and put it in your pocket.

in high humidity those styles drape onto the fact and are super fucking annoying.

great for sun though, but the reason for the small boon rim is so it sleeks rain off.
in countries like vietnam with 70-80% humidity near daily, it's very important.

It's a purely military thing. Whenever shouldering the rifle, the wide brim hat could get hit by said rifle so the soldiers started pinning it on the side to prevent that which would become standard practice.
